OCS 03Nov2023 SNA/SNFO Board

Anthony2000

PRO-REC Y SNA
Depth perception measured in arc speed, can’t be “less” than 40 (lower number is better for arc speed) and vision must be correctable to 20/20

That’s correct. I ran out of time to get it overturned

The NFO to Pilot program is super competitive.

I was told I passed at MEPS. Got a phone call from my recruiter two weeks later that I failed per aviation standards. Went to a civilian follow-up the next day per his instructions and passed. N3M declined it because she didn’t use a test they preferred. I found out Monday before the deadline so now I’m submitted for NFO. It’s been quite the month.
I feel this. The first time I applied I failed the depth perception at MEPS (my fault) so a couple months later my recruiter and I went to a nearby army base to retake with a different military doctor. Got all dp questions correct but was eventually notified that my visual acuity didn’t meet NA standards. Feeling down on my luck, my recruiter convinced me to go with NFO and “easily” transfer over to NA later so I naively accepted.

That was the point when I found this forum and learned how difficult it is to make that transfer but nothing I could do as I was already submitted for NFO.

Got selected for NFO, turned it down, got Lasik and reapplied for NA and it worked out. If NA is what you’re set on then be prepared for a journey.

Congrats, that is great news. I've been back and forth about this numerous times in my head. Just worry that even if I waited to go for SNA in the spring, that I wouldn't even be selected, and then have to wait for yet another application cycle.

quick question, what does depth perception arc speed mean? I have looked it up and looked through past forums but haven’t seen a decent answer / explanation.

It is an angle that your eyes use to perceive depth by using light rays, measured in arcseconds instead of radians.

In fairness, it doesn't say how many applied. I wouldn't know how competitive that program is either way, just an observation.
For what it's worth, I live in Pensacola and know several naval aviators who know of people who have completed this program. So it's definitely possible

There a few on this site that have done this but the timeline seems tight, some have talked about it and you can probably search and see what they said.

I did submit for this board but MEPs screwed up my paperwork and said I have bad depth perception. I know for a fact this is incorrect because I have done and passed an Air Force class 1 flight physical in Ohio and nailed depth perception. To add, the nurse at MEPs said my vision was totally fine the whole time. I got marked down for a low BMI but that got cleared when I gave my paperwork to the Navy at the end of the day. I'm talking with my recruiter with what my options are to fix this but its confusing. Right now they say I am only qualified for NFO because of this, I only applied to SNA. Anyone with experience to speak to this? As I get this problem fixed will it change whether the board sees me as an applicant? When would I have to fix this by? This is such a stupid predicament to be in that I had no control over whatsoever. Any experienced recruiter here that could point me in a direction?

Also, because this was spoken about recently on this page, visual acuity only really matters at the flight physical after OCS right? I thought the MEPs standards were just if you could be an officer in the Navy. Not any specific job in particular. Just thought I would clarify that as well.

So your application was or was not submitted for this board? It would have been for SNFO only since you are not medically qualified for SNA. The deadline was 3 Nov so you can’t change anything now. If you can correct the depth perception issue, you’ll still have to wait until the next deadline which is 11 March for the April board. Read back a few pages and search “depth perception mega thread.”

And no, visual acuity and depth perception are tested prior to the flight physical because they aren’t going to send you there without being relatively confident that you can pass the minimum medical standards

According to my recruiter my application was submitted. Does that mean it was withdrawn? I only was applying SNA. I'll have to ask my recruiter but he's being unresponsive right now. Thanks for the information.

Hmm. Might want to check with him that he didn’t submit it as SNFO
