Pentagon says ships harassed by Iran

Thank you for fixing my ignorance. As someone who has a problem when others use terms incorrectly, I appreciate the correction.

Roger Ball, good and not-so-good questions about the world of "Paddles"

Pretty sure it is. He was on the flight deck and manned-up when the fire started. Flames were right underneath his A-4, climbed out on the probe to egress over the flames.

Pentagon says ships harassed by Iran

I know that I won't get the answer here, but damn what is the ROE in the straights? Fire when you see the whites of there eyes? I wonder how much of Fester's "thiiiiiiiiis close" was actually the holdback of the Skipper worried about flushing his career if he went weapons free. Sorry for the...

    Coast Guard RC Helicopter

Thanks for the advice, but I was optimistic with that prediction of how much longer it would last. The last crash broke the stem that the tail is attached to. I'm going to go in for some super glue surgery and make the tail straight then.

    Coast Guard RC Helicopter

My brother-in-law gave the Apache Air Hog to my son for Christmas. After like 3hrs TT and mashing the trim like crazy, we still have to put in full right rudder to fly straight. I think we have maybe an hour left on it the way he's crashing it...

    Different platforms/different lifestyles?

HA! Good one. Depends on the helo. In the H-2, maybe not. But in an H-1 with -60's mounted and manned, sure. Also, if you are implying that said topless woman would stop and take another look at a jet, that may be. But if you are piloting said jet, are you going to be around to notice?

    Our Surface Combatants

That simple, huh? I guess since the 727 entered service the year I was born, I don't consider it old. ;)

    Favorite Commercial Aircraft?

Having just completed four legs of flying with a mid-major carrier, it got me to wondering what the fine folks on AW consider their favorite commercial aircraft. Either as a pilot or as self-loading cargo (or both). Try to limit yourself to just one, but if that proves too difficult do a Then...

AW Zaps....post a pic of your sighting...

I knew that. I can and do read bio's. Hence the "wink" after my statement. That's really too bad. I'm kinda disappointed in the lack of pictures I took as I was rolling through my pipeline. Didn't think it mattered then, but 20 years later and the onset of CRS makes me wish I had taken more...

AW Zaps....post a pic of your sighting...

Must not have been flying with an Aircrewman ;) Easily 90% of my contemporaries always flew with a camera in their helmet bag. The Canon AE1 or the AE1 Program were the cameras of choice. When on deployment, we had the ships camera with us as well. The Callaghan had a sweet Canon F1 with a...

    Scariest Day/Night Flying

Some of the guys I flew with in the Reserves were 'Nam vets and they told me that the red cross was just a targeting aid for anybody shooting at them. They also told me some less than nice stories about certain dustoff pilots.
  24. HeloBubba

    Different platforms/different lifestyles?

Another option is to have a leather name tag so faded and abused that one's name and/or rank is not visible on it. I have said this before elsewhere on AW, but it bears repeating here: When was the last time you saw a fixed-wing aircraft stop, backup, and take another look at the naked woman...

Yeah, what was that about? Who blinked first? Lame. BTW, anybody know if the players have any say about the command patches on their jerseys? Reggie Campbell is wearing an HSL-43 command patch, nice! Also, anybody notice that most of the command patches on the Navy side are mostly of the...

    Stormy Carrier pics?

The fact that the weather decks tend to be secured during heavy weather might preclude a wealth of pictures of the type in which you seek. :D In other words, they don't let you outside when the weather is bad so not a whole lot of pictures get taken.

How Are Mustangs Viewed In the Officers Ranks?

He should have known better. The more you resist a callsign, the more likely it is gonna stick. I know because it happened to me.
  35. HeloBubba

    Repost

Not that it ever happened to me, but in the H-2 it would be bottomed collective, the main door being thrown all the way open / back, and a little left pedal to get some wind in the back. No ICS calls required (we weren't hearing them anyway).
  36. HeloBubba

    Repost

AW's do NOT sleep in their aircraft while it is flight. ;) There is always a very good reason they don't hear you calling them on the ICS. The sensor operator in the H-2 was not privileged enough to be able to hear the RAWS tone. We just trusted the stick-throttle interconnect to pay attention...

    What Percent get Jets?

This used to be a valid question for us Aircrew-types when S-3's were around. Going through A-School I worked to keep my grades up as I wanted S-3's bad (not so much for "jet", but for tailhook AND it had the most modern sub-hunting gear at the time). The downside was that ALL AW's with good...

My original post was to offer reasons why an Officer might want to avoid keeping a MySpace page. But you just reminded me of another reason and it is not terrorists. It is identity theft. Aircrew (newbie question)

In my day, the only rating guaranteed a crack at an Aircrew billet was AW. So you would enlist as an AW, go through the entire course of training (which included time in Pensacola), and get assigned to your community. Even then there were chances you would end up in a CV-TSC and not flying...

MySpace is seen as a tool for high-schoolers. Use of it connotates immaturity (not saying that it is right or wrong, but the court of public opinion can be a bitch). Also, As an officer, you would want to avoid anything that might undermine your authority. The TMI that ends up on MySpace pages...

    Helicopter pilot dies...

I thought of that, but what about the fist-over-your-head that is supposed to go along with that? Just as a personal note, instead of a fist, I held up fingers to show how many folks were coming in. Just as one more bit of info that might come in handy.

    Vance/moody Bubbas Read!

VOX was not used in LAMPS Mk I West. We never trained on it at all. Indeed, the one evolution where VOX would come in most handy (an electric hoist control failure, switch to manual where you push on two hydraulic valves to move the hoist up and down), we still didn't use it. When practicing a...

    Helicopter pilot dies...

Wearing my former PC hat, we never cleared folks in from the left (or 9 o'clock). Anybody who need to approach a turning helo gathered out at the 3 not under the arc (usually by the NC-8), waited for the PC to get the pilot's attention, then "walked" them in. As for Sly's question, what would...
