NavyOffRec,
I know my ASTB scores are not as competitive as they should be for SNA (5/7/4/49), but i think that as good as its gonna get, but do you think if i got my private pilot license before the July board it would make me competitive?

How many times have you taken the ASTB? Improving your scores is by far the best thing you can do and it won't cost you anything. A private pilot license by itself doesn't do much for your packet. Search prior flight experience, their are numerous threads about the subject.

I only taken it once, but studied my rear end off for it, i even took 3 weeks leave. i think if i did it over, i would do worse. i just figgured i would show the Navy i really want to fly and have the expriance.

The private pilot's license won't hurt you, but the amount of money and time invested in pursuing a license doesn't provide an equal return on investment. That is just my .02 cents.

Show them you really want to fly by doing better on the ASTB. It is not a hard exam, and regardless of your background/'intelligence' there is no reason for the oft repeated competitive score of 7/7/7 to be out of your reach. How about for the next month or two every time you want to log on AW or any other bullshit/social media/etc site you sit down and study for 30-60 minutes instead, retake the exam, and hopefully improve.

Or go ahead and drop 10k on a PPL which may or may not enhance your packet, and is practically guaranteed to not counter your ASTB score.

Or instead of getting the whole PPL, maybe just pick up some of the FAA publications (some of them are free online) or GLEIM books and study some of the topics like aerodynamics and general aviation knowledge from those.

I studied from believe it or not, an aviation textbook (basic flying/ ground school book). They are available in libraries. The one I picked up was a bit large, but it fully and completely covered aviation.

Also, it may not seem as important, but I believe the spatial apperception portion can make or break your score. I was just naturally good at them, but my sister (MH-60 pilot) did them ad nauseam until she was getting every single one right.

I have seen several with PPL not get selected because of scores, yours are odd, I would give it a shot with them then retake.

Take it again. The 7 on the PFAR is nice, don't worry about the FOFAR too much if you aren't applying NFO. You can get the AOR and AQR up, and probably the PFAR too. You can do it!

Also, do you remember which form you had? Form 4 is supposedly harder for some reason, it is what I got stuck with.
