Departing American technicians  I believe that was quite a while ago and the Iranian F-14 force decimated the Iraqi AF from 1980-88. Something like 130-150 kills were creditied to them. There might only be a handful flying now but I don't think it was due to American techs.
Yeah, what Bunk said. I'm not suggesting the Iranians comprise an omnipotent force, but they're also not likely to take the bulk of their fleet and run to Iraq. They're going to go down fighting and are arguably more sophisticated than the Iraqis were.

Departing american technicians disabled many of the Iranian F-14s key avionics components and recent satellite imagery shows that they are in continued states of disrepair and immobility. As far as new SAMs yeah, that sounds like a pretty decent threat but thats where you come in, right? :)

I didn't know that you could get you hands on the latest satellite imagery, impressive for a PLC type.........:D

Like Bunk pointed out, the Iranians have done a remarkable job of keeping a good number of the 79 they had when the Shah fell 27 years ago!! While their kill claims were probably greatly inflated inthe Iran-Iraq war they were no slouches compared to the Iraqis. And a minor point, the technicians did not disable the F-14's themselves but the AIM-54 Phoenix missles we deliverd to arm them. They fixed some of them though, and claimed to have added a few extras Iran claims to have fitted F-14s with I-Hawk missiles adapted to the air-to-air role http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/world/iran/airforce.htm .

And while us Prowler bubbas, with some assist from our USAF brethren, have done a fine job at defeating enemy air defense systems the US has yet to face double-digit SAM's in combat (with the exception of MANPAD's). Think about that........

I read the satellite imagery info in an article a while back, outdated nonetheless so I guess I stand corrected. I heard similar claims that the F-14avionics were screwed with on a documentary. Like a said, thats not solid, so there you have it. If the Iranians do have a competent force, and even if they do go fighting, they're no match for our pilots and i'm not worried about that. I'd be more worried about a new SAM threat or something of that nature. Regardless the conversation kinda drifted from UCAVs.. I appreciate the comments... Flash, bud, thats a Marine type not a PLC type :)

Well, I thought about it.

And while I agree with the rest of your post on the Iranian F-14's and AIM-54's --- if I correctly understand what you are saying:

... you should check the Hanoi/Haiphong corridor, Linebacker II, December, 1972. You want SAMs?? Double digits all over the place .... until they ran out. The first night, the Gomers launched 129+ SAMs .... bad day.

He means double digit as in SA-9 vs. SA-10 (FOR EXAMPLE). Not 50 SA-1's (FOR EXAMPLE).

Well, I don't know what he meant ... but thanks for the clarification ... seriously. You do mean SA-2 Guidline (NATO-speak for the Soviet S-75) viz SA-1's. The SA-1 Guide is a 50's missile. Yes??? For example ??? :) :icon_rast

No, I meant FOR EXAMPLE, as in I am very rusty on current SA's let alone SA history, so I randomly chose some numbers to provide an example of what Flash meant. (i.e. SA-9 is a single digit SAM, whereas SA-10 is a double digit SAM.)

Got it. I'm sorry, Flash & HH-60H driver. I thought Flash meant shots --- shoots --- a.k.a. missiles in the air at one time.

God, I'm getting O-L-D .......

Oh, boy !!! BOY !!! BOY !!! More whiskey for my latte. Chop chop, now boy !!!

Never mind the 10/11/15, that's old hat. I worry about the 20 (at least at this classification level) ;)

Sorry about the confusion, I meant exactly what HH-60 said about double-digit SAM's, ie: SA-10/15/20 and not the wall of SAM's that you had to face over North Vietnam.

All of the double-digit SAM's give me worry but Brett was right about the SA-20 and above, they are downright scary. Our enemies have seen what we hath wrought on the Iraqis and Serbs and have kept improving their defense systems. Many defenses are no longer geared to just defend their country but to defend their country from US arms, technology and tactics.

Sounds like incentive for you Prowler boys to keep your SEAD skills sharp!!

The EA-18 Shocker will help :D .

As will ICAP III. I hear a rumor that there's a push to fund more of those because they're working out so nicely. Any skinny on that from DC, Flash?
