AW Zaps....post a pic of your sighting...

I had the same thought. If you look at the thread where they were trying to come up with the design, they had one with all three wings on it. Too bad I wasn't a member yet so I could recommend the three wing version.

What's wrong with just taking care of business BEFORE you fly? During my time on Active Duty, nobody I flew with EVER had to drop a deuce while in the air. A few instances of using the relief tube, but nothing else. Then again we only flew 2.5 on a bag of gas, so going before and after is...

AW Zaps....post a pic of your sighting...

Back in my day, without the internet, ordering det stickers would be troublesome. But the equipment to cut a fancy stencil and spray paint were items readily available in any det 'boardship loadout. Actually, with the application of the proper chemical, spray paint is easier to remove than a...

They weren't our mail bird on the first strike. Second strike, no excuse :(. At least it wasn't me that did it.

AW Zaps....post a pic of your sighting...

I may be wrong, but I'd say it is rather universal. I'm not exactly sure of the tradition of the zap. I seem to recall that it came about in the early days of the carrier Navy. When multiple carriers were working together, it wasn't unheard of for a pilot to land on the wrong ship. His plane...

    Women issues

Here is a timely article lifted off of Military.com (which lifted it off of another media source...) Navy Strives to Retain Pregnant Sailors Women have never played a bigger role in the Navy. They fuel and fly fighter jets, stand watch on the bridges of warships, and build bombs. They also...

AW Zaps....post a pic of your sighting...

I thought that for an aircraft to qualify as a zap-able target, it had to be one to which you would not generally have access (for example, the two Italian H-1's that came to visit our squadron that left with a Kaman SH-2F sticker on their bellies). Also, the actual placing of the zap required...

    First MH-60R squadron is established!

Same here. Things the Army did that I never liked: - Flying over water without a personal flotation device. - Flying over water, or way out in BFE in a single engine aircraft. - What's a FOD walkdown? For each one of those there were some things they did that the Navy would NEVER do in my day.

    First MH-60R squadron is established!

Having flown both in both Naval and Army Aviation (500+ in the Navy, less in the Army), I agree with everything you are saying about the Army. I believe it is the fruit of their Warrant Officer program. They wanted helicopter pilots to be specialists and that's what they are in the extreme. I...

    First MH-60R squadron is established!

Not to insult bobbybrock, but I think hawkmech was equating Army Aviation as a whole to the minor leagues and Naval Aviation as the big leagues. You are correct bobbybrock about the amount of collective flight time stashed in the Guard. I flew with Viet Nam era pilots, not a whole lot fazed...

    Women issues

At some point before you are 30 you will most likely have a non-flying job. I think an infant at home while you are going through the SNA (or SNFO) pipeline is an added stress you can do without. Speaking as an "older" dad (first kids at 38, never planned it that way, just the way it worked...

    Craziest Thing You Ever Heard

I will not continue to challenge the OPSEC for SERE school after this. I just wanted to post three more links. One is a blog about the story of SERE training and GTMO interrogation being linked. In the blog are details of what happens at SERE. Some of it factual, some of it way off. The second...

Not super cereal. I only put that last one in there for fun. I'm sorry that your implication didn't come through (perfect example of the loss of nuance when communicating strictly via text). Here's a little write-up about the 10th Mountain's aviation brigade: http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/agency/army/10mtn-avn-bde.htm as you can see they have been deployed to Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan. On a personal note, my Air Ambulance Army Reserve unit backfilled the 10th...

Not to mention that during basic training, only the smokers were allowed breaks (at least in some recruit companies, not mine). Some dudes have told me that they took up smoking so they could get a break.

    First MH-60R squadron is established!

It bums me out that this mentality formed well after I got out of the Navy. Shooting guns from a helo was one of the reasons I joined the Army Reserve (along with getting to fly again). How does an aircraft being configured as a gunship affect the SAR mission? Is it precluded because of Max GW...

How long is your Flight Physical good for?

If you are in a flying status, they will send you to the closest flight surgeon. I was deployed on a DDG with a LAMPS Det. There are typically NO doctors on a 'can, only HM's. We were in the middle of the IO when my physical was getting ready to expire. My det flew me (and a bunch of gear...

Forgive my ignorance (I have only recently joined AW and I'm still getting back up to speed on the current status of Naval Aviation), but am I to believe the O-Course no longer exists? And the reason is so females can make it through AOCS, API, NACCS or whatever?

    Coolest Self-Portrait

Yeah, it does. It doesn't help that I'm barely 19 when this pic was taken. It also doesn't help that I got to the paraloft when the helmet choices were slim. So I get stuck with an XL that makes my head look small. No more babyface for me now.:(

    Coolest Self-Portrait

First picture taken at HSL-31 (West Coast H-2 RAG) circa October 1983.
