    Europe under extreme duress

Ahh okay. Interestingly, the chart though uses a tryzub (trident) roundel for Ukraine I see. I Googled and the Ukrainian roundel comes up as the one on the Blackhawk, so maybe they changed it?

    Europe under extreme duress

I understand that, my point was why put the "bullseye" on the engine? Or if putting it there, why not like a Ukrainian flag shape? That dot just looks like a way of saying to the enemy, "Aim here."

    Europe under extreme duress

This is about a year old, but since the U.S. won't sell any Black Hawks to Ukraine, they crowd funded via the Internet and went and bought a privately-owned one: It is an older model one, built in 1980, but then modified for civilian use by the private firm, and now owned by the Ukrainians...

Alaska Airlines 737 MAX 9 Decompression

Riding on abandoned lines or lines you get special permission to I think is fine, but restricted areas, that's not right.

Slight tangent, not meaning to derail the thread, but I am a huge fan of steam locomotives and have been reading a lot about them. Don't know if any of y'all are interested, but since some of you say you like trains, there is a hobby called Live Steam, basically scale model versions of real...

Yes, I forgot about the merger but that also was part of it. The great irony is that the best way to increase shareholder value and profits is to focus on the long term, i.e. make a solid product, and the profits will follow. But Wall Street gets addicted to its quarterly share price increases.

    Europe under extreme duress

So Russia apparently is starting to get desperate for vehicles. They have been producing some improvised infantry fighting vehicles consisting of older tanks with the turrets missing for troops to ride in, and now apparently ordering thousands of these from a Chinese company: As you probably...

    The Perpetual MEGA Space Thread

Yep, but this time the rocket didn't explode and made it to orbit. It spent an hour in orbit performing tests, such as refiring the rocket engines and opening the payload door. They then steered it into reentering the atmosphere but lost contact with it and so it likely burned up. But I'd say...

Alaska Airlines 737 MAX 9 Decompression

I watched a documentary that said basically the problem is that back during the 20th century, Boeing had very little to virtually no competition in the big passenger aircraft, so the culture was dominated by the engineers who would build world-class planes. But then as Airbus and other...

Alaska Airlines 737 MAX 9 Decompression

I saw one Tiktok video of the cabin where the girl says to a fellow passenger, "I thought we were gonna die," to which the other girl responds, "Me too." It probably happened so fast that it "would" have panicked a lot of people but then people quickly realized the plane wasn't crashing or...

    Nose Wheel Popping Off Airplane

🤡🤡🤡Yes yes, I should have been more clear. I thought if he meant for loosening, "by hand" he meant use a cheater or breaker bar, and then you could use the impact gun to quickly unscrew them.

NEWS Tesla Autopilot and similar automated driving systems get poor rating from prominent safety group

I've always thought that autopilots right now ought to be a feature that only activates in the event of the driver falling asleep or becoming incapacitated, in which it would then say turn on the flashers and seek to pull the vehicle over or into a parking lot somewhere.
  15. R

    Nose Wheel Popping Off Airplane

To be clear, when you say start the lug nuts by hand, you mean for loosening or tightening? (I am assuming you mean for when putting them back on, start them by hand).

    Random Griz Aviation Musings

He says the airfield is rarely used and is used frequently by snowmobilers, and that the Army should not have parked it on the trail. He also sued the airfield's owner for allowing both snowmobilers to use the airfield and the Army. Seems more like it would be the airfield owner's fault, I mean...

nittany03, anyone know where he is?

Not trying to "call him out," I honestly didn't mean it like that, so if that is how it seems, then I apologize. Was just curious is all. But I do see your point about a DM.

    Netflix recommendations?

So I went and watched that assassin scene and have to say I don't know what the complainers are referring to. It actually looked pretty realistic as it wasn't like she was fighting Hollywood-style; she wasn't really fighting at all, just killing with a blade.

    BZ to the Ace

The Harrier was and remains one of the coolest planes ever made:) If military vehicles could talk, I'll bet there'd be some jealousy going, the F-18s and F-35s not liking the Harrier getting to shoot down the enemy drones, and the Abrams tanks not liking that those lowly Bradley's got to go to...

    Netflix recommendations?

I've heard some say they think they "woke-i-fied" it some, like having a maid try to assassinate the guy and she apparently has a bunch of special fighting skills that let her fight through multiple men when in the original series, it was a samurai or something? Also that the women are made much...

NEWS Is the pivot to China a bunch of bullshit?

Wouldn't that be redundant? I mean if it's a train wreck, doesn't that imply it is already derailed? :) Also this is kind of ironic to me as I was just reading about an actual derailment, the Montparnasse train derailment of 1895. Interestingly, the locomotive itself suffered very little actual...

NEWS Is the pivot to China a bunch of bullshit?

The problem is that as you basically said earlier, "significantly" is arbitrary. What one side says is significantly raising taxes or cutting spending, the other side will argue is not.
  34. R

NEWS Is the pivot to China a bunch of bullshit?

Of course what constitutes excessive taxation can be vague, but that doesn't mean it isn't a real thing. And yes your link says that, but that is one organization. There are other organizations that will claim the opposite. They all claim they're "non-partisan" which is usually nonsense.
  35. R

NEWS Is the pivot to China a bunch of bullshit?

That's why I said excessively, not just in general. Like if we raise the top individual income tax to 43%, that might not hurt anything. But if we raise it up to 95%, that likely would be very bad. As for research, it kinda depends on who you ask and can get into some really nitty-gritty debate...

NEWS Is the pivot to China a bunch of bullshit?

What makes you think increasing taxes or decreasing spending will inhibit growth? Also that is kind of contradictory, no? "We are spending way too much, it is unsustainable." "We cannot reduce spending as it will hurt growth." Excessively raising taxes will harm growth, but where that limit is...

NEWS Is the pivot to China a bunch of bullshit?

The debt is very much an issue I'd say and remember there is a difference between creating money versus creating wealth. That said, I do not see the debt as a bomb about to detonate.
  39. R

NEWS Is the pivot to China a bunch of bullshit?

A few things about our debt: 1) The cost to service the debt versus our GDP ratio isn't so much the issue as the cost to service the debt versus the revenues to the Treasury. One of the criteria used in grading a nation's bonds is how much of the money going to the government must be spent on...

    Norks' New Strategy?

    Norks' New Strategy?

Yes, my point was that just because a nation may not seem able to take care of a simple need doesn't mean that they do not still have serious technical capability for weapons production.
  44. R

    Norks' New Strategy?

Much/most of it was crappy, but it was still capable of destroying Western equipment, that is why we had to develop systems like the Apache and the Abrams, and their nuclear missiles were capable of reaching us. Remember also the old cliche born out by history: Never Underestimate Your Opponent

    Norks' New Strategy?

Part of this is due to help from China. I don't know how electrical generation capability relates to nuclear weapon capability in...

    Norks' New Strategy?

With the Germans in WWII, it was more than hope IMO. They also saw themselves as facing down the great "evil" of global Jewry. There was a major ideological component to the war with the Nazi ideology. They also believed they could steam roll the Soviets.

Couldn't it be said that Russia's invading Ukraine was very rational given Putin's thinking they would be a pushover?
