    Flight School backed up

What @Roger_Waveoff said. We teach VT SNAs to land from specific perch points, be they the normal pattern, the ELP, or instrument visual straight in. It eliminates a lot of variables and give them a consistent sight picture. Teaching them a visual approach where they get let loose at 10nm and...

    Flight School backed up

Tbh I think visuals are out of scope for Primary beyond a basic transition to land on a straight in instrument approach. There’s a healthy balance to where things are taught. Visuals seems like more of an advanced topic that will be platform dependent.

    Flight School backed up

They lengthened the fields they could and put a few out of use (Wolf OLF) to mitigate. Not a huge deal. The tires, eh, once you learned how to handle it and not jam on the brakes, it was fine. Also not rushing students off the runway early to the point they jammed on the brakes. As far as...

The Great Flight Jacket Thread (wearing/buying Leather, NOMEX, WEP jackets/patches)

Fair. I tried to do the same at NS Great Lakes and they could support, but couldn’t guarantee the correctness of my DD214 as they don’t do many. That was enough to scare me into Norfolk

When was that? I tried similar coming back from Bahrain, but it was an uphill battle and I ended up giving in and going through TPU Norfolk (in actuality, not bad at all. I was in and out on Terminal leave in a few days)

Sewing. Sometimes near Navy bases there will be a place people go regularly that knows how to do it well. Whoever does it needs to open up the liner. It's not something I would have a PR3 Timmy do for a few Monster energy drinks. The G1 is something you'll cherish later on, take care of it.

    Which watch?

Pelagos FXD (the blue one previously and now this) tend to be tougher to find. 10-20% off and no tax was common in 2019, unsure what the market is now. Got an Asian trip coming up so I’ll explore!

    Which watch?

Yup. I accidentally got my x-33 very wet and totally screwed the movement. Fixed 100% gratis. They’ll do battery replacements free too and fix anything necessary. Quite the good deal.

I've done the "Mail it to Swatch Group USA in New Jersey" for every one of my services and it's worked great. They do a top notch job. Only thing I've ever paid for in 12 years is a new bracelet buckle when the original's spring broke.

Sen. Schumer gas for electric car trade in program?

Most charging occurs during the evening when loads on the grid are minimal. Cooler hours and people not in offices. Some locations even have lower rates during those hours that makes charging cheaper.
  15. SynixMan

Sen. Schumer gas for electric car trade in program?

You're overthinking it. Gas and Diesel vehicles pay by the mile already in a round-about way via the gas tax. Some pay more, some less, but in general it's a usage tax. Drive more, burn more fuel, pay more taxes. Yes, EVs are a small percentage now, but the change will happen gradually over...

Sen. Schumer gas for electric car trade in program?

At some point I expect a VMT (vehicle miles traveled) at the state level with registration for EVs. No free rides. Gas taxes are regressive but they are a significant revenue source that goes directly back to road/infrastructure maintenance. I’m unsure how to get Federal Govt will recoup the...

    Marriage during the aviation pipeline

Eh, it’s funny now in retrospect. We did the Escambia courthouse wedding like many an SNA and did the ceremony a year later when I was in the fleet. Obviously as a twenty something I didn’t understand why the world didn’t revolve around me.

50/50 that guy is dating a Flight Attendant. @Brett327 Airline dependent but most give the CA leeway on PAs as long as they cover the needed points. Style/flair is optional. At Skywest we flew AA/DL/UA flights so most CAs just read the script and kept it vanilla. Now I do boxes so thankfully...

In which a TACRON CO wants some respect

Let’s not conflate TACRON with TOCRON. I’m a TOCRON SELRES and their issues are significant, but not as bad as the silly TACRON souls. I don’t think OP-T COs from VP (who were OP VP DHs, so 50/50 emotionally stunted ??‍♂️) are helping TBH. Getting choked out for Officer manning from PERS is...

    Europe under extreme duress

No. Most of what we're giving is write downs of existing stocks that will expire anyway on the shelf. Better to use an old TOW missile up against a T-80 than have it languish in storage and then be disposed of. We're also gaining significant knowledge of modern peer to peer conflict in the...

    Europe under extreme duress

There were videos of them running their Pantsir-S1 systems on the M4 highway to Moscow. I'm guessing whoever was flying for the VKS that day didn't expect to get lit up by their own top tier SHORAD. They might have even mistaken it for their own and flown right into the WEZ.

    Europe under extreme duress

Only thing that stood out to me was the number of aircraft downed by Wagner's air defenses in their push. Somewhere around 8 helicopters (including possibly two of the rare ELINT/EW variant Hip) and one IL-22 Airborne Command Post. Big yikes for giving your mercenary army modern air defense.

The SHOW: Airlines still a "good gig"??

The role of HIFR in 2023

Back when this procedure was more common (70s?), there were way more diverse classes of ships out there and not all were compatible with every aircraft. Since the ~80s when the 60B was commonplace, most ships have a deck that can support any H-60 variant. It's of variable utility though, as...

The role of HIFR in 2023

Still required for Air Capable ships qual AFAIK. Never did it for real, usual limitation is the pump's power. I only considered it in the event of fouled deck and no where else available to land.

Similarly to their SAM shortage problem (and really their entire defense industry), long term they'll need a functional Air Force that isn't reliant on prior-Soviet equipment. We've already adapted HARM, JDAM, and apparently UK ALCM for use on their MIGs. With F-35s coming online in lots of...

Getting a PHA done at a different site

Can be any reserve activity but they need to know how to enter it into the reserve side. Best to contact the local NRC where you’re doing AT and see when their medical will be on site. I did mine in Whidbey. Regular MTFs won’t be super helpful.

    Navy JTACs/FSOs

I know an HSC pilot type who did a turn through the teams as a JTAC, but it was a one-off thing. To the OP, the Navy just isn't set up to have a lot of pilots running around on the ground doing that stuff. And, as others have mentioned, the era of lots of SOF calling in lots of fires in the...

    Navy Side Flying "B-Billets"

For the NAE, realistically Placement in Millington cares about filling first tour sea billets and disassociated sea tour billets. Recently DH has been a problem for 1310s, as well as VTJ IP. Most priors are going to make it to their disassociated under their winging contract and that’s all...

    Navy Side Flying "B-Billets"

Translating the nomenclature, the navy calls "B-Billets" shore orders. Towards the end of your first fleet tour you'll go into the process of selecting orders for that tour. It's a selection process based on your FITREPS/Quals/timing. Think CNATRA IP, FRS IP, Weapons School, NAWDC, VX-1, etc...

    E-6 going away

I think the point is it's hard to man the community when there's two command billets and a handful of DHs in today's age of retention. It's not a sexy mission like the Dragon Lady, but it also has geographical constraints. Could it be done with SELRES/TAR forces? Maybe. Probably worth...

    E-6 going away

Color me skeptical we need a niche community like VQ(T) in the Navy with all the associated career track costs. Sort of like VXE-6, feels like something that could be folded into the ANG. But I'm mildly ignorant of what they do beyond stream an antenna and pass signals.
  46. SynixMan

    E-6 going away

I think this is the biggest thing. Upgrading the radar suite is probably easier than doing anything "from scratch" to replace the E-3. The KC-46 debacle probably has big USAF gun shy on a clean sheet design. This will also make an easy case for replacement of the NATO birds (side note, a...

    TSP Investment Options/Mix in 2023

Just me but I’m more aggressive on stocks for my TSP and civilian retirement accounts since I have a one (and likely two) pensions behind them as a backstop. If the plan is to get a FERS retirement, I’d argue you can accept more risk than a pure 401k retirement portfolio.
