I don't know where you've heard that from, but T-38 PIT is exactly the opposite of one big haze.
Admittedly I haven't been personally, I just know what a few others have reported upon return.
In my experience, it is the most laid back, fun formal military flying training program I've seen.
That can't be as the most laid back, fun, formal military flying training program is at Beale.
Regardless, with about equal time now in the 38 and 45, given the choice I personally would prefer to fly the 45. And in 45s you get to drop blue death, probably the most enjoyable part of the syllabus as I recall - even with iron sights. I can only imagine the fun factor increases when you're not worried about getting a down. Going back to the boat would be a kick too.
