What I've heard is that there's an allowable variation on the course from 2.8 to 3.2 miles; so naturally OCS goes with the maximum. Incidentally, .2 seems to be about as long as the first baby lap.
I had a preship of 23:36, the rain and mud and jostling bumped my initial PFT to a 24:01 (yay...
Started new thread so as not to hijack this one:

Field Accession Board; what can you guys tell me about them? Seems like a handful of people (3-7 or so) get selected every year, mostly O-2's. How competitive is it and what do they look...
I don't think the Marines would be too keen on spending a few million on 3 years of flight training only to have him do only one tour.
Needs of the Corps.... anything's possible. I wouldn't count on it. I have heard of a guy going Infantry->Aviation as an officer, but that was long enough ago...
Yup. Sitting there at medical. Looks like you got a stress fracture, son.
How long'll it take before I can take the (stability)boot off?
We'll see, but it typically takes 4-6 weeks to heal(this was week 7)
This candidate only has three weeks remaining at OCS, ma'm.
We'll see...
I know the Royal Marines use the 47 on their LHD's and love them; and the altitude performance came in handy in Afghanistan - the 47's were sometimes the only helo that could manage adecent payload in the mountains.

Are these the new classrooms? Don't see much room for a rifle and alice pack. I'm sure the staff will find a way, though.
Hmm, just to toss in my own experience, I only needed MEPS + cyclo for my PLC package to be selected. Now that I'm applying for OCC, I'll need to have a flight physical done before my package goes out.
Well, they were on my feet... :icon_smil
We had plenty of opportunity during in-processing to sort our gear, and all the stuff i took to OCS (like socks and gatorade) i took out of my civvie bag and tossed with my large/small bag issue. You can bring stuff to help and lots of people do...
Yes, you will. They're hard on you, but they don't want you to unnecessarily get hurt, either. My advice, buy two pair so you can have one in your go-fasters and another in your boots so you don't have to switch them as often. You don't often switch boots in midday, but you usually do PT in...
matt, are you sure about the paycheck deduction? By my rough estimate no such thing happened, though I never got a look at my LES. Priors who were supposed to bring uniforms had to purchase out of pocket for any items they failed to bring (and I hear it's the same at Seniors).
to teperng:
1) I would start running in boots. It'll strengthen your legs and feet - the extra few ounces on your feet make a big difference, and would reduce your risk to injury if you're already acclimated to the additional weight. If you want to get a pair of issue boots to train in and...
according to the FY2005 AVPLAN(public document, but I don't remember the original link for it), there are...(major airframes only, minor ones(training and HMX-1) excluded)

"This candidate..err.. I'll have a coke"
Or at least that's what I thought steve was referring to (candidates talking abt themselves in the third person).
Primarily, yes, but Boeing got a deal to subcontract part of the job as a consolation prize (and to keep them in the military jet biz). Apparently Boeing was responsible for the gun.
With the three major US aerospace companies buying/merging everyone, they all have a piece of pretty much...
Each firewatch had assigned duties - the first two shifts to fill canteens for the morning, the last two to swab the head, and the rest to cycle laundry. We formed little study groups, but there's not much you can do to help out another candidate write an essay without running into an integrity...
I suppose it depends on the OSO. From February - May we had a 2nd Lt on PTAD at my OSO. He ended up coming in pretty much everyday, but part of that was because both OSA's were leaving and we were a bit shortstaffed in the office. He came in and worked out with the candidates, answered the...
Fair enough, you're right. I should have said some. I believe that from a layman's point of view "oncoming wind" and "relative wind" are synonymous, but the former is by no means proper or precise terminology.
I remember being very frustrated at how vaguely both the (official) prep material...
It's possible to overthink these answers. On a very basic level, all these answers are "correct." "Correct" enough for the exam, anyway. I know there was one question on the ASTB that was technically wrong, but correct if you considered NO2 to be a fuel (without giving too much away about the...
Not to toot my own horn, but I put together a comprehensive(IMHO) guide:
http://www.columbia.edu/~mmx1/astb/
It links the Marine gouge, the Mechanical Comprehension gouge, the online version of the peterson's book, the online FAA handbook, and one of the boating sites recommended here...
Passed my first PFT in late April after five months of prep; got selected in early May with a 238. Not terribly unusual (the lateness, not my score; my PFT raised more than a few eyebrows at OCS), there were a few candidates who didn't get selected until the very last board, just weeks before...
A few notes from a 10-weeker:
Ten weeks is a long time, and there's hardly any downtime to heal, so whatever chronic injuries you have, get them taken care of, and ease off your workout schedule the week before you ship to reduce the risk of injury.
The 10-weekers were allowed to DOR prior...
Yea, they played that **** with us this summer, too. No talking for 15 minutes after lights, nobody out of their racks until an hour after. Then we had the gung-ho billet holders that'd wake everyone up at 0400 to check their gear. I tried to sleep out that first hour, but usually ended up...
A lot depends on your Company and Platoon Staff. My combined platoon got 4-5 hours at the beginning, closer to 6 as we hit the halfway mark, just because people figured out what **** they had to do, and got fewer essays to write. I know our entire company was permitted out of our racks an hour...
The acceptable form from this summer was one of the following three:
-both hands in armpits
-both hands on triceps
-one hand on tricep, one in armpit
with no space between the arms and the chest.
hands on elbows, like i initially did them, are not allowed, and your partner is not allowed...
Take that motrin with chow, too. It's tough because often you'll have PT before chow. Just know that if you do decide to go the motrin on an empty stomach route, push water before PT, not during, or you'll start upchucking, and they'll think you're a heat case.
I speak from experience.
My take on it is that you shouldn't think of education as another checkbox on your resume, but something to help you be a better officer and improve your performance.
To quote The Marine Officer's Guide:
"The professional officer continually seeks education and increased levels of...
Went there ~2, absolutely nothing going on.
Watched the relays at the Intrepid, man those sailors can run. Whipped the two Marine teams, and the SEAL teams did pretty poorly.
Ah, yes, I agree. There's nothing up front, but the money will come after you graduate OCS. There's two programs, CTAP and FAP. Consensus is that CTAP isn't worth it in the long run, FAP is basically free money (unless you decline your commission). Search the site for details.
No signing bonus for officers. Part of the expectation is that you're financially responsible and can take care of matters on your own. I've had to spend several hundred bucks for orthotics and to get my teeth fixed (fill a cavity for $150?!? - this is what happens when you don't have...
Supposed to be Friday, 12-6 in Bryant Park. Weather hasn't been agreeable and the flyover was cancelled I believe. Don't expect the rain to daunt the Marines, though.
What's supposed to happen at Marine Day? Never went before.
Took these on the USS Kennedy today. Toured the Porter, as well; I'll go back tommorow for the Shrevport and Marine Day in Bryant Park. Atmosphere is much sudued from the last time I went to fleet week, 7 or 8 years ago, and the tour was much shorter (I remember actually getting to walk about...
