I agree with those who said don't burn it just to use it. However, if modern advanced is anything like what I experienced a decade ago, you will not get leave except for christmas and emergencies. Same for the FRS. And likely the same for most of your fleet tour, except for maybe a week here...
Why are some of you guys so stingy with tips? There are times that a tip (buyoff) makes very good sense. This isn't TGIF and the worst that will happen is not getting cold jalapeno poppers and having to ask to get your drink refilled. These people are moving your shit and it is a major...
Huggy,
When my mom used to teach in Yuba City she had a female U2 pilot that would always come out and speak to the class. Being kids (or members of airwarriors), the question of peeing in the plane always came up. She actually showed them a diaper developed for females. Supposedly it was a...
Phone calls from the boat suck! My wife and I agree that we never had a good or fulfilling call from the boat. Thus we rarely spoke except in port. Email, however, worked great. And it was a wonder what a care package from her or a nice gift bought in a port and sent home could do for...
The idea that women have a moral high-ground and intellectual superiority completely pervades our culture. Look at any given television show and men are often assholes, idiots or dullards while the women are "right".
I still remember the conversation:
Her- "What the FUCK..."
Me- "Hey!, Huh?"
Her-" Come here..look" (points to the bed, the chick is slowly waking up, and I look like I saw a ghost)
Me- " I--" before I could get a word out..
Her- "BULLSHIT!"
Me- You remember that threesome fantasy...
Dropped a score over the years - always in training. The powers that be were all about precision weapons where I flew for "real". However, now that I think about it, the JSOW was a cluster munition, a 1/4 million $ GPS guided standoff cluster munition.
I'm glad we didn't sign. One of our...
"As a JO, I had ground jobs such as Comm Officer, PAO, 1st LT, ARO, Division Officer and with them come paperwork and headaches."
Bunk, you were a comm officer. What the hell is a comm officer? Is that some kind of busy work job created in 2-seat land. Your entire JO resume...
Cool pic and definitely a sight to see. I had a lot of the last of the A-6 guys do my flight school training and even served with a few in the fleet who transitioned to hornets. They had some good stories.
The old vs. new penis measuring contest is kind of silly. I have a lot of respect...
I've always used Frank Luke as my yardstick of manliness to the point of stupidity. He pulled out his pistol and started firing while surrounded by a squad equipped with rifles. It didn't go well for him.
Should be an interesting read.
I agree, and I always hated the cavalier attitude toward SSNs while I was in. They teach you at SERE school name, rank and serial number. Then they demonstrate how much personal info can be gathered and used against you off of just that info. The SSN started out as simply a tax identification...
Man. That just sucks. Sorry to hear it. I had to look it up. Here is a link if anyone is interested. RIP.

Any men's wearhouse should be able to hook you up with a decent looking suit for $500 or thereabouts. It can seem like a lot of money in college, but chances are you'll wear it at least a handful of times at through your college years. Think about this, if you don't get it you'll always wonder...
Ah Douglass. That's right. At least I got that it was two syllables correct.
That guy once yelled at me for missing a sim that wasn't even on the flight schedule. The other sim instructors just shook their heads at him.
There is a sim instructor at NAS Meridian who ejected three times. If I remember right, once from a T-2, once from an A-4 and once from an A-7. I'm rusty on his name, perhaps Wallace. One of the younger guys may be able to help you out, if he's still there.
If you want more stories like the above check out "aces against germany" and/or "aces against japan 1 & 2". Both read just like the above. They are written by eric hammel, a great warplane enthusiast.
45degrees Antenna Train Angle, 135 degree target aspect (don't waste your time looking outside the cockpit) close until you start to hear your IP key the mike or it feels like someone else is on the stick then speed brake out, wing down and pull while putting in a full boot of rudder. If done...
Really? I'm not in the military and we are discussing an article from a civilian publication. There have been plenty of threads where I had inside knowledge and I simply didn't participate.
I always assumed the same when writing or calling off of the ship. They censored mail in WW2, it wouldn't surprise me to learn we've adapted to the times and technology.

On the one hand, if true, this is very underhanded and demeaning.
On the other, we all know that our government has to do sneaky things to stay ahead of them. How many 9/11s have been prevented by our spies. We only hear about the ones they fail to...
Nice find. There seems to be two different conversations in this thread, retirement and OP's original intent. Thread split?
As far as the retirement goes, make no mistake, the 20 year vestment period for retirement is a retention tool, no more and no less; a carrot on a stick. It's not...
I got a little Verkleppt on my last flight. I had my family out on the tarmac when I got back. I was glad my kids got to see me get out of a plane at least once in their life.
For all you hornet guys...
I have been flying hornets equipped with civilian ILS for the last 6 months, and it's a beautiful thing.
I was told once that the Navy/Marine Corps jets are already equipped with the software and plumbing for civilian ILS. It is simply a matter of actually...
I was in the ready room on the Enterprise getting prepared for a later flight. Somebody called down to the ready room and told us to turn on the TV. We were off the coast of Oman and on our way home after 5 months at sea, the last two of which were in the gulf. Within an hour we were turned...
Warning, OT rant ahead...
This is just a forum and you're trying to help a "future wife" out. However, I used to hate it when the wive's club, sorry phrogshoe, I mean "spouse's club" :icon_tong, used to fold girlfriends into the mix of the club. It was just awkward, both for the pilots...
I had plantar faciitis bad for years. 2 things finally cured it. One - rest. I had a minor surgery that left me sedentary for two months and gave time for my foot to heal. Two - Wearing shoes with arch support, even around the house. I'm a real get home from work and kick the shoes off...
I remember that plane as fun and forgiving, but I had a bitch of a time learning how to taxi it my first few flights. I bagged a handful of backseat rides in it as a RAG instructor and was surprised how uncomfortable the seat was. I never remembered it hurting when I was a student. I...
I'll second the mothion for the navy lodge at bolling. I never smelled sewage and I stayed there a handful of times. I can't speak for the transport situation as I always had a car there. Seems like the neighborhood around bolling is rough. If you're drinking (do I even have to ask :)) just...
The turks and israelis actually get along fairly well and have worked together on exercises before. However, I highly doubt Turkey would let them use their airpspace. They barely let us use their airspace in 2003 for Iraq.
Sounds like one of my old skippers. He would stand by the duty desk and stroke his chin thoughtfully while not saying a word. 3 days later we'd hear from the OPSO about something or other we JO's did that he did not like. One of our Ground O's finally blew up about this one day saying: "We...
I think just about every instructor I had in primary dipped; they would use the relief tube to spit. Blehhh! How could you put your mouth where some guy had his Johnson?
An old branniff captain was telling me something about a certain amount of gas that a captain could get above the mins without any complaint from the bean counters. Do I have this right? And does it still exist at airlines?
No barracks, no chow halls, smaller PSD, less legal issues, fewer masts, fewer duties and watches to man, less medical required, smaller gyms, etc. - no wonder it's cheaper to just hire a contractor for the navy.
