I do not know if many of you heard that they began construction the Navy's newest carrier CVN78? Here is a link i found but i wish i could find some new information regarding the "new" carrier. Anyone of you have anymore information or photos? Check this one out. http://www.nn.northropgrumman.com/cvn21/
They had an interesting model/computer simulation of it at Hook.

NavSource.org offered this U.S. Navy graphic:

"Artist’s concept of CVN-21 one of a new class of aircraft carriers. A new nuclear propulsion plant will power the next class of aircraft carriers. The new plant will require fewer operators thereby lowering life-cycle costs, and will provide increased electrical power that will be available for the demands of developing technology. Smart sensors will assist in further reducing Navy watch standing requirements and in automating damage control functions such as detecting fire and flooding situations. Flight deck redesign and a transition to an advanced aircraft recovery system (AARS) will reduce crew workload, enhance safety and reduce the costs of operating and maintaining a carrier throughout her planed 50-year life cycle. "

Still looks like another version of Steel Beach, though ... doesn't it?? Please note the Hummer(s) depicted on the "roof" ... shocking. :)

I actually get to see the USS George Bush everyday as I drive over the James River bridge. It's even starting to look like a ship. I can see the hangar bay doors, etc.

so is the CVN21 the George Bush? Saw the model and didn't see too many differences that were noticable outside...

Why enemy pilots dont sleep well

Sorry about the size, couldnt find a smaller one. ( Edit: That's why there's places like ImageShack that let you post thumbnails like above.... use it and don't post frame-breaking graphics)

Interesting to note the aircraft on deck in the picture include the F35 and X45B. Still only has 4 cats though.

I see the F35s, but I think the others are Supers? Either way, a cool looking carrier.

The other ones are Hornets, yes, but I believe he is talking about the UCAV parked next to the island.
Whatever happened to CVX, btw...?

The George Bush will be CVN-77, CVN-78 is to be the CVN-21 concept. CVN-77 It is to be a transitional carrier, like the USS Ronald R Reagan (CVN-76) sort of is.

So the next carrier will be the new design?

CVN-77 is being built as we speak. It should have some of the new technology for the CVN-21 in it, but will be a traditional steam catapault ship. CVN-78 should be the one with the big changes. Keep in mind that these changes will not really be visible in a macro view, but will be in the systems of the ship that will make things easier. Of course some of the stuff is still in development so it may not make CVN-78. The biggest factor in all of this will be budgets and the results of the QDR.
