    Random OCS questions

Let me clarify, attrited is when they kick you out of OCS. Some people DOR, but hey, that's their decision. To give you an idea, of our graduating class of 54, only 37 were original members. The others rolled in from previous classes, we had one person roll back, and we had a few people DOR...

    Random OCS questions

The only redesignation I'm aware of is SNA to SNFO. However, if they navy has a slot to fill and you're qualified, you might be able t o slide in there. If injured, you will be rolled into GTX. Not a place you want to be, so avoid injury by showing up in shape. It's pretty hard to get...

    Calc and Physics

Jung, I think one year of physics is required for nuke. Seeing how you majored in math, taking Physics: Mechanics, Electricity & Magnetism shouldn't be to tough. The only part that would suck is the time it takes. Since you're a teacher, why not knock one out over the summer? Those are...

    Calc and Physics

Let's put it this way: Don't be so concerned over your GPA that you take something lame like college algebra instead of calculus. Sure, an A in college algebra will help your GPA more than a B in Calc would, but people aren't stupid. They actually LOOK at your transcripts.

    Swim test at OCS

TBS is The Basic school, all Marine Officers go through this. Navy OCS has the 3rd class swim test. It involves dropping from a 10 foot platform and swimming to the edge of the pool. Swim 50 yards, using any stroke. Dead man float for 5 minutes (lie prone, lift your head to breath...

There isn't anything you need in particular. One of our pilots was a wildlife biology major in college. However, you can't go wrong taking calc and calc based phyics, even if your major doesn't require it. You probably need to take gen ed math and science, so why not challenge yourself...

Took ASTB on 02/23/04, What do last 2 scores mean?

Jung, The main reason Nuc is easier is because it's a larger, unrestricted line community. Also, it's very different than the other communites. For SNA, SNFO, Intel, Crypto, you submit your package, cross your fingers, and hear back either yay or nay. With Nuke, you submit your package...

NROTC: TEXAS A&M OR UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS

Wearing a uniform for 4 years apparently doesn't have that much of an effect. Especially if you're wearing that special midshipman uniform that you'll never wear in the fleet. Last cruise I ran into a lot of academy guys who didn't know how to wear their rank insignia on the long sleeve wash...

I don't know about hanging from a chin-up bar, that sounds kind of nuts. However, if you're going to try anything, try yoga. I read an article a few years back about a female beach volleyball player who trained in the offseason with yoga and grew an inch. She went from 5'11" to 6'0". Take it...

    Can My Wife Accompany Me?

our squadron AI said that it's a PCS. The school is 5-6 months long, and the big thing is that you find out where you're going during intel school. My school was TAD because I knew during the 9th week of OCS what my permanent duty station was, and my orders had me TAD to AMDO school.

Do SNA's Have to live in th BOQ at Whiting?

We were down in the transit rooms, which were basically a one bedroom apt. You walked in, there was the living room/kitchen, and a bedroom. However, since we were only there for 10 weeks, we had 2 TVs, a mini-stereo and all that good stuff. I think you're responsible for setting up your own...

    Switching designators?

You might want to try hammering it out with your recruiter. If you really don't want to be an NFO, work it out now, one of our guys...

    Switching designators?

EOD - Explosive Ordance Disposal It doesn't hurt to ask your class officer, but in general, you need a reason like being NPQ'd. Changing your mind is a very crappy reason, you should have thought about that before you signed the papers. What's your designator anyway?

    Switching designators?

I doubt that. My class officer said "if you're looking to redesignate, you can't." We had some people who were NPQ'd for SNA, and were redesignated to SNFO. That's about it. Letting people redesignate at OCS would wreak havoc on their quotas. However, if say, a small community like EOD had...

A word of advice on AMDO wanting math/physics majors, they say that, but it is not a technical designator. I have a BS in Mechanical Engineering, and I don't know why they want people with technical degrees in this community. The reason intel and crypto are so selective is because of their...

    costs per hour

Well, knowing what I know, cost per flight hour is defined as 7B funds (fuel money) divided by flight hours. Ask your MCO to see a 15-day report when you get to a squadron, you'll see what I mean.
  45. Thisguy

    costs per hour

I think you hit the nail right on the head. One of our birds that diverted had to be refueled and the receipt was outrageous. It was something like 2.20 a gallon. As for maintenance though, we don't figure that into the cost per hour, I think the huge discrepancy on the gas price is enough.
  46. Thisguy

    costs per hour

By cost per hour, are you referring to how much fuel is used per hour, and how much the fuel costs? Right now JP-5 is 93 cents a gallon, and an S-3B Viking operates at around $400/hr. Unless training planes are gas guzzlers or there's another cost associated with flight, those numbers look high.
