t-38 instructor tour

Gator, I have been trying to suppress memories of HSL-40. I should have phrased that better, but I didn't hear the phrase "IP" thrown around post TRACOM like the VP guys do. Not really sure if it's applicable in the othe FW communities or not (killing alligators closest to the canoe at the moment)

The 560th FTS (T-38) at Randolph AFB used to have a Navy pilot in their squadron when I was in it. I haven't heard of one there in a while, but maybe the program still exists, although dormant.
For the 560th Commanders office, try DSN 487-3412.

About done with first Hornet tour and looking for something different than the standard IP tours.

It's always good to look for variety in your career but consider this...Naval Aviation could use you as an instructor pilot. Either FRS or VT it's part of our heritage to return and teach where once a student.

I'm on my second IP tour and they have been throughougly enjoyable. First time at 106 and now in Kingsville--of course my current position makes me a little bias towards enticing you to be an VT IP.

Think about it...I'm sure we could find a place for you in Kingsville. 7-10 flights a week, 300+ hours a year.

Just for the reason why you should care about the 560th: They are in charge of most of the T-38 instructor training for the USAF. If you want to be a T-38 SUPT instructor, that's where you will train.

If you have the urge to do something different than the standard path, then go for it dude. There are so many bitter guys that "got all the checks in the boxes" who still got passed over. It's not worth it to put your desires aside just so that you can make a bunch of guys on a pannel happy.

I feel you if you are burned out after your VFA JO tour. I am freeging exhausted. I too am thinking of doing something non standard for my shore tour. Good luck.

I agree here. You have to do what you want. Just know that it's possible that it could cost you down the road...maybe but if it's what will make you happy, go for it. I've seen the same above and I've seen guys who make it to the O-5 level but hate their jobs. I didn't make O-5, kept flying (except this one year tour) and I'm happy as can be.

If an IP gig is what you're up for go for it - but between the 45 and the 38 I'd say 45 hands down. That and from what I hear PIT is just one big haze-X so caveat emptor.

Got one ride in the 38 up in Columbus while instructing in the Goshawk... not in the least bit impressed, it goes real fast in a straight line, buffets at 3g at 400 knots (or something close to that) and looks like the T-2 on the inside (besides some recockulously huge color MFD thingy they tried to slap in there). I submit that going on a tracom tour outside navy channels in the tactical realm would be interesting on one hand, but likened to chopping your crank off for either follow on orders or any career aspirations. If one doesn't like the BS the pointy nosed hook going fleet deals out, then the tracom is a great place to recharge, fly your ass off, and also shine if you want to. NO 2 hour briefs for .9 logged to 3 hour SFWT assmunch debrief. 5 minute conduct brief for a 1.1 SOLO logged to a 10 minute admin debrief on ACM leads (more if you want to help out the stud with pointers from lead perspective). 2100 hours in 4.5 years there, all while LSOing and drinking my face off. Good life.

Don't do it purely for flight time to get into the airlines. Finish up your retirement you will thank me in the end. I currently fly for Delta and its great and all but I'm going back in the military to collect retirement. Besides by the end of 2012 when the mandatory retirement age hits they will be hurting for pilots and flight time won't matter. Get your retirement!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't know where you've heard that from, but T-38 PIT is exactly the opposite of one big haze.

In my experience, it is the most laid back, fun formal military flying training program I've seen.
