Flying for Navy, Marines or Air Force?

Congratulations on your graduation. First of all, I would like to reinforce to you that your primary duties in either branch would be to be an officer. Secondly, it will be difficult in either branch to make it there, and you should not choose your branch based on this factor. Consider...

    Mmm Mmm Galley food

Nope. As hungry as I was on average, everything tasted pretty good, to me. You'll get in trouble for using the salt anyway. ;) My favorite was french toast days--no syrup required.

Where to live off-base in P-cola

We've got a roommate moving out in a week or two to JAX for P-3's, have a house out the back gate about 10 mins. For your consideration: http://pensacola.craigslist.org/roo/1203886214.html

Hey fellas, OUSOONER inbound to PCola with questions

Also, I might add that I have a roommate leaving for JAX here in the near(ish) future, we live out the back gate just north of Big Lagoon State Park in a fairly nice neighborhood. If you're interested, PM me and we can coordinate some kind of tour if your timeline coincides with ours.

    Former VP Speech

Cool. But, why wouldn't you call it torture? And why not? That is, how do you define it then? This is what I'm trying to peg down.
  9. red_ryder

    Former VP Speech

Not if you apply conductive jelly to the electrodes, first... but is waterboarding torture? Of course it is. Just because it's not prying off someone's fingernails with pliers doesn't mean it's not also extremely unpleasant. You don't have to maim someone to torture them. That being said...

Fired up 13 year old looking to join ranks of USMC Pilots

Went to college at UIUC, myself. BSA would be a good deal, you learn a lot of neat useful stuff and you meet other Eagle Scouts later on in life and it helps. Don't join the CAP unless you really want to; it's totally not necessary for what you want to do. No matter if you want to go to...

Not past the MEPS physical, that's what it's there for. You could go to your own doctor ad nauseum to see if he could find anything wrong with you, but the bottom line is... if NAMI whammies you, it whammies you. Most people get through fine and if not you can always try to get a waiver.

    Insider Scoop on Navy OCS

Any insight to what Flight training is like in Pensacola

lol, wow. well, I do have some advice, first of all, it's probably not a good idea to tell your superiors to shut their mouths and speak when spoken to; I would think as a prior you would know this. In any case you'll learn in OCS. This isn't a completely anonymous forum, and besides, it's a...

Oh yeah, marine ocs threads always get me. Still, the principle is the same. Press.

    Mindset for OCS

The anticipation is always the worst part. Just get ready otherwise, and try not to worry, you'll be fine. As for running, I only had about 11:40 going in...out PFT was 8:54. It sucks, but probably not as much as you're fearing. Again, you'll be fine.
  20. red_ryder

Your chances are....(penalty box for those who can't help asking about their chances)

I had a similar package, and no prior flight time besides, and I got picked up. (For NFO but not Pilot, if it makes a difference?) I'd say your chances are pretty good.

    Study ahead for primary?

Naw, dude, naw... Relax and enjoy yourself while you still can. What you could do though, is get yourself an AIM, and put that sucker on the back of your toilet. Flip that sucker open to a random page when you have some time to kill and learn yourself a few things, now that's good gouge.
  22. red_ryder

    Which is better? ASTB score

I would say the second looks obviously better anyway, but... The scores are based on relative percentiles on a bell curve, so a 6 is a significant deviation over a 5.

    Second Methacholine Challenge Test?

If you don't have no-kidding-asthma, don't worry about it. It's not any kind of "challenge" where it makes it harder to breathe. You just breath in a tube for awhile and take deep breaths. No sweat.

    IFS/NFO's

I might disagree with some of you. As an SNFO, I have found IFS to be a most helpful experience in every phase of training so far, including up to VNAV's. It is far from a waste of time for SNFO's, and IIRC it wasn't a cake walk either. I'd rather you not "crank up the heat" any more...
  26. red_ryder

IFS...how much does your performance matter?

Yeah, it's really important. IFS has been the single most helpful thing up until this point, and I'm in intermediate. It's designed for people with no flight time, and you shouldn't have a big problem getting through if you work hard, but if you really have the money to blow a couple hours...

    We're Deadbeats!

IMHO, the UN is a handy distraction that gives the illusion that all the little guys have a valid way to bitch at us. Otherwise, they'd be faced with the huge, terrifying truth that...they can't do anything. I say we keep it. It gives them a good outlet and keeps them "off the streets".

When will I start getting ENS pay?

well, you are supposed to bring a few hundred bones of spending money with you. Also, all your uniform gear you buy on credit with the uniform shop, and pay at the end. If you're smart, you also sign up for the military star card and get 10% off on that bill, pay it off thereafter, and keep...

Officer Aptitude Rating (OAR): This score is affected by performance on the first three subtests, Math Skills, Reading Comprehension, and Mechanical Comprehension. I think you may not have to take all the sections if you're not a 13XX designator. At a minimum, the ones listed above.
