There's an interesting story going around that the Meridian Commodore who was concerned he was going to be fired by Admiral Bull so he's the one who went to the media.

True or not, I doubt we'll ever know considering how quick and quiet Bull's "replacing" occurred.

Long time listener, first time caller.

I can say with a high level of confidence that the above rumor is not true.

The timeline and mechanics of CNATRA's CoC were most likely driven by PACFLT's review:

Neither did you.
I don't think you understood my point. A lot of the heartburn from my t-45 friends stems from things I won't go into on a public forum, but suffice it to say, at the least, they didn't think it was wise to put an NFO in charge as the chief of naval air training, where most of his job is running the training for pilots, of which he has limited understanding of what that entails compared with a single-anchor guy. That's all I was saying. Not a dig against NFOs or any of that nonsense.

Oh joboy SUMAT.
A one star has been around long enough to know EXACTLY how training works on both pipelines.

More to the point, how often has a pilot been in charge of NFO training as CNATRA, and would you say the same thing about them? How do the helo or maritime guys feel that it's a jet guy?

Lets knock off the bullshit, it really doesn't matter whether CNATRA is a 1310 or 1320- it only matters whether they're a good boss. Knowing and understanding how other parts of the machine function, and/or listening to experts in areas outside your own background is a basic part of that. Bias exists, but it should be something folks work to minimize when they manage a diverse group (IMHO). I'm fairly sure the Navy didn't select a particular CNATRA in order to bias things in favor of one crew station vs. another.

To misquote a bit of urban wisdom, "hate the player, not the game" ;)

It's easy to criticize someone's choice without knowing the full story or being in their shoes... Those are specific reasons that possibly have some physiological issues driving them instead of him being a stereotypical child attitude from someone who was jaded he didn't get what he wanted. Sounds like the guy knew he'd be miserable every day for the next 10 years of his life every time he flew... more power to him for avoiding that, cutting the military's losses, and not becoming a safety hazard to his squadron mates.

I had an onwing once who was a naturally gifted pilot.

Fast forward a year, he's in kingsville and we're having at one point, discussions several times a week about how much he's fucking miserable and wants to DOR and dreads going flying... why? He got airsickness... every flight... Turns out that besides the few active airsickness episodes he had in primary, he was passively airsick 60% of the flights in the program but sucked it up and flew because he didn't want to get attrited. He gets to T45s, and he's actively airsick, and puking every single flight. Adaptation flights were'nt helping, spin chair wasn't helping, and every flight after BIs he'd be sick...

Would a DOR in that case been a waste of money? Should he have just shut up and color?
He needs to talk with his class advisor and CO. There are options. These options have a risk, but why be miserable?!

Fairly certain that the 1310/1320 CVN Skippers out there aren't inherently qualified for that (O-6 level) command. I get that there is a pipeline of sorts for them, but commanding a bunch of SWO's and their boat stuff is pretty far outside most aviators realm of experience. Doesn't mean they can't be good at it.

Dig intended or otherwise, that is one of the most ill-informed statements to come out of you in a while (and there have been many), though I suppose we can pardon your ignorance, as you have zero experience operating in a designator-diverse environment.
