NEWS Air Force leadership talks frankly about pilot retention

For the folks with longer time in than me, has there ever been a push to move the ADHSB to before the O4 board? Or is that a solution in search of a problem?

Gear up field trap? Wouldn't that hook drag and sliding over the wire fuck up the field gear?

NEWS Air Force leadership talks frankly about pilot retention

Absolute worst case if you were planning on getting out is getting FOSed once, picking up on your second look, missing the DH screen the first time, then picking up OP-T DH. That's four years in career limbo and then doing a DH tour that has little chance of letting you put on O5. For some...

NEWS Air Force leadership talks frankly about pilot retention

@DanMa1156 Nope, I meant crazy on the LTs part. I get the idea of trying to get paid as much while you can before you leave but you're adding 18-24 months to your Navy time in the prime of your working life in a dead end you don't want. And unless you have some kind of poison pill in your...

NEWS Air Force leadership talks frankly about pilot retention

I know many an LT who are counting on getting booted out, taking the bonus and the boat job in the process. Sheer lunacy IMO.

How does Navy determine # of IP's ?

Do SNFOs at VT-86 do some amazingly difficult training that you couldn't send non jet pilots to fly them? VNAV, INAV, Forms, basic BFM sets? I know a lot of helo types who couldn't get s flying shore tour with an EP.

Air Force Mulls Low-Cost Fighter Experiment

What @Treetop Flyer is describing is basically this: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/KAI_T-50_Golden_Eagle Which is ironically up for the T-X competition!

Stupid Questions about Naval Aviation (Part 3)

SWTP stuff was the oddball for sure, but the CAG Staffer (almost always a SWTI) would be the evaluator and that processed was blessed by the powers that be. If anything they were interesting checkrides being so far away from home. I think we had one guy do his Level 4 ride on an LFE with the de...

Stupid Questions about Naval Aviation (Part 3)

Same idea. We had Cat Is meet us on deployment. I went to air wing Fallon with one week in the squadron. We can and did mint H2Ps, HACs, Level 2/3/4s on the boat. Painful for the tactics stuff, but doable. Just a different mentality vice the EXP squadrons since we couldn't rely on a home guard.

Stupid Questions about Naval Aviation (Part 3)

Sending nuggets to the boat shortly after checkin to the squadron is very common for HSC(CVW), especially for those short CQ dets. Great way to learn the boat ropes in a low(ish) stress environment, get some Fundamental ACTC cards done, and build hours. We'd send brand new HACs as well, to build...

Stupid Questions about Naval Aviation (Part 3)

We did HARP there in 2015 and it was a good time. Again, bunch of TAD folks like drinking where they're staying. Were cool with us ordering pizzas and whatnot too. I'm sure the tips helped.

    Lasers and the Navy Pilot

@GroundPounder Reporting them as able to local law enforcement was our protocol and we had a good working relationship with LE in Hampton Roads through our Type wing. Sometimes we couldn't get a firm fix, but other times they were dumb enough to let us go right to them. Repeat "unlocatable"...

    Lasers and the Navy Pilot

We have laser eye protection for higher power Class IV stuff. No, you don't need them in flight training. I've been lased by a jackass with a laser pointer. Just waved off, made a note, and contacted the local authorities.

    AMEX Platinum

It probably depends on your travel habits. I regularly connect through ATL on Delta, so there's a SkyClub in each terminal and I take advantage. Even on a short layover, nice to grab a snack, free beer/wine/cocktail/coffee, and just be out of the terminal environment if only for a few minutes...

    Ship Photo of the Day

The modern battleship is black, goes underwater, shoots a torpedo the size of a Volvo at its sea targets, and cruise missiles at its land targets.

    Why are you Leaving?

Don't know how VFA types did, but Alert 5 in the helo on the CVN was about 2.5 hrs before we switched out. Our O-4s/O-5s would stand them if it were "real deal". Standard overnight Alert 30 off the VACAPES, less so. They'd been around the block and got that you can't ride JOs into the ground on...

F-35B/C Lightning II (Joint Strike Fighter)

Of course not. This is flag waving public negotiations similar to the Carrier situation, meant to project strength to the public. DoD had its chance to push a mix of 4.5/5th gen platforms 5-10 years ago when JSF stumbled and it didn't for a multitude of reasons. But pushing that button now...

F-35B/C Lightning II (Joint Strike Fighter)

There's certainly a case to be made for a mix of SuperDuper Hornets/Block 60 Falcons plus F-22/35 for the high end fight across the DoD.

    2017 BAH Rates Out

Two points: 1. You do not get free chow on the boat. $10/day for Officers. You get to "keep" BAS as an officer, so sort of a wash, but BAS < 30x$10, so it's a net negative. 2. There is in no way enough base housing to accommodate everyone O-3 and below at the current installations...

    V-22 escort??

As excited as HSC was to get into the armed helo game, I wouldn't be surprised if they slow rolled this system and (ironically) a chance to realistically support the trigger pullers.
  35. SynixMan

    V-22 escort??

A lot of what's being talked about is basically the -C version of Firescout. I wouldn't be surprised if DoN got bigger into that to stay relevant.

USMC 2016's API Lead Ensign is the CAOC Marine Liason Officer

Think leader of the Pre-API stash Ensigns waiting to class up. There's a viral email back in the 08/09 timeframe where one went full stupid and now the infamous "Lead Ensign".

    Future of Marine Corps

C'mon man. You're talking about the HAZE-EX of syllabus upgrading shenanigans combined with you not being let off the boat leash for more than the week. That's different than no shit everyone pitches in operations from a land det.

Any downside to becoming a Florida resident?

Disclaimer as a laymans knowledge. My inspection was $75 once and saved me ~$250/yr on my premium. Any home built today in FL has to conform to building codes and you'll instantly get credit from insurance for that. I got additional credit for hurricane shutters, roof design, window type, and...

Any downside to becoming a Florida resident?

^^ On that note too, if you have a newish home in FL, get a "Wind Mitigation Inspection" completed by a local certified home inspector. It can knock hundreds off your homeowners insurance premiums.

Any downside to becoming a Florida resident?

I think we're talking past each other here. If I was imprecise with my earlier statement about it being some kind of blanket sales tax exemption for FL military residents, mea culpa. In general, I'd agree with you, lying to your dealer to not have them collect taxes at the time of sale and no...

Any downside to becoming a Florida resident?

Good point. Was referring to single folks. If you can swing it, mucho benefits from having your spouse also being a FL resident. I lucked out and got married in advanced and did this. Being residents of the same state also qualifies your spouse for Military Spouse Residency Relief Act...
  42. SynixMan

Any downside to becoming a Florida resident?

In general I'd agree, but this is a specific FL exemption. Saved me a few thousand and is 100% legal. Details in the link I posted.
  43. SynixMan

Any downside to becoming a Florida resident?

Do it. No state income tax (or income tax return to do) for your active duty time. And when you get stationed out of state, buy a car, register it in FL, and skip out on sales tax.
