    Helicopter pilot dies...

I agree with all of this, but just because you approach the helo from the side does not mean you cannot get hurt. The rotor arc can "dip" in all directions. Yes it moves most at the 12 o'clock, but 3 and 9 get their fair share of dip love as well.

Thank you for confirming my suspicions that something wasn't quite right about "Dick" Anderson.

    F-18's in Colo.

That's probably because TD was still in use by the LAMPS Mk I RAG (HSL-31) when HSL-41 established. TH is/was HSL-37. TG was HSL-35. TF was HSL-33.

    UAL DAL merger

I stand corrected. If he left NWA for better money, then why did he come back to the airline industry?

    Return to OCS after DOR?

You are correct, while he may be paid E-5 pay, he is NOT a Sergeant. His status is Cadet and should wear the appropriate insignia. Of course I had a devil of a time keeping track of his exact status as I read his blog.

    Chinese sub surprises Navy

We used it in HSL (Mk I) West as well. As a rescue swimmer, we didn't jump from the aircraft until we got our three taps on the shoulder.

    UAL DAL merger

It is not number of aircraft that are important to the average flyer, it is the routes and number of flights on those routes. For example: UAL flies LAX - JFK 3x per day. Delta flies LAX - JFK 4x per day (these are not actual numbers). Would the merged airline fly LAX - JFK 7x per day? My guess...

That guy is a Complete Toolbag. His writing is long winded and circuitous. Get to the point already.

    Helicopter pilot dies...

Why does this sound like a recipe for disaster? In a Navy helo? In the HT's maybe? I recall this as being strictly forbidden in the LAMPS Mk I world. Of course I could be just not recalling correctly (I did separate 21 years ago today). Can anybody out there with West Coast H-2 experience...

Especially if they keep the Delta CEO. Isn't he the guy that drove Delta to BK in the first place? How does he keep his job?

    Chinese sub surprises Navy

As a former AW (the actual Navy rating, not someone who used to post here ;)), I can tell you that ASW skills atrophy FAST. I spent 18 months going through an aircrew pipeline where ASW was the be-all end-all. My first exercise in the fleet was where I found out exactly how little ASW the LAMPS...

    Military's porn ban questioned

This is NOT new. Back in my day (early/mid 80's), the enlisted clubs used to have strippers come in on a regular basis. Usually during he slow times to get the patronage up (like on Sunday afternoons at NAB Coronado's Gator Gardens, for example). Then one day they are no longer at the clubs. The...

Good Prowler Porn: Around the Boat

Which was always my thinking. Heck, I didn't even trust my collar to stay up so I always wore a nomex hood under my helmet (which you can see clearly here: the hood also served a purpose to keep the cold air off your neck when you had to stick your head into the slipstream to keep your eyes...

This is why pinnacle landings were designed for skids, not wheels. ;)

    split-NFO-Helo? 2P? Black Hole? What?

Olden Tymes indeed. Can you shed any light on how/why the procedure was changed? Because way back in the far olden tymes, the offset was to help get "clean" wind over the deck.

    Penske Truck Rental

I like Penske. We used them when we moved from Syracuse, NY to SoCal. Very easy to deal with, the equipment was in great shape, and they were the cheapest.

    split-NFO-Helo? 2P? Black Hole? What?

Certainly a moment to grab your attention is when you are approaching your small-boy deck at night and the guy up front with his hands on the sticks says "you have the controls, I have vertigo". So now the guy with the controls is on the wrong side of the cockpit. If he's good at cross-cockpit...

    CVN Gary Hart

We are in agreement as that's what I got from them too. What kind of ship defense did the Brits have during the Falklands? Anything like our CIWS or BPDMS (or whatever the follow-on to that system is)? You know, to knock those suckers out of the sky...

    I'm a Idiot!

I had thought of that, but that line of thinking connotates that he will do his minimum military time and get out. I didn't think that was the case. Now if you fly in the military until you can't fly anymore, your business degree will be a little bit stale when you get out and are ready to use it.
  36. HeloBubba

    I'm a Idiot!

He doesn't mean compensate as in pay him back, he means compensate as in letting him miss AFROTC instruction while he is away. Here is another angle to think about: if flying is your dream, why is the business degree so important?
  37. HeloBubba

    CVN Gary Hart

The answer to the question was not what AEW there is close to the carrier, we all know that is E-2 (nobody said the helo would protect the carrier). The question was what AEW is available AWAY from the carrier. One of the answers was an AEGIS cruiser, and they may have a LAMPS III bird embarked...

    Ah-1z

Good points Phrogpilot. I had to zip over to Bell's website to make sure I understood the intentions for the Y and Z. The first thing I noticed was the move to 4-bladed rotor systems. Which in turn means blade folding on an airframe were that wasn't required before. With that added point of...

    Ah-1z

Which was kind of my thinking. I mean the Navy is putting just about all of their helo missions in the -60, which was originally developed as the H-1 replacement for the Army. It shouldn't take too big of a leap of imagination to figure it can replace Marine H-1's as well. Are the Y's new-builds...

Wait. Weren't you in a standard flight suit? It is not just a matter of dropping trou, you have to essentially strip to the waist and then some.
