    1 in 10 !?

To the OP.... I love you man. Just what we needed. So much to say but most of it has been covered. Do you think General Powell got to be a Four Star General by being the non-conformist, know it all? Or did he do it by hard work and proving his merit by jumping through those "rings of fire"...

    9/11/2001 What were you doing?

Fresh LTJG in the VS squadron in Jacksonville. I was the assistant urinalysis officer administering a random pee test. My wife called to ask WTF was going on in NY. We all went into the ready room and watched the rest unfold. Hasty AOM around noon & the squadron was on to the GW the next...

Best and worst experiences with flight instructors

Worst experience I had as an instructor? I had to fail a kid on his NATOPS check. Twice. In one week. I should never have been scheduled for the second check, but I was the only NATOPS check pilot for that Lot aircraft. I thought long & hard after that second flight to make sure I gave him...

    Transition to FTS

Here is a link to the remaining statistics on the NPC website. Looks like they stopped breaking it out by community after the FY08 boards, so not much of a statistical sample. Is it just me or has NPC been taking a lot of good info (like this) off the website?

When I was going through the police academy in 1997, we were taught that it was the breathalyzer at the station that you couldn't refuse without an automatic suspension. The field breath test is merely a tool, of equal weight to any other field test, that the officer would use to determine...

Helolumpy is right, the V-22 is an 80% answer for a COD replacement. It was considered and rejected in the previous AoA, but will be considered again. The parameters are a bit different this time, so we will see how it goes. The V-22 CAN do much of what the COD does today. It's that 20% that...

The S-3 has been discussed several times because they have a huge amount of life left and quite a few are in a "ready" status in the desert. I'm talking nearly 11,000 hours of life and lots of traps remaining. The CPH for the Viking was one of the lowest in the airwing too. To bring the...

BzB, The US-3 would offer much what Hal mentioned - increased range & speed. The cargo capacity of the US-3 would be much less & the pax ability is nil. The paradrop mission couldn't be done by the US-3 either. The Viking is a great jet and was awesome to fly - I would love to fly it again -...

That is the rub. Pax change the equation. Do the contact Helo's do pax transfers? Honest question, I don't know the answer. The problem for CODs is that when one breaks on deployment, you just lost 50% of your assets. The ship generally wants 2 hits a day. In a lot of theaters, that means a...

Your right, anything can be done with enough money. But we are not flush with money these days. I say a new airframe because these are not FAA certificated and any contract aircraft would have to be. I don't think getting them certificated today would be realistic or possible. The FAA would...

    Civilian Maritime Tailhook Aviation

A few years ago the Navy wanted to contract out the COD maint. The end conclusion was that it would not be a fiscally sound choice. The COD community operates very lean and has proven to be efficient. I think a commercial operator would not be able to provide what a CVN demands. For many...

Where is the incentive or cost savings to commercializing the COD service? I know how much a COD detachment costs & I'm not sure a private entity could do it cheaper. There also isn't a civil aircraft capable of replacing the COD making the startup expense very high for a bidder.

The Viking has two pylons that can have racks for up to 3 weapons & a bomb bay for 4 more. Capacity varied by load. It can carry MK-82, 83, 84, Harpoon, SLAM-ER, Maverick, mines, MK-48's & Rockeye. Of course a buddy store & drop tank was much more common. Who cares about buoys?
