The Good, The Bad and The Stupid...

Honestly, I think the devil is in the details on this. Obviously I do not know any details other than what is in the story, but I think that 2 prior events in his history is a significant factor along with 96'. All Navy Demo teams have a lower limit of between 200' & 400'. The Blue Angels are...

    Hawkeyes!

Nope, it's survival of the fittest at that point. I am thinking that they don't get them because they do not have the training to use it and it could potentially cause more harm than good. Oh and I'm sure money had something to do with it too. :D By money I mean, that is a lot of...

Yup, we have them. The shallow water training for it at swim phys is a blast too. (Mucho sarcasm intended).

    Cecil Field vs. Oceana

I lived and flew out Jax for nearly 4 years and now I'm doing both from Norfolk. I would kill to go back to Jax. Just about every reason possible would explain why I want to go there. Cheaper cost of living, better real estate market/selection, better wx, less congested airspace than Norfolk...

    Enterprise grounded

WAVY News 10 has learned the USS Enterprise was involved in an incident Sunday in Hampton Roads which rendered it dead in the water. Navy officials say the ship was pulling out of the Northrop Grumman Newport News shipyard Sunday and came too close to a sand bar as the tugs were turning it...

    Tipsy Gypsy Leather Patches

I guess I lucked out, I got my patches in a scant 8 months back in 2001/02. Just the name tag and squadron patch. I'll post a pic later on. I don't know what to do now that I've changed communities, I'll be d@mned if I'm going to yank a great patch off my leather jacket, but I should update...

Why it's good to be in Naval Aviation

RTB from the boat at dusk, following the coast at 500'. No need to even talk, just watch the scenery. Being in Fallon and having the CO tell you and 2 other JO's, go to Norfolk, meet the CV in the oparea, join their sink-ex, shoot a Harpoon, go home to Jax for the weekend and be back on...

    Cvn21-cvn78

CVN-77 is being built as we speak. It should have some of the new technology for the CVN-21 in it, but will be a traditional steam catapault ship. CVN-78 should be the one with the big changes. Keep in mind that these changes will not really be visible in a macro view, but will be in the...

    Your John Hancock

In flight school, I did not log a/c time on solo's. When I was in the S-3 RAG I logged a/c time if I was flying with an Instructor NFO up front with me (Of course I didn't log the a/c time if I was flying with an Instructor Pilot). Once in the fleet, all flights (except NATOPS checks) were a/c...

    S-3 Crashes near NAS Jax

I transitioned out of the S-3 last Nov and hope that the press got this one wrong and two of my buddies are still alive, but I fear the worst. My prayers are with them. As for the seats, when armed and in group, any front seat handle will eject all 4 seats occupied or not. There is no...

    Cvn21-cvn78

The George Bush will be CVN-77, CVN-78 is to be the CVN-21 concept. CVN-77 It is to be a transitional carrier, like the USS Ronald R Reagan (CVN-76) sort of is.

I actually get to see the USS George Bush everyday as I drive over the James River bridge. It's even starting to look like a ship. I can see the hangar bay doors, etc.

    MS Office for free?

Ok, after a bunch of research I've pretty well determined that it is an urban legend. I e-mailed the guys at infosec.navy.mil and they hear the question frequently. It's funny that 1/2 the wardroom JO's had heard this also. I guess it didn't help that the ADP guys at my last squadron did...

    MS Office for free?

Quick question for the educated ones... I have always hear that by being in the Navy I can have 4 programs on my home computer from the Navy. 1. Anti virus software 2. NavFit 3. Microsoft Office 4. PFPS I know the first 2 are true because I have them, but I was asking the ADP people...

The Great Flight Jacket Thread (wearing/buying Leather, NOMEX, WEP jackets/patches)

I'll make a semi-educated guess. My understanding is that the AF FRS just teaches the basic of flying the airplane (basic NATOPS qual), and it is in their first operational squadron where they learn tactics and qualify as a "warfighter". The Navy way is to teach the basic tactics at the FRS...

    Military Aircraft at Airshows

Later in your JO career, you may get the opportunity to fly in an air demo team for your community. I was the wingman for the 2 plane S-3 demo team in 2003 and it was awesome. We flew the demo at several major airshow and had an absolute blast. We flew at the Dayton International Air Show...

    Run ins with the law

Believe me, there is no limit, the board makes a judgement on the likelihood of you being a repeat offender. If you can give a reasonable explaination on why the person with all the tickets isn't you anymore, you'll be ok. I would have set off huge alarms with 13 tickets + other youthful...

    OCS as a summer cruise?

Wouldn't a Navy ROTC guy going to OCS obviate the need for any further ROTC since the end result of OCS is a commission? Just seems to be a dumb idea to me.

    Interservice transfers?

This was just for people in the training pipeline. Do not expect to have an opportunity like that in the future. That being said, it is also a viable option for S-3 guys during the sundown.

    Oregon Aero Zetaliners

Another good mod to get from the PR's is the CEP (Communication Ear Pieces). It's an optional mod to most helmet models. We had it in the S-3 and I still have it in the C-2. It's foamie earplugs that have mini speakers in them so you literally only hear the ics/radios. All outside noise is...

I think AA is pretty wary of the merger these days. Although the TWA merger was good for many, the timing really made it a difficult experience for AA. Most of the TWA guys are still out on furlough.

    Hawkeyes!

Training today for COD guys is only done in COD's & E-2 bubba's in E-2's. The last Group 0 I saw was being broken up for scrap w/an I-beam over at Oceana. I do second the notion that the C-2's are too few for our fleet. Hopefully in the not too distant future we will start to hear about...

    Medical question???

Snow, no big deal, it was 8+ years ago & I've been flying Navy ever since. I just hope that the HMSN figured out that the test equipment needs batteries in it to work, and if it doesn't have them, don't just fail the guy taking the test!

Ok, I don't know anything about you & Your profile doesn't allude to any previous military aviation experience, so I'll assume that you have not been associated with Military aviation before and are trying to learn. Fair enough. It's no different than going from the T-45 to an S-3 or EA6-B...

    Medical question???

Ok, before I get misunderstood and citing for an honor code violation...I am NOT advocating you to lie. If you know you have a bee sting allergy, you gotta fess up. However, If you do not KNOW that you have one, saying you do will mean that you have to come up with all the documentation from...

    Medical question???

My opinion is if it was 1 time long ago and hasn't happened when stung since then, forget about it! It will just make things more painful for you. Now, If a Doctor has given an official written diagnosis of an allergy, then that is something else.
