Yes - there were also a number of Americans who served with Canadian or British forces prior to U.S. entry into WWII.

    Blackwater 61

"The ends justify the means." It always has, to some degree. How is hiring mercenaries different than giving aid to another country in exchange for their support?

Stupid questions about Naval Aviation (Pt 2)

On a related note, wear different gloves for preflighting than you do for flying.

You could name them after famous bars. Who wouldn't want to deploy on the "USS Trader Jons"?

    Taliban Leader Captured

I read one article (forget where) that discussed the possibility of Pakistan getting some level of control over parts of eastern Afghanistan as payback for increased cooperation.

    Taliban Leader Captured

There's a lot of support in Pakistan for the Taliban/al Queda, including in the military (especially the ISI) and to a lesser extent within the judicial system.

Do(ing) it again; Water Survival Training (API is just the beginning)

It's been a while, and the autos I did post-HT8 were just in the simulator, but they were a LOT easier with tail rotor control. The percentage of over water ditchings that are autos is pretty small, isn't it? (As in close to 0% when I was flying, from what I remember.) It may be a reasonable...

Do(ing) it again; Water Survival Training (API is just the beginning)

Be careful - at least once an H-3 window was jettisoned by mistake, hit the landing gear sponson, bounced up, and damaged a couple of rotor blades. When HS-1 was flying mids (don't know if they were ROTC or USNA) one summer, one of them pulled up on the release handle, then put it back down...

Do they combine the two at all, or is HEEDS still just in a shallow pool?

Do(ing) it again; Water Survival Training (API is just the beginning)

Worst part of Naval Aviation! Luckily for me, I never had to use it. But speaking to people who had to do actual helo egresses, they were very grateful for having had the training.

Yeah, we weren't supposed to call it 'Bagel Station', either.

    Unusual Military Patches...funny and otherwise

Yeah - eight hours prior to pulling into Naples, they turned us around and headed us east. There was a big group of squadron wives that had flown out from Jacksonville for that port visit; apparently they were waiting on the pier at the scheduled time, and the ship never showed up.

    Unusual Military Patches...funny and otherwise

Nimitz (CVW 8) spent most of the summer of 1985 steaminginside a small box off the coast of Lebanon (this included the time when TWA 847 was hijacked and taken to Beirut). They had patches made up for "Beno Station" (Be no liberty, be no beer, be no women)- unfortunately they were quickly...

    CORPSE MEN (sic)

As noted by others already, you're completely uninformed about the Republicans not providing input. The Republican decision to try and defeat the bill is because the bill is a piece of crap, which is also the reason why the smart Democrats don't want to force the issue, and pass it without...
  17. E

    CORPSE MEN (sic)

The Republicans are stonewalling? Actually, it's the Democrats who are refusing to listen to Republican proposals. And the Democrats had the votes to get the bills passed without the Republicans. So apparently they weren't such great bills after all.
  18. E

    CORPSE MEN (sic)

Actually, no he didn't. The difference is that the press made a much bigger deal about Pres Bush's errors than they have about Pres Obama's.

    MIdshipman Fails Drug Test

Stay away from getting involved personally - try to be aware of when your troops are having problems, and then get them to the people who are trained in those areas. Don't be giving advice in those areas!!

    MIdshipman Fails Drug Test

"If I'm able to get my wings I will constantly be looked at as "oohh I know how he got here he's black....." " Worst case is that a few people will be slightly suspicious initially; but as long as you pull your weight, are decent in the aircraft, and don't use "minority" as a reason if...

Helo Pilot being medically redesignated...need help!

I hope it works out for you; my wife has had cluster headaches (and the associated facial pain) for about 17 years, and I know how debilitating it can be. Sorry that I don't have any suggestions other than that it sounds like it will be a medical decision, so medical types could probably give...

Big Government and natural disaster relief (Haiti from Foreign Policy viewpoint)

This describes the root of the problem in a nutshell: http://www.slate.com/id/2241861/
  26. E

Big Government and natural disaster relief (Haiti from Foreign Policy viewpoint)

Yes, culture is much more than the religion and food. Where do they recover to? They need a complete revamping of their society, or they will never get out of this cycle. But I suspect that nothing significant will happen - there will be a short-term influx of aid for the next few months...
  27. E

Big Government and natural disaster relief (Haiti from Foreign Policy viewpoint)

There is no soapbox, here, just the facts. The root cause of the poverty is the corruption - lack of effective property rights (which is the single biggest issue keeping most third-world nations from improving), government siphoning off the tax and aid money for their own benefit instead of...
  28. E

Big Government and natural disaster relief (Haiti from Foreign Policy viewpoint)

You're missing the point, probably because I worded it poorly. Had there been a history of stable, effective government and culture in Haiti, what would the situation be like now? And how long would it take for them to recover? Dramatically different than the situation they are facing today and...
  29. E

Big Government and natural disaster relief (Haiti from Foreign Policy viewpoint)

    1) Haiti's suffering is 99% due to it's own culture (incl government) 2) Out government infrastructure has nothing to do with our ability to project forces around the globe.
  30. E

Big Government and natural disaster relief (Haiti from Foreign Policy viewpoint)

Haiti - that is the root cause of their problem, and the root cause of why the infrastructure is in such poor shape, which is why the aid is going to be slow getting to the people who need it.
  31. E

    CG CO relieved

I agree - Major Hasan and Ft Hood show the results of that attitude. (Which also includes those who transfer someone with known issues rather than addressing the issue themselves.)
  32. E

Big Government and natural disaster relief (Haiti from Foreign Policy viewpoint)

It's not a question of the size of the government, it's a question of the amount of corruption in the government.
  33. E

Better to own or rent in Jacksonville, given current economy?

I had to laugh at that - was stationed in Jax from 82-85; I swear that they deliberately timed the lights on Blanding so that you would never get two greens in a row.

Global Warming, Seriously its Freakin Cold Everywhere!

The point behind the theory is that they don't know how much the globe is warming, and they don't know what is causing the warming, and they don't know how much of the warming is caused by mankind. But they do know that mankind-caused global warming advocacy is where the money and academic...

Why does the Marine Corps have its own "Air Force"?

Practical solutions are important in wars; in between wars they are not what get people promoted, because they don't carry much weight with bureaucrats, who are more concerned with process and protecting their territory. So they get "forgotten" in between wars, when the bureaucrats increase...

    Back in the Day.....

From what I remember from a couple of articles in Approach, FOD was almost never caused by items on the ramp; the vast majority of the FODs were caused by loose screws/panels/tools on the aircraft itself.

Uniform Question for son who will be commissioning.

You might consider getting him a sword instead of a uniform. As the others have noted, the dress uniforms are worn rarely, especially by JOs, and while they will last a long time, if he gains weight they may not fit in few years. Swords are forever (sorry, DeBeers) and are a great...

TERROR IN THE SKIES: Man tries to blow up NWA/Delta plane arriving Detroit

How much convenience are we willing to give up and/or increased risk are we willing to accept before we start profiling? ("We" referring to the controlling authorities.) Seems that they don't care about the convenience, and they also don't really care about the risk, until "the unthinkable"...

The Great Universal Health Care Debate w/Poll (note: it just passed both houses)

Yes, but polls are very valuable if you take the time to find out what groups were polled, how many were polled, and what the questions were. And when, despite the differences in format, day-of-the-week the poll is taken, whether it was of adults or likely voters, or from a more liberal or...
