One thing about AAFES, they have (had?) seriously good deals on Omega watches. Well below MSRP, no haggling, no tax.

    Chow Hall Procedures

Section leader is random. You'll do it a few times or more, depending on a lot of things. I liked doing it because I knew I (probably) wouldn't fuck it away and get my class beat. Don't nuke this. I know you think you're "Preparing for OCS", but nothing can prepare you for chow hall...

    Marine F-22s

Isn't think the better question to ask is when the Corps is going to get on the UAV (UAS? Or what is the Air Force calling them these days?) This article raises salient points, but the Corps hitched their wagon to the F-35B and they're in it for the long haul. I have to imagine...

The Great, Constantly Changing Picture Gallery

I gotta say, EMALS is some pretty sci-fi level shit. Can't wait till we have battle fleets with lasers and rail guns. That is, unless Congress cuts the knees out for those research programs and we have to start over again in 10 years.

Another nail in the coffin of Old-School Naval Avaition..

As KMAC said, if the non flight suit uniforms were of higher quality/more comfortable than the polyester crap we get, I'd want to wear them more often. Form fitting poly-wool that doesn't come in many size options isn't my idea of a great garment. The uniform regs don't say anything about your...

    Which watch?

Okay, so Bremont is really going to town on these custom aviator watches. They did a USN TPS School One ( http://www.bremont.com/limited_ALT1-Z.php ), the U-2 (for Huggy's guys), and now a C-17 job for the RAF folks that looks positively awesome.. I think it's worth revisiting this topic. EDIT...

Military Leave in the Navy during flight school

In the TRACOM, don't plan on much beyond Thanksgiving and Christmas/New Years. You may get a good deal between API/Primary, Primary/Advanced, and Advanced/RAG, but it's always timing dependent. You're there for training. For perspective, I asked for a day off to get married and they...

Personally hate it, but I'll caveat that with the fact that I'd shop at Whole Foods if I could. I have tons of gripes with quality of produce, meats, and selection. I can forgive a lot of that if the hours were better and I didn't have to dodge the baggers after checkout. I'm sure they make...

You don't need AP Calc (unless it's a specific school thing) concurrent to take the Physcis C. Will it help? Sure. But most of it is advanced algerbra with some easy integrals/derivations. I took it while the C while in PreCalc. No big deal.

FRDMM ONE RNAV ARRIVAL Washington National

EATNA TUNNA SDWCH with a Missed Approach Holding of MAYYO (or something along those line) is a Sherman Field RNAV. And there are Disney ones (Mickey, Goofy, etc) around Orlando. One of the INAV instructors at TW4 had a list of funny ones, but I can't remember too many.

    AP Physics

Stick with AP Physics. I took it as a Junior in HS as well and it was pretty difficult. The teacher challenged us a lot but you will pick it up. Obviously a A in AP is better than a B or C, but you're showing that you are challenging yourself. The slackers taking easy classes aren't, and...

    MIDN Trip to Pcola/Jax

If things were really old school, you'd take him out to the Squadron Bar after showing him around, then to the OClub to get beers with the XO/CO and shoot dice. Now he can look tour the VT spaces, see Sherman/North Field, then go home. Just go to the beach and enjoy what little no...

What would you take as you evacuate?

Just my jump bag and the 9mm. Sold the long gun recently to someone who'd actually use it. In Hurricane territory here in PCola, I'm more worried about being only able to take a backpack as we HURREVAC in a -57. That and I live on the first floor of my apt building, albeit at 200' MSL.

^^ While I agree, it worked for him, as he's rocking Hercs now. Primary is just as much learning to fly as learning how to learn how to fly, if that makes any sense. The initial push of Primary was a struggle for me. The second time in Advanced, I've been better at weeding through the BS and...

Finish college, don't sell yourself short now. Next, if you want to fly in the Navy, go to OCS. You'll never know until you apply and go to the boards. How does graduation work?

Best to wait until he gives you the okay to make plans. It will be shorter notice, but lots of things can happen that could cause him to move a week (or more) in graduation. As he gets farther in training there, he will have more freedom to call you and make plans. Generally, families arrive...

    Visitors and Holidays at OCS

My advice: Don't bring anyone to Nimitz on Sundays. Just get through those 8 weeks (or whatever) until you get off base liberty or leave for the holidays, then you'll get to see family. Do the phone calls on Sunday, letters when you can. Stay focused on spending the minimal amount of time in...

    Advice for the newly betrothed

I walked down the "Planning a wedding during flight school" path for exactly 4 weeks before I had to put the kibosh on it. She was "going to plan everything so it didn't stress me out". No such thing, and she's a pretty low maintenance woman. You're going to have thoughts about colors...

    no more manuals

I already use mine as a study and brief aide with PDFs of 3710, NATOPS, gouge, plus aviation WX through apps. Most instructors think it's pretty cool. Not sure if it's ready for primetime cockpit use, but I've heard of folks doing so. Hopefully it gets support.
