    Judge Orders Release of PIR's

Good point. They are too shortsighted to see that this program will drastically improve safety in the long run, even if it may cause some families heartburn in the short term.

    Jets v Helos

Wow. Instructor pilots are short of gear. That is unsat. You know I've dumped 10000 pounds of gas immediately after coming off of a tanker to buster back for an unexpected charlie. That cost the taxpayers how many thousands of dollars? Yet in the same deployment I had to wait over a...

To go Nuke or not to go Nuke....do you have an option?

They had a big nuke draft when I was a senior middie, many moons ago. They wanted all the engineers in my class. I suppose my invitation must have been lost in the mail.

    Jets v Helos

One thing to consider is that you get a pretty one sided view in primary. Maybe times have changed, but when I went through there was not a single jet-background instructor in my squadron, or the base for that matter. I heard a lot of bad gouge and opinions about the jet community that turned...

cut the strings or don't apply

I ran into one of these kids the other day. Well, he ran into me, literally. Despite my honking this 17 year old backed his car right into mine. Within a minute he was on the phone to his dad to come rescue him (I was being nice and friendly, btw). His dad was cool, and offered to fix my...

Can Berkley CA become more anti-military?

P***ies. Even though I do not agree with their views, I could at least respect them if they stood their ground. If they had an iota of the fortitude of those they criticize (the marines) they would not back down. It was pretty apparent from the beginning the way this would play out. We've...

Stupid questions about the Rhino (Super Hornet)

I stand corrected. I was with A's my first cruise and D's for my second. See, I just proved my own point that one should not make claims about an airframe that one does not fly. :icon_wink

Stupid questions about the Rhino (Super Hornet)

I won't compare E-2's and Awacs because I have never sat in either. Unless you have flown A-6's, F-14's and F-18's your arguments are academic. In Afghanistan and Iraq the hornets went everywhere the tomcats did and employed more variety of ordnance than the tomcats. F-18's employed all...

Does Navy pay for FAA certs/ratings?

There is a very affordable option for a commercial equivalency. You are entirely on your own for the CFI, even if you are a military instructor pilot. There is no ATP equivalency, you are on your own even if MGIB helps you pay for training.
  12. Huggy Bear

Does Navy pay for FAA certs/ratings?

Generally no. I do know that a lot of my fellow quitters have used the MGIB to significantly discount the cost of their ATP/type rating training. A lot have used it to reduce Higher Power's cost from $7400 to 3-4K.

My airwing was fortunate to participate in the invasions of afghanistan and iraq. In fact, we were the first on the scene after 9/11. We were on our way home and just off the coast of Oman when that went down. The ship changed direction within the hour. We dropped a lot, but nothing too...

The Great Universal Health Care Debate w/Poll (note: it just passed both houses)

That's a good point that I was going to bring up. If we put aside universal health care for the moment, I think fixing our legal system would be a huge step in the right direction. Part of the reason our health care costs are so large are due to seedy lawyers, frivilous lawsuits and...

The Great Universal Health Care Debate w/Poll (note: it just passed both houses)

So you are fine with the fact that health care costs have quadrupled in the past decade and we americans pay more for medicine than the rest of the planet? Sounds like we could use more regulation and less attitude of "I got mine, screw the rest of you".

The Great Universal Health Care Debate w/Poll (note: it just passed both houses)

    Jet Fuel In The Water

Short answer yes. Ingested jet fuel is apparently one of the most toxic and carcinogenic substances known. It seems like that is said about a lot of things nowadays, but there is no debate about the effects of jet fuel. I never thought much of it at the time, we kind of laughed about it...

    Jet Fuel In The Water

When I was on the TR the water on the ship often reeked of jet fuel. Not always, but often enough that it became a running joke in the ready room. The corporate knowledge (a bunch of aviators-fwiw) was that the ship used the same tanks for water and fuel and that accounts for the residual fuel...

Flying for Navy, Marines or Air Force?

I hate to burst any young'ns bubbles here, but a lot of what ryno posted is true for the navy as well. However, how well you deal with it is all a matter of attitude, like hackerf15e said. The other-than-flying stuff wears you down after a while. Of my 5 peers from my fleet tour (the 5...

Hal, Have you seen their new first year pay. High 60's. They will be flooded with apps. I'd add mine, but their 2500 hours minimum is not fighter friendly. It seems like only the big majors lower their total time enough to get pointy nose military types.

F-18 Drops Inert Bomb in Virginia Beach

F-18 Drops Inert Bomb in Virginia Beach

That is very common for BDU-48s to come off on a hung ordnance approach. The reduced airload as you slow down to land allows the bomb to come loose. My last squadron would always dirty up over the target area if we thought we hung a 48 just to prevent what happened in Va Beach.
