Ask an OR anything

I am graduated at 3.40 GPA (business), 26M, no prior service, highly motivated to be SWO. What is the best MATERIAL to study to ensure i get a good score on the OAR? Thank you

Not a recruiter, but the Gomez and Kyle drives are what I used to study for my ASTB (which includes the OAR). Plenty of good material on there for math and physics/mechanical stuff. Here's the links for the Gomez Drive and Kyle Drive. Best of luck!

I've got some curiosities.

What percentage of initial contacts actually follow through with selection and go to OCS?
What is the current status of the "recruiting crisis"?
As an officer recruiter, what do you see as the biggest hurdle to getting people in the door at Newport?

I’ll let @zoeth and possibly @exNavyOffRec answer first. I do have some inputs but I don’t want to hijack Mr. Z’s own thread.

Hate to cop out and provide broad info, but the ASTB subsection of this forum has a ton of information, particularly the “1000+ questions” about it. Start by opening/reading the most recent posts and then scroll up.

Each person’s study habits are different and some might work better than others. However, I think you’ll find material that best suits yours and to set yourself up for success.

“By the book” recruiters can’t provide actual ASTB study tips and such (recruiters have gotten in trouble with this), however we can * wink * and suggest applicants check out airwarriors.

Lol glad to hear that. There would be some severe personality mismatch if that did end up happening somehow.

Actually, I lied. There is an O-3 IP in recruiting, but they’re the N6/IT person at recruiting command headquarters. Not actually in the field recruiting.

So… I’m saying there’s a chance if you really want to go… albeit to navy recruiting command in millington Tennessee.

What is your definition of initial contact? That could be just a quick discussion at a career fair when someone just ask simple questions or it could be sitting down with a person and going over what designators are available depending on your definition of "initial contact". If you go with the career fair example I would also go with 10-20%, if we are talking about sitting down in front of me it was from that point it was about 80% or so that went forward with applications and I only had a few that after selection didn't go to OCS.

Now each area is different so my experiences and @zoeth experiences will be different. I rarely had had anyone fail the OAR or ASTB, I did see one score that was 1/1/1, I think I can count on 1 hand how many had scores less that 5/5, most we tested ended up with 7's and 8's. I was at the HQ where we tested the majority of people which allowed me to see pretty much all of the scores. I would also generally end up debriefing the applicants after their test even if they weren't mine.
