    IFS Costs $751.25 to member

Well, I ran the same numbers when I bought my motorcycle. Comparing the gas it would take to drive my Jeep everyday versus the cost of a motorcycle payment and gas for driving it the majority of the time, I was able to actually save $150 per month. In turn, I put that into an IRA, let it do it's...

    IFS Costs $751.25 to member

Same deal with my motorcycle. I actually "make" money by driving it to and from work everyday instead of my Jeep, even though I'm still paying for the bike. Plus, I get the sweet front door parking spots and can lane split my way to work past all those suckers sitting on the Coronado Bridge. :D

UAVs, not just an Air Force gig anymore

Well, no offense to you, but ignorance is bliss. Most, if not all, uav's have a "home" feature. By that, if they lose comms or have some other sort of failure, they return to a predetermined home base. So, they may not be able to continue providing support to the area, but assuming they can...

UAVs, not just an Air Force gig anymore

Well, I wouldn't consider it "rushing into" anything, as US combat UAV's have been around since the early 80's (the Pioneer anyone?). And I'm assuming that you've probably never seen the capabilities these things have, and when you pair that with the current threat level, the simply just make...

    Nps?

With the housing market now, you never know. When I was there it was just my wife and I and we had a three bedroom/one bath house, about 1200 sq ft, that was plenty comfortable for us.
  6. insanebikerboy

    Nps?

Class load and amount of work put in is directly dependent on your degree. I got my masters in operations analysis and I put in a lot more study and work time than some of my friends in C4I and stuff like that. Add on a thesis project that is anything other than the normal working for a...

LA judge stops foster kid's enlistment

I've gotta agree with Mrkjoe. I joined the Navy when I was 17 and I had to have my mom give permission to the recruiter so I could sign the line, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to join. Is the judge putting off the inevitable of this kid joining the Marines? I think she is, and he'll...

    Is this rumor going around?

Not fat, just big boned! (I can say that b/c I was in the same boat at one point!)

    Is this rumor going around?

Sounds like personal experience there eh?
  10. insanebikerboy

    Is this rumor going around?

Haven't heard that rumor but we classed up without going, guess we'll be going on the backend of the rag. Most dudes I've talked to out here have similar situations.

Interesting NPR story on USS Bancroft

    Ah, ok gotcha....damn interwebs....!

Interesting NPR story on USS Bancroft

Can't tell if that's sarcasm or not but all my point is that it seemed (hell, it always seems) that the administration tries to say they're making it more "Fleet like" but will arbitrarily pick and choose what qualifies and what doesn't.
  13. insanebikerboy

Interesting NPR story on USS Bancroft

So, have they gotten rid of chow calls and chopping, b/c last time I checked I've never seen that in the Fleet.

Well, even if it's true you may not get it, see this thread.

    Whiting BOQ

Yeah, gotta agree with Scoob, barracks, or in this case, BOQ living isn't that bad, and considering you'll be two minutes from the squadron, not bad for those 5 am briefs. And while I know how the one girl with the furniture feels, she'll make it up with what she's not spending in utilities, etc.

    Jet Attrite?

During my time going through advanced, I knew one guy for certain that was attrited, and I want to say another guy was on the brink when I left. I will say that the way TIMS is set up and MPTS is written, it seems like it's harder to get attrited out than before. Of course, I'm only comparing...

    Moving to Japan with pets

Thanks for all the advice, I'm actually in San Diego right now, just started the rag and they are looking for people so I'm weighing the odds. It sounds like the biggest hurdle is simply finding a place to live, the entry req's don't seem like they'd be that difficult to get through. So...

    Moving to Japan with pets

I read the posts on the actual shipping part of taking a pet on the airlines but couldn't really find anything about physically importing a pet into Japan. I may be getting orders over there to HS-14 and I'm trying to iron out all the details to take my dogs. Anyways, I have a few questions...

    TH-57 fleet grounding

You can't have a class A based on $$, a Charlie is just under 1 million, but there is the loss of aircraft part of the req's, so a total loss of an Bravo or Charlie will do it. On the Inav/Vnav solos, controls are passed all the time. The only limitation was no passing the controls during the...

    Question on Grad School

Yup, that pretty much summed up the reason I did it too. And one year isn't that bad to be behind, when it's actually not an entire year anyways. And for comparison, I've actually finished ahead of some (not many) of my YG peers in helo-land. Attribute it to almost nil downtime between...

Anthropometric issues (are you too big or even too small or...)

Yup, if you can't fly the trainer, you can't train to fly the fleet jets. Waivers are pretty much impossible to get for anthro issues.

    Question on Grad School

For comparison's sake, I did the IGEP program for a year at NPS and I'm actually ahead of some of the guys I commissioned with (read: they've still yet to wing).

    Airsickness

Seriously, I'll second that. I never got airsick in the plane but felt pretty bad a few times. I had eaten a sandwhich or something like that beforehand, but when I would eat something like a breakfast burrito for a morning flight or hamburger for an afternoon one, no problems at all.

Yeah, Lemoore's what, at least 2-3 hours from the nearest beach?
  30. insanebikerboy

    Platform locations/Going westcoast

You're gonna select your pipeline first, then after you finish advanced and get your wings, your location. It wouldn't be wise picking a pipeline purely based on possible duty locations as you may never actually get to that duty station. That said, most every platform has squadrons on both...

To go Nuke or not to go Nuke....do you have an option?

Yes, they do a conventional surface cruise first, but the number crunchers are always looking several years down the road and predicting needs. So, it's always possible that any prediction of a shortage in nukes could happen but it's also possible there could be a glut in a few years too. That's...

To go Nuke or not to go Nuke....do you have an option?

Sub nuke, yes, surface nuke, they can stretch "voluntary"
  33. insanebikerboy

To go Nuke or not to go Nuke....do you have an option?

I've seen it happen with a few people I know, similar to FMRAM's post. They were told they were interviewing for nuke and didn't have any other choice, and lo and behold, they ended up being a nuke.

what are the hazards associated with rescue swimmer job?

Grow some skin, some thick skin, and then come on back, we'll be happy to help.
  35. insanebikerboy

To go Nuke or not to go Nuke....do you have an option?

This can be a catch-22, and like web-san said, if you go and get accepted you don't have any other choice. On the other hand, if you go and punt the interview and they can tell you're trying to tank it, it has the potential to be bad for you later on.

The NRA and all its thorns...

Which I agree with completely. I'm not a fan of the extremism on either side, but all I'm saying is sometimes you have to fight fire with fire.
  37. insanebikerboy

The NRA and all its thorns...

Guess I'll go against the thought of this thread, but I'm a life member of the NRA and love the fact that I am. While some of the stuff may seem extreme, I honestly feel that the extremity is warranted at times, otherwise who will counter the actions of some of the more zealous anti-gun crowd?

    Interesting IAP's...

Yeah, if memory serves, I think for a flight from Gulfport to there would mean about 1/3 of the flight time would be just on the approach.
  40. insanebikerboy

    Interesting IAP's...

I never actually had to fly this whole arc, but the instructors in the Inav class loved to make us fuel plan it out for the whole thing. Looks like you'd fall asleep flying the whole thing.

    Aircraft Nose Art/Pin Up Girls

I saw a show on the History Channel about the Hell's Angels and Sonny Barger. The show seemed to portray that they were a bunch of hellraisers but would go down fighting for the US flag. A conundrum, but interesting I thought. If I'm not mistaken, I think the show said Sonny was in the Army in...

    Bump fire?

Yeah, for H&K no cycling with Winchester white box is amazing to me. I'm not so sure about Sigs, but I put lots of white box rounds through my H&K .357 Sig (really hot round with some serious kick) with no feeding or lock-back problems.

    Bump fire?

Have you looked to see if they make a lighter recoil spring? You'd feel a little bit more recoil but it should make up for the weight of the slide.

Just food for thought, but I know several senior officers who said they initially had no intention of making the Navy a career.

That's what it looks like to me. I can't really see if he's pulling or pushing on the pistol but most dudes I've known who bump fire a pistol hold it just like he did.
