Iran Detains 10 U.S. Navy Personnel

These guys were Coastal Riverine Squadron aka RIVRON, part of Navy Expeditionary Combat Command. SBT and SWCC are different and belong to NSW. I won't speculate as to what training they attend except to say it's probably different.

    Jets v Helos

Edit: Just realized @Rugby_Guy is a Marine. My advice is Navy centric, but not sure if it makes much difference. My Marine bros from flight school seem to be gone just as much.

    Jets v Helos

The question has been asked here a lot, but my .02 is that every community is going to have you gone from home a lot during sea duty. And, when you are home, you're going to be busy studying or preparing for your upgrading flights. Once you've got your quals, you'll be working in a harder...

    NSW Standardizing on Glock 19

My understanding is HSC(exp) was plussed up in size from HC to take on the OAMCM and ASU roles on the LCS as part of the "Helo Master Plan". Then LCS was late, now truncated, and the OAMCM kit is at least partially dead.

I'm pretty sure the last Sierra came off the line last year. Last I heard there were a dozen or so sitting in preservation in San Diego though. Or maybe you mean (smartly) making some squadrons smaller now that their mission doesn't exist?

The Great Flight Jacket Thread (wearing/buying Leather, NOMEX, WEP jackets/patches)

@ChuckMK23 Yup, but it comes out of 7F, so outfitting an entire squadron is a big outlay. I've heard of groundswells to make it an issued item at the FRS since the fleet is getting the CMU-37/38s, but that would have to come from CNAF's money. I'm doubtful it will become a thing.

There's also the long tail of engineering resources at navair for what is/was a one off airframe in the -H. Not a reason that cannot be overcome, but something the Navy thinks about.

What happens if you don't pass flight school?

Back in 2010, they were offering to let anyone in A-Pool walk to the IRR, no questions asked, no payback for school if you were a Boat School or ROTC grad. I know a few that took it and ran, mostly of the Boat School type.

JFC. Dude, I appreciate you want to contribute here as an applicant, but that's not adding much. I work a couple hundred yards from HSC-84. I know what "the plan" is, but it still doesn't make any sense.

Does taking ROTC orders kill chance for O4 or selection for redes?

I can't imagine VQ being that different from helos or VP. You're not going to get "good" orders (community jobs, flying job, good deal disassociated job) that keep you in the community if you're doing the ROTC gig. It's an unofficial kiss of death, and no hardship boat tour is going to "get you...

NEWS LCS buy reduced, funding moved to other programs.

To my mind, we if we want US presence operations off a neutral to friendly nation, that's a great mission for a JHSV with a single helicopter. Show the flag, do some partner ops and training, no worries. I still can't figure out what LCS is for. It's not a ASW Frigate ala the OHP Class...

PEP tour in Germany—Worth a shot, or just a pipe dream?

I don't believe they're posted anywhere officially anymore. When you get to your fleet squadron, your XO can ask the detailer for the list of upcoming PEP tours (they should be listed with a fill date to line up with your PRD), and can word the request so as to hide you from the detailer. As...

NDAA FY2016 Changes to Military Retirement

Arguing about which part of the Federal Budget we think is less deserving than our benefits is probably the least productive thing we can do here. Politicians did what they always do when it's budget crunch time, look for an area they can trim for the least amount of political pain. People are...

NDAA FY2016 Changes to Military Retirement

It's cool to see that we can cut benefits because they're getting expensive, since no one besides MOAA will really complain to the people making the decisions. But if a gold plated acquisition program goes over, we can throw money at that!

Do you mean French borders, EU borders, or what? The people of the EU were resoundly for the Schengen Area being made. Putting up an angry fence with guards and land mines is what North Korea does. I'd argue "Screw them, keep em out" is a overly simplistic view. You don't get the economic...

What Pickle said. If you're married before OCS you'll get BAH while you're there, plus guaranteed follow on orders to Whiting. Oh, and if something bad happens, she'll be at least partially cared for. The Navy gives zero fucks about girlfriends. You don't have to tell family.

If you have a choice, don't live in Norfolk unless there's something significant pulling you here (local family or something). Rental prices are still high (O-3 BAH is 1900ish) and cost of living is also high, for no reason. Cost of buying a house isn't much of a factor if you're here on...
