I am graduated at 3.40 GPA (business), 26M, no prior service, highly motivated to be SWO. What is the best MATERIAL to study to ensure i get a good score on the OAR? Thank you

Not a recruiter, but the Gomez and Kyle drives are what I used to study for my ASTB (which includes the OAR). Plenty of good material on there for math and physics/mechanical stuff. Here's the links for the Gomez Drive and Kyle Drive. Best of luck!

I've got some curiosities.

What percentage of initial contacts actually follow through with selection and go to OCS?
What is the current status of the "recruiting crisis"?
As an officer recruiter, what do you see as the biggest hurdle to getting people in the door at Newport?

I’ll let @zoeth and possibly @exNavyOffRec answer first. I do have some inputs but I don’t want to hijack Mr. Z’s own thread.

Hate to cop out and provide broad info, but the ASTB subsection of this forum has a ton of information, particularly the “1000+ questions” about it. Start by opening/reading the most recent posts and then scroll up.

Each person’s study habits are different and some might work better than others. However, I think you’ll find material that best suits yours and to set yourself up for success.

“By the book” recruiters can’t provide actual ASTB study tips and such (recruiters have gotten in trouble with this), however we can * wink * and suggest applicants check out airwarriors.

Lol glad to hear that. There would be some severe personality mismatch if that did end up happening somehow.

Actually, I lied. There is an O-3 IP in recruiting, but they’re the N6/IT person at recruiting command headquarters. Not actually in the field recruiting.

So… I’m saying there’s a chance if you really want to go… albeit to navy recruiting command in millington Tennessee.

What is your definition of initial contact? That could be just a quick discussion at a career fair when someone just ask simple questions or it could be sitting down with a person and going over what designators are available depending on your definition of "initial contact". If you go with the career fair example I would also go with 10-20%, if we are talking about sitting down in front of me it was from that point it was about 80% or so that went forward with applications and I only had a few that after selection didn't go to OCS.

Now each area is different so my experiences and @zoeth experiences will be different. I rarely had had anyone fail the OAR or ASTB, I did see one score that was 1/1/1, I think I can count on 1 hand how many had scores less that 5/5, most we tested ended up with 7's and 8's. I was at the HQ where we tested the majority of people which allowed me to see pretty much all of the scores. I would also generally end up debriefing the applicants after their test even if they weren't mine.

@zoeth has NRC indicated or said how many of the spots are being filled by ISEL or URL ISPP? Prior to those programs coming online the changes were fairly minor compared to now.
Apparently, ISEL and Unrestricted ISPP don't count against quotas?
I find that that's honestly BS.
It's just like getting MAP'd or CAP'd or whatever they are calling it these days. It absolutely does affect promotion and locks rates up.
Just ask any ABH, HM, DC, MA how they feel about it, haha.
We all know OCS mostly just fills the holes left after ROTC and Academy graduates.
But when I start hearing larger designators like SWO/Pilot/Supply begin to close, it's a head-scratcher.
Furthermore, those ISEL numbers are pretty high. I believe SWO is like 3.5 GPA, 50 OAR, and 0 waivers.
In addition, our NTAG has basically changed policy (we have a TSO SOP deviating from the Cruitman)
We didn't get individual goals for each recruiter for 2026; we have a command-wide goal split between all of us.
It was >90 last year (split between each recruiter), this year it's 42 for all of us combined.

@bmorr44
I thought I had replied to you earlier; my apologies.
I am technically not allowed to tell you specifically what to study as a current Officer Recruiter.
This is due to applicants blaming their recruiters after they do poorly on the ASTB/OAR.
However, like @FormerRecruitingGuru said, there is a PLETHORA of good gouge on this board on both variants on the test.

So are you saying that ISEL doesn’t count toward your yearly recruiting goal? Do you need to send people to OCS to count towards the goal or just to the board?

ISEL does count towards the Recruiters/NTAGs' recruiting goals.
However, it bypasses designators that are "locked".
For example, Pilot was completely locked last FY. Everyone submitted for board review was pushed for many months until the new year/quotas opened. ISEL bypassed the lock and were selected generally within of submitting their Kit to NRC.

Applicants need to SHIP to OCS to count for our goal. Getting a PRO-N from the board will not count for us. Some of the annoyance comes from having PRO-Y(s) at the board and then waiting for FINSEL, and then sometimes waiting many months for OCS, because we don't get credit even though we have multiple people selected.

How much of your yearly goal would you say is ISEL vs board selects?

Hello sir, i was just curious if my degree has any effect on my SNA application for BDCP. I am currently working towards a B.S in IT and wondering if that aids my package in any way. Thank you!
