Stupid questions about Naval Aviation (Pt 2)

When in this condition they are good places for a slimy wog to grab a quick drink. Even if they are not thirsty.

UAVs, not just an Air Force gig anymore

This helo crew member did Maintenance when not flying. The real slack time came when the aircraft WAS flying. Not much for maintainers to do when the helo is off the boat. 'cept play cards or some such (not a whole lot of personal electronic entertainment devices available to the general public...

    Saluting Rules Amendment

You get ingrained to render a hand salute to the colors when covered (and in uniform) while you are on Active Duty. After I got out, it was always my first instinct to hand salute the flag at ball games and such and had to remind myself that I had to do it like the rest of the civilians. Well...

Stupid questions and smart answers about jet fuel (JP-4, 5, 8, etc)

The H-2 had an adjustment on a miscellaneous fuel control device in case we were stranded at some out of the way USAF facility and had to fill her up with JP-4.

    Navy SAR Swimmer school

The 2nd post in this thread was full of good advice. The only thing that was left out was some sort of exercises to build up mental toughness (not that I know of any). While being in good physical shape will help get you through many or SAR school's trials, you will need mental toughness for the...

Stupid questions about Naval Aviation (Pt 2)

Sorry, I have no frame of rerference for 6+ hour flights. 6 hours was the absolute max duration on an H-2 before having to shutdown to grease the tail rotor. Even then it took two refuelings to get to 6 hours because all we got was 2.5 out of a single bag of gas.

    Sea Time?

How about just thinking that you'll be underway/at sea for 11 months out of the year. That way when it less than that, you'll think you are getting a good deal. Sailors belong on ships and ships belong at sea. - Ancient Naval Wisdom

    HeliFOs

Comin' late to this party, but to address a comment a page or two back and a recurring theme in this thread: Speaking as the GIB in a LAMPS (MK I) bird, I was very happy that night (one of those nights were the ocean is glass and the stars reflect off of the water. So the flight deck looks like...

Stupid questions about Naval Aviation (Pt 2)

That's just your helo pilot experience talking. I remember when the "folks back home" would ask about bailing out of helicopters. I always told them that there is no bailing out in the helo world...we ride 'em in.

Poll: U.S. Military Supports McCain 3-1 - Military Times

Let me see if I can help: Doesn't matter since most of what your President says is written for him by someone else This is the best way to go. You vote for your own self-interest. If you like neither candidate, then which one will damage you the least. I know I am proud that I served under...

    No-notice checkride?

NATOPS = Dash 10 in the Army. A NATOPS contains much more material than a Dash 10. I have a NATOPS for an SH-2F and a Dash 10 for a UH-1H/V sitting here side-by-side. The NATOPS has almost twice as many pages. Not really an apples-to-apples comparison, but it is the best I have.

Full Metal Jacket That entire opening speech by Gunnery Sergeant Hartman is timeless. This one was a favorite on the boat I cruised on: When a man with .45 meets a man with a rifle, you said, the man with a pistol's a dead man. Let's see if that's true. Go ahead, load up and shoot.

Stupid questions about Naval Aviation (Pt 2)

Having done both Navy and Army aviation. Navy does it better. The Army comes across as "looser" and the big brass (O-5 and up) don't seem to have the best grasp as how to use their aviation assets.

Stupid questions about Naval Aviation (Pt 2)

MB, gator, Thanks for bringing this dinosaur up-to-speed. I can understand the correllation between less cruises equals more pilots per cruise, but what was your OpTempo underway? We flew 10 hours per day, 5 hours in the morning (7:30 - 12:30) and 5 hours in the evening (17:30 - 22:30). We...

East Coast LAMPS Mk III single-ship Dets deployed with 5 pilots? How many AW's? LAMPS Mk I single-ship Dets were standardized at 4 pilots, 2 AW's. They would sometimes bump it to 3 AW's if we had extra. But I never saw more than 4 pilots.

    Last flight

I was fortunate enough to know ahead of time when both my last flight in the Navy (active duty) and my last flight in the Army (reserves) were going to happen. My last flight in the Navy while a bit of a let down at the time, was kind of paling in comparison to getting out (which was about 45...

    This is good....

In my Army Reserve Air Ambualnce unit there wa a flight medic that nobody wanted to fly with. No sooner would we slide the doors closed on our UH-1V's, this sum'bitch would float the most hellacious air bisquits. And then laugh while we all choked. :yuck_125: We fixed him like this: When we...

    THE DEBATE, round 1

The CNN analysis that I listened to on the satellite (Anderson Cooper's crew) may have been calling it a draw, but all the polls that they decided to use and talk about where showing Obama as the "winner". Only one person on that crew pointed out how the results might be skewed since most of...

Seeking advice on that first handgun or next weapon purchase? Ask AW!

I agree with statesman about 1911. I have one made by llama which I bought in 1985. Not too expensive, not too cheap. I have put plenty of rounds through this weapon over the last 20+ years. Still works like a champ. May need a new barrel soon, though...

Stupid questions about Naval Aviation (Pt 2)

In LAMPS (MK 1), we would do Alert 15's on our small boy. Bird spotted on the deck, rotors spread, all pre-start checklists completed, bird hooked to DC power. WIth the crew standing by in the hangar. We usually could be airborne in less than 10 minutes.
