E-2D Advanced Hawkeye - Less than a year out.

I just...sigh.. 🤦🏼‍♂️ Daily ops in the CENTCOM area, where we regularly fly and sail through the SoH knowingly under the umbrella of SAM and ASCM threats is not the same as HVAAP in a near peer shooting war. The Russians lost Mainstays by flying into a SAMbush, yes, but they are not competent...

I don't think we should use Russian AEW&C operations as a window into competent war fighting ideas.

Dual Designate vs Re-designate vs Pilot Physician

Many places you can drop a lot of your schedule and turn it into a part time job if you want. EDIT: I agree though, I'm a junior WB FO and that plus reserves is way too much work/schedule variability.

The SHOW: Airlines still a "good gig"??

Don't use Clear even though I could with AMEX for free. KCM, TSA Pre, and Global Entry cover me by and large without issues. Clear seems like a solution in search of a problem.

    Is Geo-Bach possible?

Oh and BOQ/BEQ is just "NGIS" across the board now. Usually the same facilities they used to be even (like at NASP). Different ranks rate different quarters though. 🤷🏼‍♂️

    Is Geo-Bach possible?

I did hear about students geobaching in flight school, but never any Dual Mil. Usually civilian spouse who stayed near family with the kiddos. Wouldn't you both be drawing BAH, one with dependents (you as the O-1E probably) and one without? You going to the Q would forfeit your BAH. Seems...

    Which watch?

Send it to the Swatch Group USA service center in Secaucus, include a letter saying you purchased it under the military program and include a copy of the warranty cards, include your email and phone number. They'll put it in their system, service, and ship it back.

    Flight School backed up

Huh? I mean I get San Dog is nice, but hurrevacs were legit boondoggles of the highest order. "Go fly to some spot with JOPA, zero responsibility, hang out". I did two, PNS D-> KLIT 🤣 (okay okay KNSE D-> KLIT). I still have fond memories of them.

Close to wings but thinking about switching communities

Most folks I know who go to Japan love it. Many are ready to get back CONUS at the end, but it's a fun adventure. But lol at Air Force bases being great. You clearly haven't been to garden spots like Minot.

Close to wings but thinking about switching communities

To the OP, I think you’re being overly dramatic. It’s normal to wonder if you picked right, but the job has plenty of great times ahead. As @croakerfish said, transitions in flight school are very rare. You’re likely to get laughed out of the room if you ask for one based on duty station...

Hidden gem that one. If you came on the right day they were fresh frying catfish and hushpuppies. Plus a freezer full of ice cream. The Zoomies hated seeing us there. Only made it a few times as IP/IP since it was a bit too far for a student X. My other IP/IP single bag of gas faves were...

    Platform Selection E-2 vs P-8

I keep hoping Hollywood would make Red Storm Rising into a 10 part miniseries. The P-3, H-3, and H-60 ASW in there is pretty dope. Not to mention the huge Tu-22 attacks against the Carrier.

They should be managed as 1 of 1 O-4(SEL) paper and shuffled out before they can impact the DH FITREPs.

The SHOW: Airlines still a "good gig"??

In a way...? But airport infrastructure in the US was severely behind from the 1990s-2000s and has only really started correcting in the 2010s once there was profitability again and then the big infrastructure bill (which mostly helps out small/medium airports but is still important). Many...

The SHOW: Airlines still a "good gig"??

Huh? The Big 3 and SWA all print money at this point barring something like COVID. Richard Anderson made DAL a behemoth and Doug Parker is doing fine at AAL. They built the companies to weather a regular recession fine. None of them can buy enough planes to sustain their growth desires. The...

Are you using AI - and how?

LLMs are a business model are intriguing. I refuse to call it AI because I'm a pedantic jerk and they really aren't that intelligent. I think they'll increasingly be used by asshole manager types to drive out "unskilled" labor like customer service or anything in content generation. To that...

Gotta keep you on your toes with a dislike 🤣 I'm all for making helo bubbas more competitive, but it's a pretty good time to be helo pilot making the jump (2021-2023 was probably the best we will see). The SHOW: Airlines still a "good gig"??

I'm all for it. The shortage is for RJ CAs willing to work for bad pay and work rules, not at the majors, so ALPA has a point in the shortage being a mirage of a sort. The civilian barrier to entry is still high in terms of straight dollars and there's "Daddy has a plane and let me time build...

Crossing the finish line... running, walking or crawling... (Reserve Retirement Process)

Follow up. Spoke to MNCC Helpdesk (very helpful!). They said starting active duty is should start the clock on anniversary year, so it appears my record is in error. Since I'm SELRES, I need to go through the CPPA at the NRC. It should just be submitting a ticket with the documentation...

@subreservist @AllAmerican75 Sorry for the confusion. I meant October 2009, commissioned January 2010 onto active duty. I'll reach out to PERS and ask, they seem to be decent in responding.

Crossing the finish line... running, walking or crawling... (Reserve Retirement Process)

Maybe a dumb question that's in the 24 pages before, but quick ASOSH question. I started OCS in October, commissioned in January. Looks like they're counting my years from that January date. Did the days from Oct-Jan get "lost" in the points calculation?

Wondering what free time during primary looks like

Echo what others have said, you should have time to train in flight school. There will be lots of unstructured time off and then sprints like Primary Contacts where you will live at work. Once you get to the fleet, it's more 0800-1600 when not on the flight schedule (community/location...

    Disassociated Sea Tour Likelihood

Huh, I was OCONUS but was emailing my detailer asking about it in 2019 and I remember something along the lines of "The email suffices as your notice" since the MILPERSMAN was from mid-2000s.
  28. SynixMan

    Disassociated Sea Tour Likelihood

It used to be an actual letter, now I believe it's an email and then the NSIPS resignation request. As others have said, coordinate with your XO and call now. Unfortunately, you hold none of the cards here, which sucks.
  29. SynixMan

    Disassociated Sea Tour Likelihood

Unfortunately if you fall within their current rules, you'll get zero sympathy from PERS. Their #1 job is to get you to a sea duty job, regardless of your individual situations. As @DanMa1156 mentioned, once you get clarification, picking something palatable early is probably the best option.

    Which watch?

I lasted maybe 6 months using my favorite Zebra pens in the planes. I forgot half a dozen or so, and now just use hotel pens. On the plus side, the international pens are much better than the Mk1Mod0 Bic piece of shit I saw on regional layovers in South Bend or whatever.

    Navy Dedicated SAR Squadrons

I think you're thinking too literally about CSAR as one scenario. There's a big spectrum of threat levels and time space, and each service (Army, Navy, Coast Guard, Air Force, USMC) has some parts to play in the puzzle. Unfortunately, as others we've often mentioned, the HS/HC merger, HCS's...

    Navy Dedicated SAR Squadrons

Circling back to this. A couple points: -Don't go to Guam just because you want to "do SAR". Yes they do stand SAR Alert and get more rescues. However, it's an island in the pacific (good and bad, but isolating), their deployments are different, and you're (for better or worse) far away from...

    Europe under extreme duress

Also goes back to doctrine. In Soviet doctrine, artillery is/was the “king of the battlefield”. Ukraine inherited that legacy in terms of systems and some doctrine. Fun fact: I read the battle of Hostomel Airport was supported by artillery units from the Ukrainian army’s school house, and...

NEWS Tesla Autopilot and similar automated driving systems get poor rating from prominent safety group

On the TPMS front, I actually like it. My wife drives city streets to work and drives through some interesting areas. So she picks up debris often enough (including a .38 casing once!) that we usually find out via TPMS first and can get it repaired before she winds up with a flat at 8pm in the...

    Making O5 in the reserves

My string of (by choice) P FITREPS hopefully ensures my tenure at a terminal O4 in a relatively good deal reserve job. Making O5 in the reserves

Be careful what you wish for. Making O5 is potentially a worse deal since you'll be forced to get an over-grade waiver to stay flying, go to an APPLY billet as a CO/OIC and be on the hook for some of your travel, or join a large staff.

Stupid Questions about Naval Aviation (Part 3)

Granted it's been 8 years (ugh, I'm old) since I touched a -60, but my recollection of ground turns and hover vibes were they weren't magically difficult. I'm also scarred by spending 0300-0600 as an FCP doing ground turns on the boat to pass to another FCP at daylight for inflight. I think...

Put me in the camp of "Not an Ace" since drones/cruise missiles can't shoot back, but by all means paint that shit on the side of your Harrier and give my man a **DFC (knocked down to a silver star since the USMC hates awards). **Edit: Silver Star greater than a DFC apparently. FUBIJAR.

    FNAEB outcomes

No. Most of the NFO to 121 tracks I’ve seen involved civilian flight training, then part 91/135 to get to normal ATP mins. Had a VFA NFO in my Skywest indoc who did it, mostly with GI Bill and then flew king airs. I think contract ISR since he had a clearance?

    FNAEB outcomes

I’ll echo what @cfam said almost 100%. I’m assuming if it’s a FNAEB then you’re winged and in the FRS or first fleet squadron. I’ve known plenty of pilots who went through FNAEBs for not making HAC/PPC/section lead/sucking behind the boat. You’re being cagey, I guess I respect that. My...

    Hot new helicopter/rotorcraft news

I think people are underestimating the usefulness of manned platforms in ASW in particular. It’s not just a sensor platform. The unmanned sensors will give cueing, but dropping a torpedo is act of war stuff you don’t want to leave to an algorithm.

    Hot new helicopter/rotorcraft news

I think there's opportunity to move forward a generation, but as mentioned, it would need to be financed by Uncle Sam. Bell and Sikorsky put too much money into FVL that likely won't see full adoption (just my speculation), so they aren't going out on a limb without a money parachute. Any Hawk...

    Hot new helicopter/rotorcraft news

As @thump said, all the SHP increase in the world won’t get you a ton more a Sea Level. The up-engined SOAR birds needed it to work in high/hot/humid conditions we just don't see off boats. I'd love to see a S-92 variant that could fit in a DDG hangar (the big brains at Sikorsky and PMA know...
