    Single officers with dogs

I love my dogs, I have two. But there are occasions where I have gone flying during the day, but due to mechanical asscrappery, I didn't make it home that night as intended. My wife & kids can pick up the slack when I spent the night with a broke bird (and visited pigs in space) but a single guy...

    Level D time towards ATP?

Trust the Sheppard Air gouge. 5 evenings of study (same method as the webmaster) got me a 98 on the exam. Sheppard air knows what they are doing.

    Level D time towards ATP?

In 2011, CNAF was very supportive of my effort to have an FAA Examiner fly with me for an ATP check ride. They actually said that the wanted guys/gals to use that portion of 3710 in order to justify preserving it. The FAA regional director approved it too. If only the I could have gotten the...

How Often do Naval Aviators Fly?

In theory, I could have gone to a flying tour post DH, but it would have brought any career progression to a screeching halt. Shortly after a DH tour, you are up for O-5 & Command. The board assumes you have the flying thing down and need to see a broader officer, you have to show Big Navy that...

How Often do Naval Aviators Fly?

I finished my first JO tour with ~1,500 hours. I finished my DH tour with a bit over 3,100. I did 2 full S-3 deployments and 4 COD deployments (5 months, 3 months, 2 months, & 6 months). Probably not the norm, but I like to fly & was able to stay in the cockpit for 13 years before having to...

Think this Sequester thing is real

I don't have a page reference handy, but my recollection from when I was OPSO is that 3710 (in the CCX section) stated that an aviator who requested a particular CCX would not be reimbursed/funded but an aviator who was "ordered" on a CCX would be reimbursed.

USS Guardian (MCM-5) aground on reef in Sulu Sea

Look at the bottom though, it has been worn completely away from being on the reef. You can see the ribs & stringers. The pics on SIPR are clearer, but you can see it here too.

Australia requests authority to purchase 24 more Super Hornets

The COD can takeoff from a runway up to 60K. For summer in the desert, it isn't unusual to light load the fuel (and cargo) in order to have any SEROC. This is why we often have to stop for fuel on the way to the boat Jun-Nov. The numbers are improved with the 8-blade, but you still only have...

As a counterpoint - for my current job, I have to maintain worldwide, 96 hour deploy-ability. Just the sandbox requirements alone is 24 CBT's, 3 different classroom classes, a medical & dental visit, and a trip through a deployment center for gear (all annual requirements except gear issue)...

    Mission Funded Master's Degrees

I call bullshit. Most of the lessons learned briefs aren't on the NPC website anymore, but from the LL briefs I do have: FY 07 ACSB: 59.6% of those selected for CDR Command had a masters. Of all eligible for the board, 43.7% had a masters. FY 08 ACSB: 67.4% of those selected for CDR Command...

I'm sure the Marines have this figured out already for the Osprey. The C-2 NATOPS has a large list of engines and under what conditions we can transport it (in the can, on a cart, sections, etc). When a new engine hits the fleet, they bring one to the hangar and load it into the COD to prove...

ASW without puke?! Not in my Navy!!

The Viking was very efficient at the low altitudes with turbofans. At loiter speeds, those engines don't drink so much. And turbo fans can decrease in efficiency with a lot of altitude.

The Monster COD thread (homage to the C-2A Greyhound)

The Navy bailed on the CSA. If memory serves, the Army & AF were bitching about the extra cost of making it carrier suitable, and the Navy told them to go to hell. I believe it then turned into the C-27 Spartan the AF is trying to ditch. The C-27 specs match a CODs almost to a T.

    Home Warranty Companies

I have BPG Home Warrant right now. Since April, I've had several thousand dollars of roofing and AC work done with little difficulty. The only complaint is their approval process for a repair takes longer than I would like. Overall, very happy. I've also had good luck with AHS in the past.

    E-2 Hawkeye/C-2 Greyhound

I'm a big fan of CNS/ATM and even of the 8-blade. I do not like the FPV, you lose too much else. Each pilot should find what they want displayed, and use it though. I do foresee some nuggets becoming cripples to it but with good instruction, it could be a pretty good tool for some.
