    Pull Up/Chin Up method

I can get about 28-30 with palms in, around 23-25 palms out. Of course I only weigh 165 so I'm sure that helps a bit. Once you can get 10+ its time to start strapping extra weight to your waist.

    OCC Contract

Yes, I've heard of guys originally contracting as ground and then switching over. Thats not to say that its easy however. But it sounds like you have no other choice. If you sincerely feel that being a Marine is the priority, and you should, then sign the contract and worry about switching over...

    OCC Boards?

As our friend from Tombstone mentioned, 28:00 is not the minimum for the run. To be competitive I'd say aim for a 21:00.

Israel to Receive F-35s According to The Daily Star, the IAF will indeed be flying the F-35. The article states "[A] senior Israeli government source said that under the defense package, the United States agreed to sell the Jewish state the new generation F-35 fighter jet." Granted the...

    Devildog Scores

You're ASTB is great. When I scored an 8/8/8 67 my OSO started referring guys to me for tips and such before they took the test. So nothing for you to to worry about there. I was selected for OCC-196 as an SNA, but I also scored a 292 on the PFT. Get that PT score up and you'll have no...
  17. BarrettRC8

    Occ196

PFT is solid from what I've seen. Not something that will set you apart, but not something that will keep you from being selected either. Apparently anything 280+ has been said to be competitive for OCC so I think you're right on the cusp. I hear the boards pay particular attention to the run...

Dropping Army ROTC contract for Marine Air Contract?

I was a contracted, on scholarship, Army ROTC cadet and I got out after attending LDAC and doing rather well (read #3 in Regiment). It was extremely difficult and took over a year for the paper work to finally go through but I was eventually released and am leaving for OCC-196 with an air slot...

    Goddamn... now THAT is impressive.
  25. BarrettRC8

    Occ196

I don't know if there were other SNA candidates from my OSO's office whose packets were being reviewed while mine was. From my understanding, a 275+, with a heavy emphasis on doing well in the run, is important for guys looking to go to OCC. Get that run down. How many miles a week are you...

    Working out with Army ROTC?

If you end up pursuing this, try to work out with Ranger Challenge. They really are the only group that does a decent job at pting.

    October 2007 OCS time line...

Your bf's stats differ from mine only in that he was 3 seconds slower in the run and my OSO said my packet was very strong as well, so I can see why you might be concerned. Perhaps it has to do with the fact that 196 has been moved from OCT to SEP?
  30. BarrettRC8

    October 2007 OCS time line...

I've heard that a strong, in your case excellent, run time will help a great deal in one's selection. Any tips for someone who is running 3 minutes slower than yourself?

    OCC Boards?

Haha, I'm assuming you're referring to me Trev? I can only hope that I'll be a 300 Pt'er when Sept/Oct (?) comes around. My run time was a 19:20 last time it was tested ultimately leaving me with a 292. I've been working very hard trying to whittle it down, but I believe I'm flirting with...

    OCC Boards?

Weighted pull-ups are definitely the way to succeed. My approach, which follows, has allowed me to achieve 30+ pull-ups. My first four sets I use a 45-lb plate, typically doing 12-14 reps, then 10, 8, 7. I then switch to no weight for four additional max-rep sets. Then I'll do four...

    October 2007 OCS time line...

Ok, so it appears that OCC-196 has indeed been changed. This leads me to a question and if someone could lend some input it'd be greatly appreciated. Had it started in Oct as originally planned, that would've given graduates a couple weeks after to go home for the holidays before heading to...

    Running Shoes

I had a pair of Kayano XIIs and they worked out fairly well for me. I had heard good things about the Trance 6, Brook's competitor to Asics shoe, so I ordered a pair about 2 weeks ago. I won't go back. The Trance series will be my new shoe of choice. Plus they look cooler :icon_tong

    Army LTC

I attended LTC during the summer of 2004. Its a month long course that is geared towards individuals seeking to become MSIIIs in Army ROTC who have not been in the program beforehand. In short, it allows you to complete ROTC in 2 years as opposed to the 3/4. Despite Skidz comments, I thought it...

    iPod is totally worth it

Thats what I use. I added the Otterbox to prevent losing my second iPod to sweat... the first was the $300 iPod video :o I hear it allows you to swim with your iPod if you have water-proof earbuds but I've yet to try it.
  41. BarrettRC8

    Running Shoes

Echoing the sentiments of everyone else, don't skimp on running shoes. Asics and Brooks are by far the best out there and will make a considerable difference in performance and more importantly, injury prevention. If you don't want to go to a specialty running shop, which I suggest, then at...

    the ole hammy

I'm assuming you pulled it while chasing down a ball or while running the bases? First, you need to lay off the sprints, at least for right now. A compression bandage and ice will ease the pain/possibly aid in healing, but you need to make sure you allow it adequate time to heal and start...

Monster Marine OCS thread: stupid questions answered here!

I'm an OCC-196 Air guy as well and my girlfriend of a year and a half and I ended up separating earlier this year for largely those same reasons. It'll get better, just give it some time. Keep busy, spend time with friends, etc... Just keep in mind what lies at the end of the difficult road that...

    ASTB Standard Scores

As the above-poster stated, the Marine Corps uses it as a pass/fail from my understanding so you should be good. If you're going for OCC as opposed to PLC, I think its more competitive so I'd try to get your run down a minute or so.

    RoCAF F-5F crash

I saw countless F5s taking off and landing everyday when I was stationed at Kwanju for CTLT. The funny thing was watching the guys who got payed to sit next to the runway under their umbrellas with airguns shooting the birds that decided to land in the vicinity.
  47. BarrettRC8

    iPod is totally worth it

Agreed. I had a video iPod and the armband case. A 12 mile run and some sweat later and I was out a bit of water and a $300 ipod. My shuffle on the other hand, has yet to fail me.

    Pull up Improvement

Do you mind me asking what times you were putting up for the 3-mile run prior to leaving for OCS? Also, once there did they put you in groups according to your run times, or were you running as a platoon? I leave in Oct. for 196 and am just trying to gauge what to expect.

    Plantar Fasciitis

I had come to the conclusion that my shoes were likely the culprit. I alternate between a good pair of Asics and a pair of Brooks, and they're still pretty comfortable and didn't look like they had gotten past that critical break-down point, but I'm sure both probably have a few hundred miles on...

    Plantar Fasciitis

Thanks, thats what I was looking for. I've never had this issue before so I wasn't sure what to expect as I've read some pretty extreme stories about the plantar fascia, in extreme cases, tearing completely with continued training.
