The Great Flight Jacket Thread (wearing/buying Leather, NOMEX, WEP jackets/patches)

The question of "when to wear the jacket" gets funnier and funnier. The other day a squadronmate saw me in my leather jacket and asked me if it was ok for "us" (replacements) to wear them. It gave me a chuckle to get asked that by a dude wearing wings.

    Glock 36 vs. P220 Compact

    The G19 w/ 16 rounds is still a lot lighter than a P229 w/ 12 rounds of .40.

    FN Five SeveN (sic)

Why bother with a carbine in 5.7mm when you can get the only true semi-auto carbine..... The .30 carbine has more than twice the energy of the 5.7mm and a longer effective range. But I was just playing with the following http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.30_Carbine...

    Glock 36 vs. P220 Compact

This is something that makes the G36 unique compared to the other Glocks, it's the thinnest of all. It uses a single stack and still crams 6 rounds into a tight package.

    Glock 36 vs. P220 Compact

Is weight going to be an issue to you? I would think that the Glock would be considerably lighter for the CCW role. Consider heading over to www.glocktalk.com It's a forum and there are plenty of G36 owners their that have shared their experiences. I'm sure this very topic has been...

Fallen Angels - Admin Seps for all?

Yeah, you are gonna have to explain that one. Is there actually a case of someone NPQing for pilot and NFO, wasn't allowed to move to another community, then got kicked AND told to pay back their education? I find this pretty hard to believe. Now if someone got into legal trouble or an...

four year duty?...Is contract negotiation a possibility

You would not do well in our community. You obviously have no sense of humer, lack a thick skin, can't take criticism, and are narcisistic. You would get an ass kicking (figuratively) in the military, exacerbated by the fact that you completely (admittedly) lack social skills. Sorry, no...

F-35B/C Lightning II (Joint Strike Fighter)

We've touched on this issue in another thread about a NYT article. The DoD will be forced to cut some big ticket items at some point. What are they for the Navy? JSF, P-8, LCS, new subs to name a few. Good thing we have our helo plan figured out ahead of time!

NYT: Pentagon Expects Cuts in Military Spending

I'd be crazy to not agree about the helo part! The Boston Globe article that was posted starts to name the major places where the military can trim the fat on the budget. I love the idea of techinically advanced toys, but the cuts need to happen. The amount of time it is taking to procure new...

Seeking advice on that first handgun or next weapon purchase? Ask AW!

Seeking advice on that first handgun or next weapon purchase? Ask AW!

Maybe you failed to realize that all (well, almost) the .30 carbine for purchase is made factory new...because the round is freaking popular. There are a ton of M1 carbines out there and the owners do a lot of shooting. What are YOU gonna do when all the milsurp .30-06 dries up? Buy the gas...

Seeking advice on that first handgun or next weapon purchase? Ask AW!

Get a used Glock in 9mm. It'll be under 500 and with the right loads 9mm is a good round. For the rifle side, get a Ruger 10/22 in .22lr. Good times for all.

    Preliminary Service Selection Numbers Released

I think the switch from Prowler to Growler probably wont create more "slots" for pilots, not noticably anyways. Going from 4 jets to 6 over the course of how many years?? The change will probably be transparent.

I would be more concerned about this type of situation. At least I'll have orders to my fleet squadron within a month.....then who knows! If they did cut guys who have already winged, it'd be a colossal waste of cash and time, especially since we were supposed to be committed for 8...

I'm not advocating a military budget cut....but we've certainly earned the scrutiny we will be under. HeliFOs

It wouldn't be as simple as altering NFO training to use them in the Helo world....you'd have to completely revamp the pilot training as well. The HTs are meant to produce competent copilots and the FRS produces competent copilots in model. Our sylabi would have to be lengthened to produce...

    HeliFOs

Being a Foxtrot guy, we don't need an NFO. Sure we train for the ASW and ASuW missions, but a we are also supposed to do the SAR, CSAR, log, and NSW missions. Like Pags said, what the hell would a FO do during those missions? We do pax runs, log runs, and are the strike group's SAR asset...

    HeliFOs

I guess they are "cheaper" for the Navy because they didn't spend the money on the Academy etc.... But from API on....I'm pretty sure they cost as much to train as an Ensign....after all, it's the same sylabus.
  40. NozeMan

    HeliFOs

Yeah, you pretty much validated our arguement for no FOs in helos. Do we in helo land like to have an extra set of eyes and an extra pair of hands? Yes....we use two pilots. There is a difference between the "utilizable asset" you describe and two NATOPS qualified pilots in the front of the...

That is an interesting point, maybe HooverPilot or FLYTPAY could chime in on the dynamics of ASW or ASuW from the S-3 side of the house. But they still had one things helos or P-3 don't..... I'm just more comfortable with plenty of hours and experience between both front seat guys...
  42. NozeMan

    HeliFOs

I think I'm leaning towards this side of the arguement. I think it's safer to have 2 qualified pilots up front, especially when our mission (speaking from the HS side) involves being at low altitudes over the water day or night...especially if night. If someone get's vertigo at 150'....there...

    Does College Major matter?

Thanks for clarifying. In the other threads about selection criteria we forgot to mention the special section you check if you went to ERAU. Are you serious? Where you went to school has no bearing on selection, it's based on GPA, major, etc. All the NROTC people select from the same pool....
