I just took version 5 a few weeks ago and didn't like it all that much either. If I'm understanding you correctly, once you take a version you don't have to worry about taking the same one again? So if I retake, I'm guaranteed version 3 or 4 (I think 1 and 2 are retired, yes?)?

ASTB taken, now holding breath...
finally took the astb today. version 3. hoping to get some decent grades back in a weeks time. the wait is gonna kill me though. anyways, here are some highlights:
-the math section was a little different than i expected. time was the biggest factor by far. gotta move real quick in this section. couple questions i got hung up on included the type that says "if it takes x people a certain amount of time to complete a task, how long will it take if y people are added to the job every hour?" there may be some others i cant remember right now.
-mechanical was probably the toughest for me. a few threw me off. plenty of pulley questions that involve how much rope needs to be pulled to raise a weight. another was taking current and resistance and determining voltage, wasn't too prepared for that. there was another about how much a raft is pushed if a fat bastard jumps off of it, try and know that.
-spatial and verbal are straightforward. study the gouge and youre set.
-aviation and nautical was interesting. know not only boater right of way, but aircraft right of way. know the parts of a ship, transponder codes, and aircraft control surfaces.
-my supp portion was more verbal, so same story there.
i studied using everything i could scrape off here, and the arco book. take practice exams to get your timing down right. math can be a bit tough to study for if youre rusty on the subject, but practice as many question types as you can. aviation and nautical is a cram fest of knowledge, alot of which you should ideally know if you already had an interest in aviation. wikipedia is a good quick reference source, as is the rest of the internet. anyways, thought i would contribute my small piece back to the site, cause i for sure would have been lost without it. good luck all.

what percent of RL officers get jets?
I took the same test last friday and got an 8/7/8 67. Did you not take the computer test? it gave the scores instantly. I was a bit disappointed with my pilot score, but my recruiter seemed happy with it so if he's happy, then i'm happy. A former NFO at the recruiting office said that 67 was the highest she's seen. but who cares, i wanted a 9 on my pilot portion, oh well.
the question about adding a person every hour was crazy, completely guessed that one, but an "educated guess"
it was something like, if x number of people takes 10 hours to finish Y amount of work, what time will they finish if they start at 10 am and add one person every hour after 12pm. or something like that.
There's a question that asks something like... "whats the name of a full capacity nuclear ship..." can't remember the exact question but the choices were CVG, CGG, ___, ___. I guessed CVG but i'm sure most of you know the answers to that... i knew nothing about aviation, nautical, navy history, physics, etc before i started studying for ASTB so I didnt get to cover everything before the test. Why the heck did I study Economics in college. oh well, atleast it pays my bills while i'm waiting to hear back.

i had the paper exam. uhhhhh, the suspense is driving me mad. your score rocks btw, nice work.
the carrier designation is cvn i believe.
ugh, the more i think about it, the more questions i'm not too sure about.

I was driving down I-5 from berkeley at 2am after going up there to pick up some recommendation letters and transcripts. Good observation.
Agreed. It took almost a month the first time and about a month and a half to get my results back the second time. At least my score improved. Now if only my packet would reach the boards already.....

For you Southern Cali people, just goto the MEPS in LA to take the ASTB and save yourself the misery of waiting. As soon as I clicked the "Next" button after the last question, it spat out the scores. If i had known that the scores were gonna pop up like that, I would've closed my eyes and peaked at the scores one by one just for the suspense of it =) but the instant scores killed the fun for me, I didnt even have time to blink.

The Math and verbal part is definitely easier than the SAT since it's only reading comprehension. I remember I hated all analogies and definition/synonym sections of the SAT VERBAL.
Mechanical, Spatial, Aviation and nautical sections were completely new to me so I deifnitely had to do some studying for that. I don't play much video games but I've played "Ace Combat" on PS2 before and I thought it helped with the spatial section of the test =)

Hey folks I am in need of some help for my brother and according to all of you that has written on this post I think you can help my brother! He has taken the ASTB twice already and is having to take it again for the third and final time! I don't know his scores off hand but I think his previous time he took it he had a 7/6/6/ 44. I am done and am going into the marine aviation program. I have done everything I can to help my brother and I am not sure what else to do to help him. He has taken versions 4 and 5 of the test and his next version will be 3 if I am not mistaken. He says his biggest problems are the mechanical and verbal comprehension parts of the test. Please if anyone of you can help out Corey, please let me know anything can help!
