The use technology/don't use technology debate has a lot of valid arguments both ways, it's not all about old people who had to walk uphill in the snow so the young generation should have to as well.

There's a time and place for it but a lot of people have the illusion of situational awareness from steering a little airplane on the screen of an iPad. If it's your solo check and you're blasting out of the OLF going a mile every 15 or 20 seconds and you don't grasp that the first course rules checkpoint is at your eleven o'clock and ten miles because you have to fiddle-f__ the avionics with your head down, then that's a problem, sorta like getting to the end of your street and not knowing whether to turn left or right to drive to work. If you never got past mediocrity in your TACAN point-to-point because you were allowed to use all the instrument navigation bells and whistles from day one, then flying around the boat might not be for you (among other things). On the other hand, if you're deployed in a complex environment with airspace management, threats, friendlies, neutral countries, terrain, weather... and you're relying on the "use the force, Luke, turn the computer off" because using modern technology was entirely forbidden in flight school, well, that's a different kind of problem and it's just as bad.

So yeah, there's curmudgeon-ness to it but it's not always because my pain = your pain for pain's sake or some misguided rite of initiation.
 
Never been to Navy pilot training but no pilot (or NFO) should fly with a moving map and any type of RNAV until they have learned to fly without it. Master the basics of navigation, instruments fly and scan before you add the toys. Some day you'll need those skills and so will the people in your aircraft depending on you.
 
Anyone know how close we are to when DOD/NGA stops making paper pubs? I imagine at some point hands will be forced when that happens. Just like how all the old dogs loved torturing people with NDBs and failed cards but NDBs are basically all gone and there's no such thing as a failed card anymore.
 
The biggest issues with the iPad in the cockpit for me are the bulk, even the smaller iPads, and that the screen is never bright enough during the day. At full blast it’s still too dim and burning battery.

The fact that we are still having 50 boxes of DOD charts delivered every update has to give at some point, but the iPad wasn’t as convenient as I expected. I never renewed my ForeFlight subscription.

According to our squadron’s pubs-o, iPads are going to be issued to each pilot in the near future, to replace our current EFBs, which are allowed in classified spaces and apparently so will the ipads. Granted that plan could change, but it doesn’t look like it.

I've been hearing this for five years.
 
The fingerprint to turn it on (instead of using your pin code) and the virtual off button on the touchscreen both go a long way to preserving tablet battery life.

The fingerprint sensor is probably not gonna happen on the classified iPads though (if or when those become a thing).
 
HT-18 had a stack of like 15 EKBs for people to check out. Not a single student used one while I was there, from what I saw
