    Run Time at TBS

Our SPC's idea of PT was combat water polo and bear pits. Fun stuff, if you ask me. Then again, he was a big man (wrestler and football player at USNA), so running wasn't exactly his thing.

The Great Flight Jacket Thread (wearing/buying Leather, NOMEX, WEP jackets/patches)

You mean you don't do this all the time? How else are you supposed to wear it? :D
  3. P

    API/Primary waits...

You can volunteer for stash jobs, funeral detail, and any other opportunities that pop up. You'll probably stand duty once or twice (a 24-hr duty, I was lucky enough never to have it). Otherwise, just enjoy your freetime because once you hit API, you'll be running on all cylinders. Oh, and...

The Great Flight Jacket Thread (wearing/buying Leather, NOMEX, WEP jackets/patches)

Gotcha. That just kinda seems like one of those "why issue it if we can't even wear it?"
  5. P

The Great Flight Jacket Thread (wearing/buying Leather, NOMEX, WEP jackets/patches)

Is the jacket authorized for wear with the flight suit? I didn't seen anything in the regs that says it was or was not authorized.

Rifle qual - how'd you shoot?

Yeah, double pizza boxed on Qual Day. Damn cold weather.

    Getting dropped from TBS

Yep. As long as your Platoon billet holders are locked on, then you'll be alright. Or as long as your SPC is a libo hound...we had a platoon in our company that usually secured 2-3 hours after the rest of the company.

    Getting dropped from TBS

    Who is the XO?

    Between TBS and flight school

Well, I really got paid for nothing down here in Pensacola while I was waiting. But, I did get a chance to get my gray belt and I was also on the funeral detail, which I must say was quite an experience. It was definitely humbling and I was proud to get the chance to send off some of our...

    Between TBS and flight school

Yes, you will still be getting paid - base pay and full BAH.

    Navy Federal vs. Marine Federal

I've been a huge fan of USAA. I haven't had any problems with them at all and it seems they can pretty much help you out with any and all of your financial needs.

    OCS credits

If you're talking about receiving college credits for OCS, the answer is that it depends on your school. I know the college I went to would not give me any credits (not even a P.E. credit - yes, we had to have 3 P.E. credits to graduate) for OCS.

How the Marines will affect your mentality

To be honest, I don't think I changed at all. I probably hold myself a little higher than I used to and I have a lot more self-confidence, but overall, I'm the same person I was before I went to OCS (and TBS, for that matter).

    Ribbon Bothering Me

That's because the ribbon is red and yellow.

What is a typical day at TBS like?

It's 300 miles. So you could go to NYC on the weekend if you wanted.

    Iwo Jima WW2

The movie is the film adaptation of James Bradley's "Flags of our Fathers". It's a really good read.

    Personal Weapons at TBS

You'll have to register them with PMO when you get there. You'll be briefed on that during Zero Week. I don't think it would be a big waste of time. My squad had a big collection of weapons going. All told, I think we had roughly 18 weapons among our whole squad. There will be plenty of...

    TBS weekend travel

First of all, like you said, you'd have to submit an out-of-bounds chit and get permission from your SPC and Co. Cmdr. If your request passes the "sanity check", then they'll let you go. But that all depends on what kind of training is going on, whether you'll be in the field the next week...

IFS - What should I expect?

Mike Co. office is in O'Bannon Hall. And I believe you need to have your orders stamped in the OOD shack in Heywood Hall.

    Tattoo questions

For TBS? That's not what I was led to understand. Guys in my TBS platoon didn't have to do anything with their OSO to get a tattoo. The same goes for getting a tattoo while you're at TBS.

    JTF Katrina

    So depressing :(
  22. P

    OCS pay

Actually, they didn't answer with the same thing, just added a bit more information. Nothing wrong with that, it was all good gouge.

    Latest wait time for API?

Some B Co Lts got hooked up and are classing up soon. I think that because they were actually working on projects worthwhile while they've been in the pool. For the most part though, I think March is right on. I was in Alpha Co, and my start date is 16 Dec (as of right now). It's been...

    PLC or OCC?

You're right on with this one, however, if you take the tuition money and monthly stipend, your PEBD will be your commissioning date. I found that out the hard way. That is the beauty part of PLC, though. You can be a 2ndLt at TBS and have 3-4 years of time in service. That would've been...

IFS - What should I expect?

Who is your instructor up there? And yes, some of those ATCs are pricks. There is one female though who is ALWAYS on top of her game and when the pattern gets busy, she can give out clearances and communicate without skipping a beat and without getting flustered. Some of the other ATCs will...

IFS - What should I expect?

Finish those hours as soon as you can...then get out of Quantico as soon as possible thereafter!

    Getting Married While at TBS

Hell, I think the wives knew more than we did with regards to the schedule. My married buddies would come in telling us about stuff they heard from their wives that hadn't passed to us yet. I'm sure the wives even got the daily word before we did!
  28. P

IFS - What should I expect?

You cannot start flying until you have that safety brief. No ifs, ands, or buts.

    Getting Married While at TBS

After a week in the field, I'm sure the first thing you're going to want to do is see your wife. All the married guys in my platoon got the hell out of dodge when they cut us loose after a week in the field. And if they did come out with us that night for dinner, they brought their wives.
  30. P

Sure there is...the time that you are leaving Quantico!

IFS - What should I expect?

No no, not at all. ;)
  32. P

    Saluting

Actually, nowhere in my post did I say that Marines just look at you and don't salute, thats what some of the Navy does. It's still unacceptable and calls for a correction. Why let it slide and then go talk to their SNCO when you can correct them right there. If you don't do anything about it...
  33. P

    Saluting

Oh don't worry, we have no problem "educating" them. There really isn't any problem with the Marines, just the few who keep their head down. The ones who do salute are usually pretty motivated and give out a loud, "Good morning, Sir!" to any 2ndLt. I think with the Navy, they're just that...
  34. P

    Things you should know

Not really. The only time you'll need to know them is if you're standing duty, which you won't due on PTAD (unless you've got a sadistic OSO). My buddies at TBS who stood duty as Junior Officer of the Day told me that there were some Captains who were the Officer of the Day that would grill...

  37. P

    truth to this?

And that is exactly the reason why you shouldn't have posted in the first place. Because you didn't have all the facts.
  38. P

    truth to this?

I understand that, but doing so by telling a story where you don't have all the facts is unecessary. Especially when both the Marines in question did not lose their commissions. I know we are talking about the same people because we were in the same company. Rumors went wild about that story...

    Marine surfers?

You probably won't have the time. Sure, you'll have weekends off, but you'll most likely want to use them to sleep off the week.
  40. P

    truth to this?

    That's not what I heard...
  41. P

    truth to this?

Maybe you should find out the real story to the situation before posting something that isn't true on the forums. Maybe you just shouldn't talk about it at all... There are so many different versions to that story that it makes me laugh.

Role of the Military after Katrina

And doing that would've put the NG assets right in the eye of the hurricane - worse off than they would have been had they stayed in the city. Furthermore, using hindsight, they wouldn't have been able to get back into the city. Why? Because I-10 over Lake Pontchartrain pretty much doesn't...
  43. P

Firing at us? Trying to help you?

Again, answer my question. Who is going to give somebody cash for a TV that was just stolen while they're standing in 3 feet of water? Unfortunately, the city has told police to ignore the looting. Such a disregard for the breaking of civil laws is a big part of why the police have lost...
  44. P

Firing at us? Trying to help you?

WOW. That's some pretty messed up logic, in my opinion. First of all, I never said I had a problem with looting the basic necessities - personal hygiene products, vitamins, food, etc. I would probably be doing the same thing if put in that position. The fact that you are defending the...
  45. P

Firing at us? Trying to help you?

That doesn't give people the right to go into a Wal-Mart, steal an arsenal of firearms, and start looting business, houses, and stealing TVs, DVD players, etc. People looting food, water, clothes for their kids, diapers...I can sympathize with that, I would probably be doing the same thing...
  46. P

Firing at us? Trying to help you?

Now you see what those of us from New Orleans have had to put up with for so long. Every poor person in that city expects/demands handouts. You don't sound heartless at all, I share the exact same sentiments.
  47. P

    Latest wait time for API?

For Marines, if you're SNFO, you've got priority. For an SNA w/ IFS complete, expect 2-3 month wait. W/O IFS, expect much longer. I reported 12 Aug and my start date (right now at least) is 10 November.
  48. P

Firing at us? Trying to help you?

Martial Law was declared in New Orleans yesterday.

IFS - What should I expect?

Sooo, you actually drove all the way out there even if you didn't have a flight? Hell, if the weather sucks, that's what aviationweather.gov and a telephone is for. If you don't have a flight, thats what PS2 in your room is for.

    PO boxes

I second that. I used Mail Boxes Etc. and I am so glad I did. They are extremely nice there and VERY helpful. It's more expensive than the USPS, but then again, its great to have a safe place for packages and whatnot. Definitely use them. And yes, it's still in the same spot next to...
