Yeah, talked to my recruiter the other day. What a pain, the machine that grades the handwritten tests is down, so it'll be another couple of weeks. Talk about anxiety..

Alive and kicking...sort of.
So how did you do? Did you do better or worse on parts that you were worried on (and, hopefully, studied harder on)?

I'm taking it in the next two weeks sometime and feel confident about it, but I'm afraid that if I study too hard on sections that I feel weaker in (and possibly really don't need to focus on since I probably truly know it) I will lose out on some other areas that I felt confident in but didn't review one more time to cement it in. My worst fear.....

Anyways, I hope that you did well and got the score you were shooting for.

Once you start going to bed and in your sleep you are trying to do volume of a sphere problems and calculating mechanical advantage..I say you're ready and it's time to close the books.

BTW volume of a sphere is 4/3 pi r^3 :)

Have a few questions, ASTB 12/8.

Initially I was going to take it during the middle of January so I had some time to study during break, however I recently took some of the practice tests (petersons, and prep) and found I had most of the stuff down pretty well (having not studied yet). So instead I decided to have my first go in the beginning of next month, and if all else fails I can always take it again in January.

On the petersons prep test, I got 25/35 on the general (aced the reading/english stuff, but I really need to concentrate on the math over the next week or so), 25/30 on the mechanical comprehension, 33/35 on the spatial (in 10 minutes), and 24/30 on the aviation/nautical info section (also need to study the nautical stuff, I guessed correctly on quite a few, but I don't trust my luck to hold for the real thing).

btw. This is for the Marines and pilot.

Anyway here's a few question my OSO wasn't sure on.

What actually goes into the x/x/x score, like what percentage does it equate to, whats the highest possible?
Even though I aced the spatial, do you have to do them that that quick on the real thing (35 in 10min).
If you were to judge solely from the petersons results am I in good shape?
Which more closely resembles the test, the peterson, or prep test?
Does anyone else down the road look at this (during flight school, plane selection, etc.)?

go to this site and search "astb". Open the first .pdf that comes up. This will answer most of your questions. The site itself is great and will answer just about any medical, physical or academic question you have.

As far as the peterson's goes, I couldn't tell you but I bet you could find out if you looked around the site a little. From my experience, the prep test was the best possible.

Once you're accepted, noone will care how you did on your ASTB.

Good luck

That's good to hear, it was probably the biggest thing I was concerned about, my OSO insists as long as you get the 4/6/6 your all set. I don't feel I should have much of a problem at all getting to that, but if someone else was looking at it down the road I'd certainly want to do better.

You'll want to do better regardless...go to the Stats/Scores thread and you will see that your peers that you are competing against are regularly getting 6's and above in all sections. Unless you are going Marine..it's really not a "pass/fail" ..there is no "safe zone".

Even if it doesn't matter after selection...try to kick the test's ass. Look at it this way, you're competing with a bunch of smart people to get the limited slots...

ALso, I recommend getting the Barron's ASTB Prep book at Barnes & Noble or the ARCO ASTB Prep book. The gouge is out there and there is also plenty of gouge on here as well to supplement the study guides.

Good luck,

Just so you know, if you need to retake it you would have to wait 30 days from the previous test date. Also, for the reading section focus only on reading comprehension questions (answer a question about a given paragraph), none of the other stuff (definitions, incorrect words) is necessary.

For a scoring breakdown, check this file: http://navmedmpte.med.navy.mil/nomi/nami/clinical/astboverview.pdf

Check the other posts and this website also. That has pretty much everything you need to know. If you take a look at all those links and get the basic concepts down, i'd say you're in good shape. Good luck and let us know how it goes.
