Exceptions for many things....this is just one. I guess it falls under the rubric of "needs of the service/exigent circumstances". Many "Nuclear Power qualified" aviators, en route to or actually in CVN commands, don't have the time available in their career pipelines to attend a war college...

Super unlucky? I don't think so. Look at the big picture. You've been accepted into a VERY competitive program, and get a couple of more months of whatever it is you do, and maybe getting in better shape physically before you start the pressure cooker.. Enjoy what you can while you can.

To your original point, I'm assuming you're getting a degree in something related to what you want to do as a civilian. Do that. If a dream opportunity materializes, go do that instead.

Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort is crawling with Naval Aviators. Also the NROTC Unit at the University of South Carolina probably has some on staff, as would the Citadel Military College. The Naval Recruiting District that covers your area would have access to some as well, I would hope...

Not sure how they've managed to avoid the politics thing, unless you count the Royal family as politicians to be satisfied.
