    CH-53K ground tests

This is Sikorsky's bread and butter, so it'd have to be redundant. I believe the -60M has a "fly by wire tail" to eliminate the cable linkages and prove the concept. Maybe @RobLyman has some insight as to how it works. Google failed me in finding a system description.

    First move and many more

I was where you were a few years back. Wife (then girlfriend) and I were both gainfully employed pre-Navy, but not married. We left a lot of stuff at parent's places and grabbed it once I got to a fleet squadron and knew I wasn't moving for a few years. I'd plan on living lean during flight...

    Navy CSAR det gets rescue

The squadrons on the carrier are built to send a detachment to support missions off the carrier and be fully capable if the need arises. We all want to be relevant in the work being done. RLSO hit it on the head though. Our bosses are loathe to let us off the boat because that means they're...

    Navy CSAR det gets rescue

The unit capable and nearest is going to get the call in most situations. In Lybia, had that been a CVN and not a MEU working off the coast, probably would've been a Navy package to pickup the Strike Eagle crew member. The nature of what we've been doing since "leaving" Iraq in ~2010 hasn't...

Another nail in the coffin of Old-School Naval Avaition..

Can you search message traffic in Outlook from last year? It'll be in there. I'd just search for "Airboss" since he usually signs his traffic with "Airboss Sends".

    Navy CSAR det gets rescue

Isn't the point here a good story and datapoint to the endless "We never do that, it's stupid" vs "Of course we'll never do it if we're never given the chance" crowds? Sure, not the craziest mission, but still. Good on these guys for being on the watch when they were needed.

Another nail in the coffin of Old-School Naval Avaition..

In all seriousness, I believe there was a message from the Airboss last year to all CNAF units that authorized it. Basically colored Ts are good on base as organizational clothing, at the discretion of the Unit Commander.

Custom Painted Flight Jacket: This is what one looks like.

MCPS is the Fleece layers/Goretex combo system. There are a couple different black fleeces, the green over fleece, and the Goretex jacket. All the 1990s technology you could want! The Massif soft shells have largely replaced the green fleece and Goretex. Mucho more better.

    Hot new helicopter/rotorcraft news

It's all good. Needing to do a full auto to the deck is a reality in a single engine helo if your only engine cuts. The -57 engine is pretty reliable, but it's still 1960s vintage with all mechanical control and little redundancy. There were a few cases of that failing, and also some...

    Hot new helicopter/rotorcraft news

Totally a fair argument that has to be weighed. I think the other argument that I missed, but @Randy Daytona made, was that the option packages the Navy wants might dictate buying a medium IFR twin.

    Hot new helicopter/rotorcraft news

I think there's value in getting to something that does OEI procedures earlier in the training track. How much value? Great question. Is it fundamental to flying a fleet helicopter? Yes. Essential to learn early? Maybe.
  20. SynixMan

    Hot new helicopter/rotorcraft news

@hscs I think a medium twin would approximate what we're train to do far better than a Single VFR. Any actual helicopter would do better than a sim for those. Night form, low light, in the mountains, to a DVE zone is probably one of the hardest things we do. A tough night behind the boat is...

    Hot new helicopter/rotorcraft news

I still believe helo students need to to ramp higher quicker, and a single engine VFR helo plus sims for the hard parts (form, NVDs, boats) won't help them get there, even if it's "cost effective".

    NVGs at the boat?

I think most folks posting here are in vehement agreement, which is refreshing. On the note of flying at the black hole of the DDG spot, that's something we talk about a lot in DLQ briefs. .5-.2 DME looks very similar and you need to be putting in a decelerating attitude when the boat looks...

    NVGs at the boat?

@Randy Daytona All those stories ended up with happy endings, but the point remains that people need to get out of their comfort zone and take some small "risks" to learn. I say "risks" because it's just stuff they might not have done recently (like actual IMC or night without goggles) or ever...

    NVGs at the boat?

Agree 100% Like I said, it's a contingency you might not foresee, and especially when you get away from home plate. Some of my best learning experiences have come from flying away from home guard or the boat.

    NVGs at the boat?

I'm preaching to the choir here, but you never know what stupidity might happen outside of home guard 2.5s. Lots of times you don't bring them on a simple day thing that goes sideways. CCX ferry to AUTEC/Fallon/whatever? Get delayed in that second stop for a partially broken aircraft in your...

    NVGs at the boat?

(Nothing specifically to you, just a general thing I notice with HS/HSC) I agree 95% of the time NVGs are better than not, but everyone should try unaided at times in a semi controlled environment to stay proficient. Same/same for purposely doing an instrument hop into the clouds. I recently...

    NVGs at the boat?

NVDs are pretty standard around the HSC fleet. Most SOPs mandate you bring them anytime you're flying within one hour of sunset. The FRS has an unaided night FAM, but pretty much everything else at night is aided, which mirrors what you see in a fleet squadron. If anything, I've had to talk...

USN Cluster F*ck Naming of COD Replacement -

It's going to be very interesting for VRC to adjust to a new concept of operations. Once the CVN gets the hang of doing these, I could totally see them turning you around inside a cycle ala a Helo with a fuel pump, offload, onload, launch back to the beach. I'd imagine you won't need all the...
