Next Board ~ April 2011

I actually had enough guts to walk into the Navy Recruiting office and ask my officer recruiter to put an application for me in February 2010 when I was 29. Due to some circumstances which no one will explain my application was not seen in September 2010 or November 2010 board. I tried emailing and calling my recruiter but he has not been responsive and avoiding me, so has everyone else in the office. Since no one responded I decided to write a letter to my congressman and she called the Congressional Inquiries Branch for Navy Recruiting Command. According to them there was a problem with my application that required clarification and correction, but rest assured I will be looked at in the April Board.

After hearing that there will be a government shutdown I wrote my congressional liaison and told her, if I don't get a decision in April or I don't get a favorable decision I'll be back in her office. Yes...I am asking for an age waiver with no prior service, I am currently 30 1/2. If there will be no officer boards until October 2012 (which is fiscal year 2013 then I'll be 33 years old.

1. Please fill out your profile and don't put "stuff" and "sdfsdf." Thanks.

2. If you walked into a Navy Recruiting office the same way you just walked into here then I can understand why nobody in that office talked to you anymore. I recommend a more subtle approach in the future.

3. What designator are you applying for?

4. Just because you may actually be "seen" at the board or any board for that matter doesn't mean the Navy truly has to look at your application. They could easily just say you had some blemish and was not as good as the other applicants.

5. Good Luck you will need it!

Well, fwiw, my recruiter told me point blank today that the boards were still on. All of our sources mentioning closure say that they are no longer accepting applications, not that they are necessarily skipping April's board. Still, don't want to get anyone's hopes up. Flip a coin. It seems that might be just as accurate as anything else in figuring out what will happen.

Get that Dumb and Dumber clip ready again...

I imagine there's a lot more of these types of Jim Carrey reactions going on right now though

This is the reason (most likely) the remainder of the boards are cancelled for this FY..

Being 30 yrs old and now deciding you want to get into aviation is kind of a negative on your end. Try the AF their age limit is 29 for pilot and I think higher for navigator. Also the army has a higher age for helo pilots.. Err maybe the Coast Guard.. Maybe someone can chime in as to the ages for the rest of the branches but I hate to rain on your parade, with the age limit being 27 it's highly unlikely you will get it. I'm 26 with about 2 yrs of prior service, and I'm worried about getting/missing a so called easy waiver with this board delay... Sorry man sometimes you have to face reality on things.

Also, the boards not convening until October 2012 is a bit of a stretch. You're probably over shooting a year. They had said this FY... Not next FY too.. Maybe I missed something somewhere?

I just talked to my recruiter, he told me they wont get their new board dates until October 1st and they will know then when the next will be held.

They have waivers that are rarely granted for people with no prior service. This might be one of those rare times which is an exception. Think about, it's not your fault all this is happening and you were ready to go on time. The Navy wasn't. So don't get discouraged and I would still apply even if it is pushed back.. and you are too old.

Do you have evidence of this? The regulations don't allow for any age waivers for non-prior service.

There have been several cases in the past in which an age waiver was granted for a non-prior individual. If you look around here you will see what I'm talking about. Recently the individual needed to obtain a Pro-Rec before the waiver is considered though.

I don't know where this statement that you received from Eaglei22 came from but I don't think he meant it towards Mr. Dodge.

As Twobe mentioned.. If you scour this site you will find instances of people attaining them. Nothing like Mr. dodge is asking for but one particular one that rings a bell is: someone on here mentioned they had been selected and given a OCS date. They were fine on age, then their OCS date got pushed back and that would of effected their age and OCS. They were given a waiver for this because of the circumstances.

Just like you can apply this to the circumstances that recently just happened, all boards being closed for a year. It's not guaranteed but a possibility. Especially for those on the verge of being "too old."

Got sick of hearing conflicting things second-hand so I just called Millington. I made my way through the phone tree until I eventually found someone who seemed to be in the know and was told in no uncertain terms that all boards are off (only asked about SNA but I was under the impression this applied to all but a very few designators). Apparently some of the confusion comes from the fact they are still accepting packets but that has no bearing on board status. Apparently quotas come in for the next year in April so that is when they will start making decisions as to future boards. I was also told they found out quotas were cut significantly for FY11 which for whatever reason they didn't find out until after the November board, meaning they over selected. Of course lucky for those of us who just missed that deadline (me by 5 days) those slots will then come out of FY12/FY13 boards making them more selective.

^
I obviously can't confirm any of this but the source seemed reliable so take it for what it's worth. I just figured I'd share since the info can help those of us who are in limbo make some decisions.

What is everyone looking to do for the next year or two while we wait?

I'm graduating in May and many of my plans were based on at least being seen by a board or two. I wasn't presumptive enough to assume I'd be selected, but I still had to use quite a few resources which would have been helpful in the job hunt (including quite a few at my current employer). Everyone was very gracious but I have the subtle feeling by just signalling my intentions I burned some bridges. I also wasn't feeling great about using my contacts to get a job with the knowledge I could be off at OCS in four months. I think the lesson that can be learned is NEVER base anything off the military, just assume nothing will ever come of it and be pleasantly surprised if it does. Anyway, back to looking for a job...

Thanks for the post FlyingToaster,

Did the people at Millington give you any reason why they are still accepting applications but suspending all boards?

Just seems odd (and a disservice to recruiters) that they would still be accepting packets if they're just going to collect dust on somebody's desk.

Recruiters more or less just collect your paperwork and send it off to big Navy. That's their job and also the reason many of them don't really know all the details. That's how my recruiter explained it to me.

I just talked to my recruiter when he called me about something. I figured I would ask him the question everyone here is wondering because my friend also wanted to know. All boards are on hold indefinitely until further notice excluding NUPOC, medical, SPECOPS and a few other cases. Their command told them to still collect paper work so they can submit it when they open up again. Most of the billets for next FY have almost been filled. Hope that clears some things up for you guys. My recruiter has always given it to me straight so I believe him.
