To add to the dogpile....Rescue Swimmers are a small subset of all the designated Naval Aircrewmen out there. So to assume that all who wear the NAC are also Rescue Swimmers is a gross generalization.

The perennial Navy vs AF flight school smackdown (split from the "What %" article)

Don't want to dogpile on Otto, but a similar situation caused me to fail a NATOPS check ride. The guy giving me my check was the saltiest E-6 I had ever met. He knew the airplane inside and out, crewed in H-2's in VN, and all of us NFG's were in awe of him. He didn't suffer fools either. He...

Don't Ask Don't Tell going away

True. Not letting down one's buddies is usually what drives folks to multiple tours in combat zones. BUT that bond CAN be broken (usually when somebody shows to be only looking out for themselves) and when it is, the loner had best be careful. Yes. See above.

Back when the Navy did anti-submarine warfare, OceanO info was fairly important in helping to plan sub prosecution.

    Old school aocs (1973)

Now that is the Helo Dunker I remember. A giant 55-gallon drum turned on its side. You can even see that the victims have already grabbed on to their reference points.

Do(ing) it again; Water Survival Training (API is just the beginning)

This was a big no-no when I went through RSS. Use of the appropriate disentanglement procedures was drilled and drilled. When asked why we don't just cut 'em out, the answer was "because when you cut one line, now you have two". Which, the thinking was, leads to more possible ways to get tangled up.

Flyin' back in the day when men were men and pukin' before a flight was no big deal

This stuff only happened while we were in "working" ports. It was during my time in the Helo Hole at Cubi where I learned of the time-honored Naval Aviator breakfast: Beer, Barf, and a Cigar. The alternate breakfast if you were flying that day: Coke, Smoke, and a Puke.

    Unusual Military Patches...funny and otherwise

That same summer the Connie's BG was steaming around the Gulf of Oman and some other parts of the Western Paciifc. We cut off an exercise near DG to steam north in reaction to TWA 847.

Freebie Sub to HeliOps Magazine - READ THIS

The most enjoyable aspect of flying in helos was being able to stop, backup, and take another look at the naked woman laying on the beach. The Search and Rescue stuff was fun too.

Don't Ask Don't Tell going away

Really?!? I did read the whole f**king sentence, did you? There it is right up there (I actually included the two sentences before it so as to keep the context) and I am just not seeing a point made that folks don't have a RIGHT to serve (which was MY point, in case you missed it). Care to point...

The Great, Constantly Changing Picture Gallery

Diggin' around the office I came across a few stragglers. Some early Eighties stuff: 1.) SH-2F at a fuel stop at Lemoore. Notice the A-7's in the background. Also notice the A-5... 2.) Something to make A4's day...building in the background is the then unoccupied hangars for the LAMPS MK III...

    Old Diet Pepsi commercial

OK. Two trivia questions, both Navy Helo related: 1.) What was the shortest lived helicopter squadron (Established to Disestablished)? Redesignated squadrons don't count. 2.) What was the longest lived H-2 squadron (Established to Disestablished)? Again, redesignated squadrons don't count.

    Old Diet Pepsi commercial

Your link has a nice exposition as to why Pepsi needed a promotional opportunity. But the main reason why is only briefly mentioned. The commercial allowed Top Gun to be the first movie video ever to sell for under $20 (which is close to $40 in today's dollars). Indeed the article mentioned that...

    Merry Christmas

Why would I ask that? I don't give a shit to know what you care about. My goal was to stomp on the narrow-minded, misguided, self-serving idea that Christmas is an "American" holiday. But just for the fun of the argument, what does socialism (which is a type of government/politics) have to do...

    Merry Christmas

Really?!? Try visiting Great Britain, Germany, Hungary, or the Czech Republic during Christmastime and see if you still believe that. It is probably safe to say that most of our "American" Christmas traditions come from other countries. And before anybody asks, yes, I have been to all of these...

Heavy Metal (of the rotary kind)

D models. You gotta read the book about the planning/events for this SAR effort. Lots of things done right, just a couple more things done wrong. I was surprised to learn that the pentagon started planning that rescue the day after those folks were taken hostage. Took 'em a year to work it up...

    Survival Gear and Preparation...

OK. So the water temp under 60 thing had to have been a Squadron SOP in my day. I never liked flying with a wet suit on underneath the bag. I felt spring-loaded.
  43. HeloBubba

    Survival Gear and Preparation...

As alluded to in these posts, isn't there an SOP that states when to don some manner of cold-water protective gear? I remember in the RAG and Fleet briefing rooms, a big circle around the reported ocean temp. When it dipped below 60 degrees, it was mandatory wet suit/dry suit (your choice) time...

    No more helo hoist

What those of you who think you can do it for "real" without a practice run, will be surprised by the noise of your rescuing helo. You will also be surprised at how much rotor wash induced salt water spray hurts your eyes and face. It is very hard to even open your eyes to see the horse collar...

    Is 17 kids enough?

You edited this on me. I was going to respond to your original comment that what would have more teeth legally is that this is a "private club" of sorts...and they can discriminate all day long...within reason of course ;) But your current quote above takes the wind out of that sail...:icon_tong

    Is 17 kids enough?

Even though it is a choice, isn't religion one of the protected classes as it pertains to discrimination lawsuits? Just like gender and ethnicity?

    Need some laptop suggestions

The first question I usually ask is what is your budget? Then the simplest advice is to buy as much laptop as your budget allows. You know, buy as much RAM/CPU/HDD as you can afford. As far as makes, in my professional career I have had the fewest problems with Toshibas and HP/Compaqs.
