121 Die in Greek Air Crash after co-pilot found slumped on controls and no pilot

I've heard the same thing, only about commercial airliners in general. In addition to the Gimli Glider in 1983, there was an Airbus A330 that ran out of fuel over the Atlantic en route to Lisbon, Portugal - Air TransAt Flight 236 on August 24, 2001. They glided the plane to a landing at...

    PRK while active duty

Back before I had PRK, my recruiter said that I could go NFO and that my vision wouldn't really matter as long as it was corrected to 20/20...I'm glad I had the PRK.

    SNA spring 08 package

Like Kyntryboy said, time is on your side. I wouldn't try to hide NROTC, but show it in the best possible light. Otherwise, it could really go either way for you. Your scores and GPA are average, so there will be better candidates out there, but there will also be worse ones. Timing is...

121 Die in Greek Air Crash after co-pilot found slumped on controls and no pilot

Well now that that's over, yahoo news is reporting that investigators found the bodies "frozen solid". They must have been unpressurized for some time - sounds very similar to the Payne Stewart crash. I'm not an accident investigator, but I play one on TV...

121 Die in Greek Air Crash after co-pilot found slumped on controls and no pilot

From what I understand about commercial airliner supplemental oxygen systems for passengers, they are typically sodium chlorate candles that use a chemical reaction to produce oxygen. They don't last very long (no more than 12 minutes on average) and as such they are strictly a "get me down"...

Does time at school on BDCP count?

My recruiter also said that BDCP time counts toward time in service (i.e. retirement).
  13. nugget81

    some questions about bdcp

Keep in mind that getting a "no" the first or second time you apply doesn't mean that you should give up. Keep applying until they accept you for the community and program you want. Also, take a look at NROTC and BDCP, and decide which one will work better for you. You can apply for both...
  14. nugget81

    some questions about bdcp

Luckily you are asking questions early. You can only be in BDCP for a maximum of 24 months (36 for technical degrees). As such, you have some time before you would be eligible to apply. In the meantime work hard in class, get good grades, and get involved with various organizations on campus...

    Uniform Survey In Progress

I'm glad to see that it's not ok to bash CAP. While they may not be "real military", they are the official Auxiliary of the Air Force. As such they do abide by most Air Force regulations, including those covering uniforms, courtesies and customs. As for the ages of the members, the vast...

    Pro rec question

Getting a pro rec is the hardest part of the BDCP process. If you get one, you should be pretty much in - given that you don't lie on your application or screw the pooch on PFT or EPSQ. There are many reasons why one may not get a pro rec - here's a few: 1. Navy doesn't need you for certain...

Spooky, check your PM... Mike, Thanks! I don't know who's going to swear me in. I'm in Phoenix at the moment for an internship, so I may have to get a "courtesy swear in". Although, I do have a very good friend who is a 2nd Lt in the Air Force. Anyone have any idea what the...

    Finally...

It was a "I had the luckiest timing in the world" thing. My package went in one day and the very next day my recruiter called to tell me that I was pro rec'd. You normally have 30 days to get findocs in (and I was told 6 months total from the pro rec date), but I when I went to MEPS and didn't...

Roger That! Slammer, I had some bumps to get over. I was pro rec'd in Feb, went to MEPS 2 weeks later, found out that my vision was slightly worse than 20/40, had PRK done 2 weeks after that, waited 3 more months, went back to MEPS for my eye exam, checked out 20/20, and the rest is history...

Thanks guys! I don't have an OCS date yet...I didn't even find out until today (Friday) at 5:00pm. My recruiter literally waited until the last possible moment to tell me from the July board (Monday is Aug 1) - had me going nuts thinking that something was wrong!

    OCS Eye Exam Procedure

I've found that for depth perception tests you should relax your eyes and take your time. It's kinda like looking at those Magic Eye pictures from a few years back...but I know not everyone can see those....
  30. nugget81

    Yet another question....plea.

Those scores are nothing to be worried about. I had 8/8/8 56. Also, waiting is a big part of it all. You'll have to learn to love the "hurry up and wait" lifestyle...

More bases added to BRAC? Oceana?

    management or leadership

To lead is to show the way by going in advance. (Thank you dictionary.com!) To manage to tell others where to go. I imagine that officers in the military must do both. At times you must manage and delegate to subordinates. Other times, particularly during wartime, they must lead their men.

    PRK while active duty

Time & Money... I'm not sure that you'd need 2-3 weeks. I had PRK done last March (Thursday of spring break) and was back in class the following Tuesday. I even did an altitude chamber flight the week after. After a few days your vision may not be perfect yet but you should be pretty much...

    500 yard swim

Yes that's true. Keep in mind that swimmers (swimteam) don't shave all season until the big races. That way there is less drag and they should be able to top their best times from earlier in the season. My personal opinion - you wouldn't catch me shaving my legs for a PFT swim. I doubt it...

    500 yard swim

I guess you could think it that way. But I prefer to swim in pools, not football fields, and most pools are 25 yards, so figure 10 laps. It's summertime, and the only way to get good at something is to practice, practice, practice...

    Taking the ASTB

If you can, I would recommend taking the electronic version of the test. You have a timer on the screen, you can mark questions to go back to kater (which makes them very easy to find), and you get your scores back as soon as you're done. Plus this is the age if technology, may as well start...

    nine months later...

Had mine done for 3 months now and at the last check-up my eye doc said that there was no post-PRK haze in my eyes. I've been at least 20/20 since the surgery (at least a few days after it). As for what you could do...I wish I could help but I don't know.

The New pit for my money....

All the advice above is good stuff. Get the good gear (not just the cheap crap), take a MSF course, and most of all - don't be stupid. A guy just killed himself two nights ago in town here because he flew by a cop at 100 mph and thought he could out-run him. One mile later he didn't make the...

I am a CFI and I can see a correlation between those who play aviation simulator games and those who do not. Given that there are exceptions to every rule, but the students who've played around typically know a little more in the early stages of training. Instead of "Oh WOW! Push the stick...
