FY 18 IWC DCO BOARD

Hail_HYDRA!

One more question...
I had a feeling the board would not turn someone away if they had a Master or Phd that minimum GPA requirements.
I didn't get picked up this year and I just have a Doctorate in Engineering with a of GPA 3.84. There are many other factors than GPA alone and type of degree. I see a few priors get picked up, and that's a good thing. In my case, I only put in for CW. Congrats to everyone who got selected! Will be dropping my packet for the next board. I will get in. In the meantime, will continue to seek more leadership opportunities and professional development.

WOW! That's impressive. What major were your BS/MS/PhD in? What's your profession? Do you work as a GS / defense contractor? Have you considered EDO?

You guys and gals are impressive! The depth and experience of the folks on this site is amazing. I'm just trting to keep up!
Let me answer your questions.

EDUCATION

  • B.S. - Networks and Telecommunications Mgmt. (3.09)
  • MBA in Information Security (3.66)
  • M.S. in Predictive Analytics (Data Science) - 3.33
  • Doctor of Engineering (D.Eng) in Engineering Mgmt. (3.84)
SUMMARIZED WORK EXPERIENCE
  • Oil & Gas Industry (including offshore time on oil rigs which is hella fun)
    • Network Engineer
    • Telecom Engineer
    • Lean Six Sigma Black Belt Facilitator
    • IT Auditor
    • Information Assurance Risk Manager
    • Data Scientist
  • Cyber Fraud Advanced Analytics Investigator (GS-14)
  • National Quality & Continuous Improvement Program Manager (GS-14)
HAVE I CONSIDERED EDO?
Yes, however due to my undergrad degree having "Management" in its name (e.g., Networks and Telecommunications Management) that is a no-go. Furthermore, the PA for EDO especially calls out these sorts of degrees to include Engineering Management and Engineering Technology degrees (e.g., Electrical Engineering is ok, but Electrical Technology is a no-go). HOWEVER, depending on your work experiences and such the Program Manager can make exceptions. Given how competitive things are, I'm not seeking that route (getting an exception of some sort when there's plenty of people who don't need one). SO, I discovered that Arizona State University has an online ABET-Approved Electrical Engineering program. I sent my transcripts over like two years ago as the "Management" in my undergraduate degree was holding me back on the private sector sides of things. I volunteered to go to Puerto Rico to assist with the mission there (I'm a USACE employee). When I get back I will start the online electrical engineering program at ASU. I only have roughly 12-18 months worth of classes as most of classes transferred over, hence, the management in engineering degrees. ;)

The first time I didn't get picked up I was like -->. This time -- with a little :D when my status was PRO-BOARD but also  as for the people who got picked up, they were legit from what I can read on this board. Given the stats, a lot of us were not going to make it no matter what as you just can't squeeze 100 people into seven slots. Like I said before in this thread, I'll be busy improving myself to have an even more competitive packet next go around. I'll be DAWIA Level III in Systems Engineering (SPDRE-SE) this year and Level III in Production, Quality, and Manufacuring (PQM) and Information Technology (IT) next year. I also got submitted for ASQ's Emerging Quality Leaders program (12 month development program) by my manager. My packet for EDO will be worth looking into then. Army teases me for foing Navy, but its all in fun. Navy in a wierd way is making me better as a leader and a professional as by doing all this extra stuff to get picked up is only making me a better professional in my civilian life.

In the meantime, I'll continue lurking on this website along with information warriors, station hypo, and whatever else I can add to the list. You guys haven't seen the last me.

Career Recruiter
To all who were selected, congratulations! Never forget your roots as you go forward in your career. Continue to help those striving to achieve what you have accomplished because as awesome as you all are, you didn't get there on your own. Pay it forward.

To all those that didn't get selected. I recommend enhancing next years application by proving to the board that your patriotism and commitment to serve is not skin deep. That you are both humble and a servant leader. You can do this by contacting your local ENLISTED Navy Recruiter.

*** https://www.navy.com/locator.html ***

I HIGHLY recommend going Active Duty but while Reserves will do the trick it will take you A LOT longer to gain the necessary experience. Ask for the New Accession for Training (NAT) Program if you want to stay Reserves. If you feel that you are above going Enlisted because you have a degree then that is part of the reason your chances at selection have been exponentially diminished.

Should you go Enlisted, the best Jobs to take for the IWC Commissioning path are Intel Specialist (IS), Crypto-Tech (CT), Information Tech (IT) or Electronics Tech (ET). Every one of my 7 Selects have been Prior Service HUM/INT or some branch of INFO SEC community. ONLY one civilian out of over 30 IWC applicants I've ever had got selected without Prior (military) Service experience. He is a senior level GS who has been doing the same job on the civilian side for 14 years, making a difference in places you hear about in the news everyday.

If you are in the INFO SEC community and did not get selected then keep trying. Compare notes with those that were selected and do your best to accomplish what they did. Put it on your Resume and then offer documented proof. If there is no certificate or Eval then it didn't happen and you will not get credit at the board. Persistence is key. Don't be surprised if it's your 3rd+ attempt before you get selected, never stop improving. Good luck.

Just curious if anyone else is still awaiting Intel results from their OR? I have received timeframe updates and other communication, but no word to date on whether I was actually picked up.
I'm still waiting. Recruiter is in Northeast out of NY. I'm in Boston. Talked with him yesterday. He knew that people were hearing because he got calls from people reading this blog or others like it, but he hadn't received the results yet. He tried reaching out. It can take some time to filter down and people go on vacation ect... Being patient is tough when you know the decision is made and the answer is there. Hang in there and good luck!

I'm still waiting as well here in the Southeast. OR and I are out of Columbia, Reserve Intel Center is in Atlanta, and the NRD is in Raleigh. Getting really antsy, but it is what it is, just have to be patient. OR has already reached out and said the results still haven't been sent to her. Good luck to all and congrats to those who've already been selected.

I live in Charlotte N.C. (NRD Raleigh). I received the same feedback from my OR. The results have not been sent to him. Hope we get our results soon.

Congrats to those selected!

One of my selections last year had a 2.73 undergrad gpa. His masters was above a 3.4 in cyber security. I’m happy to post the rest of his stats if anyone cares.
What designator did he get selected into? I am still trying to figure out if my undergraduate GPA will keep me ineligible once I finish my masters with a more than qualifying GPA

As a Recruiter I'm 4-8 on this board. Those that were not selected were incredibly qualified and I'm in fact surprised they did not make it! My recommendation is for those that want the job you NEED prior service experience as Enlisted or as a GS/Contractor or BOTH! Foreign languages a plus, not required. Certificates absolutely! Masters preferred not required. Will post the details tomorrow.

What NRD are you with. Looking for results from Pensacola. Hadn’t heard from the recruiter here yet.
