    Impact of Age?

I first spoke to an OSO at 24 and went to OCS at 25. There were LTs in my TBS company who were as old as 28. Most are now in A-pool. You're not even old enough to rate the "old guy jokes" at OCS/TBS.

    Question about officer obligation

The word around here is that the newer guys getting accepted with air slots will all be 8 years after winging, regardless of airframe. Not quite sure when this is slated to begin or if it already has, but its coming.

    Apply Navy and Marines?

I applied and was accepted to both. My OSOs were both "somewhat" aware of my actions, and the Navy really didn't care that I ended up going USMC. They've got more than enough qualified applicants to choose from, and your decision of one over the other won't cause them to lose much sleep...

    Question About App

Do what you have to do to express yourself. They (the powers that be) are not going to count your words... The limits are imposed to keep people from going overboard and submitting doctoral theses. Get your point across, but don't focus on trying to force out 2,499 words. In this case...

    Questions about becoming a Marine.

PLC is more or less "boot" for officers. Not the same thing, but no entirely different either. Try a search with 'PLC' and you'll get a plethora of information that should clear up most of your more specific questions.

    IFS Question

For us, IFS was a 6 week, paid vacation. You have virtually no obligations (barring fighting forest fires and/or other natural disaster assistance) other than getting your ass to the airport on time and learning/executing. It was FUN for my group. I had my FAA physical the morning after mess...

    scores

It really depends on the current pool of applicants. Those are decent scores, but you won't know how you stack up until you apply. The prior service will probably help you and the gpa is okay. Talk to a recruiter and submit... the worst they can say is no, in which case you resubmit and try...

    living in tbs

Yes, the new armory is getting close to completion and looks pretty sharp. The've begun construction of the new enlisted barracks, as well as some structure in LZ-6 next to the F-18. Nobody can figure out what it is, but its coming up fast. On the CO's quarterdeck, there is a model of the...

    living in tbs

Like Harrier Dude said. Things are essentially unchanged at good ol' O'Bannon Hall. The space isn't much, but you'll find that you only use the room for sleeping/waiting. On weekends there is the TBS Exodus, with everyone heading for DC or other exotic locales. Its really not too bad, and...

The Great Anthropometric Thread: Do you fit??

Same thing here... something about the prongs on top of the ejection seat being better suited than say, your head, for breaking through the canopy.

The Great Anthropometric Thread: Do you fit??

I'm 6'4, 215 lbs and recently got through the anthro part of my physical. When I was applying initially, the issue I had was sitting height. Like Harrier Dude said, they put you in the chair and check a variety of measurements including seated, arm length, femur, etc. Everything is compiled...

    Selections

[Threadjack] Whats the deal with the tilt pipeline... is it expanding pretty quickly, or will it be a gradual ramp-up? Do most of you guys expect it to be pretty competitive? I've heard so many mixed opinions on the Osprey, and my curiosity is overwhelming my hesitance to speak up. I...

    Disenrolled

We had some close calls on integrity issues... A guy smuggled some powerbars out to SULE II, one female skirted the truth with the company gunny, etc. Neither got the individual in question booted, but they stood tall before the man. Another candidate got caught cheating on a test, earning...

    IFS possibly cancelled

No, IFS isn't going anywhere. O'Bannon Hall is slammed right now, especially with The Naval Academy mids on deck and Delta picking up next week. Doing it after TBS actually provides a nice winding down period before heading down to P-cola, where you get to wait around some more. Funny that...

    injuries during OCS

Yes, it is important to avoid serious injury caused by trying to push through in certain situations. That said, you don't want to be known as the guy that always goes to sick call or ends up on light duty. You will hurt while at OCS- expect it. Talk to the corpsman. They will try to do what...

    Ocs

They still did this last summer with OCC 189. Heat casualities would get a bigass yellow circle on their back and front, as well as the racing stripes on the sleeves. We had one double-heat candidate that was pretty much as solid wall of yellow. The staff let us pick up cans of spray...

    IFS in PCOLA

For Fox company, they did not let anyone do IFS outside of Quantico/Manassas. Many tried, all were rejected. I think it depends on your company as well as the state of things in Pensacola. That aside, the programs up in VA are pretty solid, and its only 1-2 months. [edit] They (the powers...

Negative on the getting out. The Marine Corps will redesignate you... needs of the Marines and your preferences taken into account and what not. Depending on timing, could get lucky, or could get the shaft. No going home- When everyone talks about having to want to be a Marine first, this...

Looking back on OCS is fun... being at OCS (Marine) was a whole different story. I imagine the same thing applies to Navy guys. Just figure, if the guys before you made it through, you can too. Everyone has their ups and downs during the POI, but those that perservere look back and find the...

    ON the beach

Pretty sure the Navy pilot wait is less than that... As for hurricanes, the weather folks predicted a more mild hurricane season (relative to last year), which could still render you homeless by summer's end. That aside, some friends of mine live on the beach, and its ridiculously out of...

    Old but New

I know of a few guys that had similar problems with hernia surgery. In two cases, their initial waivers got rejected. Both resubmitted and are now in A-pool/Primary. Another guy broke his collar bone and had to get a pin put in- still waived some time down the road. Resubmit- worst they...

    PLC and USMC Reserves

A guy I rowed with in college went into the reserves with the same ideas... ended up going into Falluja the first time during his 2nd year at school. he made it back okay and is currently at TBS. They will tell you quite a bit IOT get you to enlist. Its not a bad path, but figure that there...

    Taking Leave During TBS?

Basket leave is that which is not subtracted from your leave balance. They pretty much fill out all of the paperwor, but never submit it. Its a lot less work for the staff and admin folks. Some TBS companis get it, others do not. It all depends, but really has no impact on your break...

    IFS Question

Its more because of the limitations of the aircraft used. The winds out of Mannassas can get pretty nasty, and will definitely exceed the max allowable crosswind for the 172. Combine that with student pilots and ORM... weather becomes a *****. ***A lot also depends on your instructor and...

    Running sucks

Falker, I headed to Quantico last Summer in a position very similar to your own. Being 6'4, 215 lbs, running had never been my strong point. My 2 month pre-ship run time was somewhere around 25 minutes, and my overall PFT score was salvaged only by good pullup and crunches... I was also...

    Shipping Personal Vehicle To TBS

They more than adequately reimburse you for the trip. I drove from San Diego, and got something like $1000. During zero week you will submit a form with you mileage, hotel costs, etc. The money will be direct deposited within a couple weeks. Definitely worth it, though gas prices were...

    IFS Question

You get 60 days to complete the program, and have to solo by 15 hours. This can, of course, be adjusted if the weather goes against you. Most take between 30 and 45 days to finish.

    IFS Question

Before I left San Diego for TBS, the Navy sent a group of 6 guys through the local school I was flying out of. This was almost a year ago, but it appears to be something that they still do. The flight school has to be certified and meet certain insurance standards in order to qualify. A guy I...

    Female VS Male PFT

I'm not too sure about that type of waiver, but if you're heart is set on flying why limit yourself to jets? I understand the attatchment after working on the Harrier for so long, but from what I hear everyone ends up loving what they fly. I came in to the Marines with a 'jets only' mentality...

  46. scotty008

    Female VS Male PFT

Keep in mind that you do not need a 300 PFT to get an air contract. Its a great thing to shoot for, but not everyone has one. I contracted with a 260, and seem to hover around 280 post-TBS. No, there are no extra points for being below 18 minutes on the run... Worry about getting your air...

    Next board?

The number of PLC-Air v. PLC-Ground varies from year to year depending on the needs of the Marine Corps. You can pretty much count on that when considering your career path while a Marine. If they need pilots, the number of spots go up, and vice versa. PLC is a little different because they...

Some advise on a stronger package.

As mentioned above, keep at them. You can take the ASTB up tp 3 times before you're locked in to your scores. Right now, that seems like your biggest negative. The gpa is important, but can be looked at differently if you're strong in other areas. Submit a package and see what happens...

I graduated OCC 189 last August. You will have the option of taking leave afterwards, and can show up at Camp Barrett any time up to report day. Some guys checked in early and may have ended up with work parties, but this is was rare. Most took off in graduation day and returned for check in...
