I don't think anybody's position is really that we should dismiss the possibility of Chinese research involvement in this, the point is there are some suspicious indicators but no really solid proof that would change our behavior one way or the other.

We should be taking measures to ensure we are more resilient to a pandemic in the future regardless of "whodunit." If that involves keeping critical manufacturing to a minimum level here, do it. If it involves requiring other nations partake in a common standard of medical transparency and cooperation to engage in global travel and trade with us, do it. There's no need to prove China was or wasn't definitely responsible to do any of those things.

Before everybody freaks out with "Communists," that well known bastion of socialism and repression called Australia is doing the same. Except instead of apps, they're using QR code check ins.
Was the line about Australia supposed to be in jest?

I'm just hopeful that once all have been able to that wanted it(in their respective squadron/base location), they will reduce the masking rules (for all; in squadron spaces) and out in town rules (at a minimum for those that took it; ideally for all though). Not beyond whatever the local government has set obviously, but at least ditch the FRAGORD. If you took the vaccine, or chose not to, it's time to get back somewhat to normal (I'm not saying to ignore local mask edicts in town if they exist, or to choose to take a trip (although the mil should have nothing to say on this choice barring operational necessity to decline your leave) to infect a high-risk grandma that isn't vaccinated, etc). Everyone (in their respective military location) will have had the ability to grab a vaccine if they wanted it, or decline it if they wanted to wait for more data or until it becomes mandatory. So we can start treating all of these people, like, ya know, the adults they are.
I think that if there was a plan to do this, it would have been communicated already to spur more interest in getting the vaccine.

I probably wouldn’t have opted for the vaccine either way but if it exempted me from masks, quarantines, restrictions, etc, I would have considered it more. I get that the public messaging is that we must keep it up even after being vaccinated but that’s likely another noble lie because it would be impractical to track who really got vaccinated. In the military, that’s not the case and it’s idiotic to make policy decisions based on theoretical possibilities.

A little light weekend reading if anyone is interested; this is the peer-reviewed study put out by Stanford about whether or not COVID-19 lockdowns around the world were effective. Anyone care to hazard a guess as to what the conclusions were...?

P.S. bonus points to the first person who says “but lockdowns weren’t about stopping the spread, they were about flattening the curve!” Yep, over 300 days later, and here were we are. Still flattening that curve.

From the article

Implementing any NPIs was associated with significant reductions in case growth in 9 out of 10 study countries, including South Korea and Sweden that implemented only lrNPI

Glad to see you finally agree that masks work.

Masks work super well. If anyone disagrees about the efficacy of masks, I just tell them to look at how successful California has been. They’ve been wearing them, and locking down, longer than anyone.

Bonus points: how many college football players did scientists say were “guaranteed” to die if the season was played, and how many actually did?

Just quoting the paper you cited as the burning bush of truth.

We've been operating at our workplace throughout the pandemic, using masks, ventilation, and distancing, and have had zero spread within the workplace. NPI works.

I’m not sure where I compared it to the burning bush.

That’s fantastic that your workplace hasn’t had issues. Have y’all gotten tested on a regular basis? Are you just assuming there hasn’t been any asymptomatic spread? Also, have you been in touch with any colleagues out in California? What are they doing so wrong to have so much spread?

I’ve been living normally, had a 100 person wedding with no masks, and a NYE party. I had my lucky rock nearby and no one got sick. My lucky rock works!

Unpopular opinion: If you care about trying to find out who joined the Capitol riot and making sure any wrongdoers get caught, you should also care about trying to find out who and how the SARS-COV2 virus originated and making sure any wrongdoers get caught.

Any of them covid positive? We've had covid positive people at work (find out after the fact) while located in student super spreader central, and yet no transmission at work.

How do you guys think it is transmitted anyway? 5G networks? Sidelong glances? Fluoride in the drinking water?

We have had randomized testing throughout, and testing for all travel (both sides, out and back) and then testing for return to work after the break. I've had three tests.
