San Diego base course worth playing? Have to go for some BS and don't want the whole trip to be shit if I can help it.
San Diego:
MILITARY COURSES:
MCAS Miramar. Nice and a local favorite.
Admiral Baker: North and South Courses. North is by far the most challenging/interesting. [Historical note: Admiral Baker Rec site is built on the old training terrain of the USMC 2nd Raider Battalion. "Edson's Raiders"?]
NAS North Island "Sea and Air" course…the military's version of Pebble Beach…much of the back nine along the beach.
PUBLIC COURSES:
Torrey Pines: what else needs to be said about a public course that hosts annual PGA events…and the US Open?
Coronado Municipal: Great venue in the bay.
Riverwalk: In Mission Valley just west of Fashion Valley Mall. Built alongside San Diego River. Lots of water.
Salt Creek in east Chula Vista. A "links-style" course…interesting and challenging.

Too many others to name…Steel Canyon, Lakeside, Google is your friend.

Sawgrass Country Club (not TPC but probably nicer but without the island hole) has offered free tee times to military folks on Labor day. I'm teeing off at 1330!

Played TPC Sawgrass and must say that was the nicest track I've ever played.

TPC Virginia Beach used to have internet only specials on Wednesday afternoons for something like $30 for the round. We used to sneak out of JFCOM to get a round in. (Of course people NOT doing work at JFCOM was probably better for the military as a whole anyways!!)

When I was at Canaveral we would take early Fridays and drive 45 minutes to Orlando and play the PGA course at Disney called Magnolia is only $50 for active duty with 5 days advance notice. It was the best well run course I have been to. Never saw another group the whole time on the course. Touch screens in the cart for ordering whatever your heart could desire and it was brought to you right away.

Still golfing my way around Monterey. But Black Creek is 36 dollars for military and has nice views of the bay. Pacific Grove course is not bad either with several great views of the ocean. Still saving up my 450 greens fee for Pebble Beach.

Will be in SD tomorrow, will have my clubs and may play the sea and air, or whatever, if I have time. If I play I'll report back with conditions.
