    Benefits, Pay, and Saving

For those of you interested in what you can expect to make as you work you way up the ranks, check this out: http://www.military.com/Resources/ResourcesContent/0,13964,30821--0,00.html It's also got a really good BAH chart

    OCS pay question

You're right, it doesn't make any sense. Then again, the Navy takes a 3 letter word (car), and turns it into a 3 letter acronym (POV) that takes longer to say. Go figure.

    OCS pay question

Let's not kid ourselves. That BAS was never meant to cover food. It doesn't increase with rank, nor does it go up if you have dependents, unlike BAH. What cracks me us is how you get per diem when you're TAD, abut you have to pay for that food underway.

Here's a tip, don't put anything identifiable about yourself on your profile. Don't be a moron like futureblueangel and put "future top gun" as your occupation.

    When to show up

I wouldn't make sure that your shoelaces are inboard over outboard, because that just shows you've been talking to people on this forum or had some gouge beforehand. They really hate that.

    BDCP EXCEPTANCE

Mudboger, It defintely matters what you're applying for. The Navy isn't just looking to commission 500 officers this fiscal year or something like that. If you're looking to do Oceanography, you have a good shot, because it's not one of the communities that recruiters push.

    OCS Sit-ups

Even though you're allowed to rest in both positions, try your damnest not to rest in the down position. one, you waste time that you could be doing situps, and two, it kills your momentum.

    Aviation Maintenance Duty Officer/Supply ???

Marti, A graduate degree is not a requirement for O-5, but is highly recommended for O-6. Most of the officers get it on their own time, as there are only 6 PG school slots available per fiscal year. If you can grab one of those slots, by all means, do it. But don't hold your breath...

    Any LASIK info out there?

dokeman, Yes, my avatar is the nittany lion shrine...muck fichigan! Anyway, Neo, I don't think getting PRK after having lasik is going to solve anything. First, your vision is already corrected, and the flap has been made. reshaping the outside of your eye after it has been reshaped under...

    Aviation Maintenance Duty Officer/Supply ???

Marti, Yes, you have to be a complete bag of sh*t to not get promoted in the AMDO community. Also, orders are picked out of OCS, and timing/luck is everything. For example, there were 2 AMDOs in my class, and there were only 2 billets. VS-33, and AIMD Stennis. So getting a VP squadron is...

    Any LASIK info out there?

snizo's right. The navy is ultra-conservative about it's procedures. However, I've heard that although the Navy doesn't offer the LASIK procedure, it has a test group going. The reason LASIK is the preferred method in the civilian world is because the recovery time is amazing. You can drive...

    BDCP and EOD

A little of both. If you have two people with the exact same qualifications, the person who applied first will get it. In fact, I think that's the way it is for all slots. Why else do you think surface nuke fills up years in advance for that Fiscal year, and subs are still open?
  19. Thisguy

    BDCP and EOD

Another reason to get right on it is because EOD is a small community, you want to grab one of those slots for your fiscal year (depending on when you're set to graduate).

True, but off base is whole different story. I'm sure the sub guys here in point loma (san diego) have a much better time on the weekends then the guys up in Groton, CT.

    Should I redesignate?

cmdrxizor, Funny you should mention that, because I'm applying for a lateral transfer myself. How hard it is to transfer really depends on the community and if they're taking anybody. From what I have been told, you are generally not at a disadvantage, because your ENS and JG years you're...

    Nuclear Pipeline towards NUPOC

No it doesn't, but good luck trying to screen for the interview with a non-techical degree and just one year physics/one year calc if you're off the street. Those bare minimum requirements are there so that ROTC and Academy guys can screen regardless of major.
  27. Thisguy

    Should I redesignate?

cmdrxizor, There shouldn't be any mixed signals. As an NR Engineer, at the four year point you will basically have 3 options: Stay at NR as a civilian engineer, get out of the navy, or transfer to another community (you can go on to nuclear power school and go sub/surface). It's not that...

    And.....It's off

A little insight: If you're first choice is a large community, and your second choice is a smaller one, beware. If it seems like it's taking a long time, you probably didn't get your first choice. They forward your package to the next community without telling you that you were rejected...

Did that guy who fell off the treadmill get up and act like nothing happened, hoping that no one noticed? Don't you hate that when you stub your toe and stumble?
  31. Thisguy

    Should I redesignate?

cmdrxizor, I'm comparing it to the other OIS fields. I also spoke to my recruiter about Nuke instructor, and that's kind of how he explained it. The fact that you can't make a career out of being an NR Engineer as a Naval Officer is what should have tipped you off. OIS stands for officer...

    Aviation Maintenance Duty Officer/Supply ???

Marti, Here goes: The sea/shore rotation is usually 3 year sea tour, 3 year shore tour, 3 year sea tour, then you put on LCDR. After making O-4, you'll do a 3 year shore tour, a 2 year sea tour, then a 3 year shore and go up for O-5. Shore duty billets at the JO ranks are AIMD or Training...

    SATs and NROTC Question!

The question Ecks seems to be asking is if its okay to APPLY to both, not be in both. I would say you could probably apply to both, but if you say, got into ROTC, you'd probably have to tell your recruiter that you're not going into BDCP.
  34. Thisguy

    Should I redesignate?

cmdrxizor, OIS may be tempting, but the reason you'd go there as an NR Engineer is because you'll only be an officer in the navy in rank and pay, not in duty. If that makes any sense. NR is not like a restricted line such as Intel or crypto, which you still have to go to OCS for. The...

    Aviator sunglasses

I don't know a bout any specific deals, but if you go to your friendly neighborhood exchange, you can usually find pretty good deals on Oakleys, plus there's no tax. bdcp commitment

There's a reserve commitment period. For instance, I have a 4 year active duty obligation, and a 4 year reserve obligation, for a total of 8 years. If I get out after four years, I owe four years in the reserves, but it's not that big a deal, because I can go inactive reserve, and not really...

    What's the application process like?

You don't really need to prepare or anything. Just have an idea as to what you're interested in. If you're going Nuke, you'll find out if you screened to interview, and if you sucessfully pass the interview, they tell you right there and you're in. The wait can really vary. If you apply to...

    Question about being a RIO

Even if you did get RIO for the Tomcat, you'd probably only get one tour and given the option of transition or leave. That's the way it is with S-3s, another platform that is going away. I know of someone who just got f-14s, but rjack, you're probably right, odds are not in favor.

    BDCP to USNA?

Daiglemort, Let's put it this way. While it's admirable that you desire to go the academy, four years from now, would you rather be a LT with your NFO wings flying in a squadron, or would you rather be an ensign waiting to class up at API. Choice is yours I suppose.
  41. Thisguy

    BDCP to USNA?

Well, this might clear things up. No one "transfers" to USNA. everyone starts from Plebe year. It's not ROTC where you can join in the middle. Second, are you even old enough to go to OCS? Who the heck was your recruiter? I Coulda sworn 19 is the min age for OCS, but I could be wrong...

    biographical section of astb

what they look for is leadership and risktakers. Don't lie, but realize that Naval aviation is dangerous so they ask questions like: In the past six months have you: Argued with a stranger? Driven your car recklessly for fun? jumped from a high place? Hedge your bets toward the riskier...

    Tips on Navy OCS???

Creamer, You can't officially DOR until after your 4th week. What that means is that's when they begin to process you out. It's possible to DOR prior to that, but all that means is that they'll roll you into GTX until you do your time.

    Nuclear Pipeline towards NUPOC

yep, NUPOC stands for Nuclear Propulsion Officer Candidate. You don't need to take the OAR if you are NUPOC. To screen for the DC interview, you basically need a technical degree (Biology, Physic, Chem, any ENG degree) and a GPA of 3.0 basically shoes you in, I know of people with 2.8 that got...

    USNA vs.NROTC vs.USCGA

Here's some food for thought: I know you would think that Academy guys are more dedicated to the Navy and are more likely to make a career out of it, but that isn't necessarily the case. A lot of guys in our squadron seem to be bitter, and fed up with the navy...and rightfully so, they've...

    Too Late to Join NROTC?

PhatFarmer, I don't know which route will "guarantee" you an SNA slot, but there are ups and downs to both. If you do NROTC, you won't have student loans when you graduate, but if you don't get SNA, you may be stuck with some URL designation you don't necessarily want. Another thing, since...

    calculus based physics?

I didn't do ROTC, so I don't know about what other classes you'll have to take, but I know the Navy wants its ROTC students to take a year of Calc and calc-based physics regardless of major, so that all midshipmen (ROTC or Academy) are qualified for the Nuclear Programs when it comes to service...
