    Gen McChrystal and the President

McChrystal's statements have actually been in support of the general direction the President consistently seemed to be heading (based on a number of statements from March through mid-August.) To this point nothing inappropriate has taken place. If McChrystal disagrees with the decision of the...

President Obama Wins Nobel Peace Prize

Probably a combination of "not George Bush" and "if we give it to him, maybe he'll not escalate in Afghanistan and against Iran" by the decision committee.

I don't have any pictures, but do you remember the bar on the top floor of that tower on Yerba Buena Island (basically right above the tunnel that goes through the hill) that had an incredible view of the whole bay?

Just went there in June after my son's commissioning. I agree; great restaurant.

When I was there there were problems with contamination in the land bordering NAS; I imagine it's quite a bit worse on the air station itself.

Stationed there from 88-91; lived in the base housing on Yerba Buena Island. Our back porch view had Alcatraz and the GG Bridge in the center; Fisherman's Wharf - downtown SF on the left, and Marin County/Angel Island on the right! It was a great place to be stationed, with (at that time) a...

Stupid questions about Naval Aviation (Pt 2)

On a somewhat related topic, when in a relatively low hover over the water (40 feet is what we typically were at in the H-3 when using the sonar) you can sometimes pick up tacan stations at ranges significantly farther away then you can higher up.

Stupid questions about Naval Aviation (Pt 2)

You're listening on a particular frequency, so it would be unlikely to be someone else. It's worth it to take the time to identify the station. There was one time that I was going to a destroyer in the same task group as the carrier (I think we were taking a chaplain to them; sticks in my...

    Farewell Navy Atlanta 1943-2009

Will it still be an airfield? BTW, I hope that this is a typo. 9.5 square feet is not that much! "more than 9.5 square feet of information technology support function and will eventually be the home of over 750 Georgia Department of Defense employees."

Iran parade flyover does not go as planned

Yes, and if the rest of them went up in an explosion tonight I would be very happy. On a related note, from their perspective, this is not a good time for them to lose an AWACs.

    Survival Gear and Preparation...

I remember being completely drained after a 7+ hour flight where the air temp was approx 70, water temp in the upper 50's (so I was wearing the wetsuit); I'm sure that the last half of the flight the likelihood of a mishap was increased due to fatigue.
  24. E

    Survival Gear and Preparation...

Has anyone ever researched the dehydration/tiring aspect of wearing wetsuits/drysuits, and the potential decrease in performance vs the increased survivability in case of a crash?

    Your Thoughts

Everyone gets homesick, but if you can't handle it then you shouldn't be in the military. And if it is a determining factor in your choice of schools, it seems questionable that sdhitt will be able to handle it.
  26. E

    Survival Gear and Preparation...

Yeah, but you could release 8 hours of farts into the ready room at one time!
  27. E

    Your Thoughts

If you're not sure about the Academy, don't go. I tend to agree phrogpilot, though: if homesickness is a main reason for your choice of schools, I think you should question whether the military is right for you.
  28. E

    Survival Gear and Preparation...

It's been awhile, but from what I recall, 50-60 was optional depending on how far off shore, time of day, and whether or not you were "single helo" ops. (The reasoning being based on how long until someone would be able to pick you up.)
  29. E

    Survival Gear and Preparation...

Even in relatively warm water (high-50's, low-60's, like it is off the coast of SoCal most of the year) it doesn't take long to lose dexterity in your hands and to get hypothermic.

I'm skeptical, too. How much active duty was he doing prior to applying for the position? How long since his previous urinalysis? How long did it take to get the initial report back? How long was his hair? How long does that drug stay in your system? All those would factor in to the...

    Is 17 kids enough?

When firing someone who is in a minority, and the individual claims discrimination, it is as much an issue of the employer proving non-discrimination, as it is the employee proving discrimination. And employers often don't want to go through the expense and time of going to court. This often...

What are the "Foc'sle Follies" like nowadays? Have they been toned down due to political correctness? This video was tame compared to some of those skits. Of course, those weren't available for the whole world to see, either.

    MSNBC promotes Racism for ratings

I think those are an extremely small minority, cherry-picked by the news because they fit the picture they are trying to present. Accuracy be damned.
  45. E

    MSNBC promotes Racism for ratings

Perhaps, a very tiny part of the backlash is related to that. But far outweighing that is the amount of false accusations of racism that are aimed at people who oppose the President's policies.

Being the FNG (Surviving rites of passage in your first squadron)

Be ready when you are standing SDO watches; know where the manuals and "action plans" are. Make sure you're prepared to give the briefs. This is probably automated by now, but if it's not, keep track of your instrument approaches and time, and make sure you have your minimums at least a month...

Good points. I would add not to be hesitant about asking questions (NATOPS, tactics, etc.) but do a little research first.
