Is there anything I can do around the house to substitue for running on rainy days or when I dont have the gas to get to the track?

Run in the rain. To the track. Then run 1.5 miles on the track. Then run home.

I agree. I hate running but seem to enjoy it a little more when it's raining out. Also, do things like walking lunges (unweighted at first, then add weight as it gets easier and you start to weigh less). Also, check out the Navy's PRT training website. Once you get in decent shape, you'll be able to start utilizing it.

As for focus, you need to find the motivation to do what you need to get it done. Ask yourself -- "How bad do I want this?"

Best of luck!

Or for the schizo-types like me, play the role of a DI in your head. "you're never going to make it. You're weak, nasty, dirty, and not worthy of this.", etc. ahh good times. People look at me like

Thanks for the info guys. You all have been very helpful

The only track I know of is a nature trail where I use to run but it's a 20 minute drive so no chance of running that far to get there. I think a treadmil will be my best bet. I was thinking maybe of getting a bike again too. Might be able to find a bike trail here somewhere.

I think I will get a jump rope as well. I've got plenty of room to do that in the house so I have no excuse for not being able to do that.

I think one of my biggest problems with stayin motivated is my depression. I use to take anti-depressants for a while but I stopped soon after because I wanted to beat it myself without medication.... that and the medication I was taking made me see bugs. I've gotten better but it still effects me some when it comes to self image

Also. I always feel tired and like I have no energy. Dont really know what is causing it but could it be a certain vitimin i need? I would bet if i didnt feel so sluggish everyday I would be more willing to work out.

The anti-depressants (even though you are off them) may be an issue with clearing medical.

Force yourself to work out. I am older than you, probably eat much less, and do 2-3 hours of cardio 5-6 days a week. FORCE YOURSELF.

Stop being a pussy.

30 minutes anywhere at a reasonable pace, while increasing your speed in weekly increments, can substitute for any runners' trail. It's about 3+ miles at a 10:00 minute pace. Add sprints during the run to increase your speed. I've done this for years now and have a 10:47 currently and a record of 9:50 doing this alone. Every now and then, I go to a regulation track to make sure I'm on track 1.5 mile wise, but rarely is it needed.

You will need to get off these meds for a year in order to be cleared to apply. Also, you'll need to attach a note from your doctor to your app saying you are good to go. Talk to your recruiter about it.

I learned that a big part of it is accepting that part of it, even after you drop the meds, is who you are as a person. Take ownership of your personality and learn how to thrive off it. You can have a rich life on your own terms if you try hard enough. The biggest thing you can do is to give back to others and do things at college and the community to fill in the hole. You always matter as a person, but everyone needs to see it themselves from time to time. Open yourself up to your friends, especially your longer term friends and generally make yourself feel a part of others' lives.

Man up! Do you want to be an officer or not? If so, lace up your running shoes and hit the track, otherwise stay home. Depression or not, you have to adapt a winner's mentality.

Yeah i've already been off the meds over a year so I should be clear. I really do need to man up and get off my ass to be honest. In the process now of working in a workout into my schedule but I have started doing pushups and situps in my spare time. I'm hoping once I get into a rutine I wont have to force myself as hard each day to work out.

Another thing I thought of as well about the eye surgery. Other than taking out a loan do any of you know a way to pay for it. My dad's insurance doesnt cover it and no on in my family exacally has the credit or spare cash to drop on something like this. any suggestions?

Don't let the stress and annoyance of running hinder you. I've been running for 4 years now and I hate it to death. I feel exactly as you do every time I have to do it. In fact, I have to run tonight and it is currently the low point of my day. But it doesn't bother me as it all leads to a goal worth my time and efforts. Just keep looking ahead.

I agree with this. The only runner's high I have ever felt was that which came with the relief being done for the day (well, that and the joy I get from buying new running shoes, but that's a chick thing). It is never easy or fun or enjoyable for me and the only way I keep up is to give myself a choice. It is always a choice--not one of whether to run or not run, but of whether to run or be chubby and gross. Every day when you hesitate to pull on your running shoes, ask yourself if you would prefer to not run, or to be a Naval officer. For now, you have that choice.

Hello people. I came across the BDCP a few weeks ago, by acident, after checking out the Navy's website after attending a Blue Angels airshow. It's something I'm very interested in. I've been browsing around the site for a few days and decided I should introduce myself.

The question I have is I'm going to ITT Technical Institute and I'm majoring in multimedia and game design. The problem comes in at that it's two separate degree's. The first degree (multimedia) is a 2 year degree and the 2nd degree (game design) is a four year degree. I'm only going for four years but i'm getting two degrees. Would that cause problems with applying?

I have one other question. I have really bad eye sight. Last time I was at the eye doctor he told me it was around 20/400 in each eye. I want to be a Pilot and I know that pilots are required to have 20/20. Can I apply for an aviation slot and then get the lasik when I get the military benifits or must I have that corrected before I apply?

I know that some of this would probably be easily found with the search function but I wanted to introduce myself and have something to put forth other than just a hello.

Like IrishEagle said, I'm almost positive it is impossible to select aviation until you get a waiver AFTER you get PRK or LASEK done (LASIK is a permanent DQ). If your eye sight starts out really bad uncorrected (probably 20/400 is really bad), you can't get a waiver until 6 months after the surgery.

And in addition to talking with the officer recruiter, I'd suggest that even if you do get on the PRK/LASEK track, to first have yourself checked out by a flight surgeon and run the entire plan by him to make sure you've done everything needed to be able to get a waiver at the end of this process- that's what I'm planning to do myself. It would really suck to get surgery and not get a waiver. I read a very sad story on AW of someone who had this happen to them. (They got the wrong surgery after getting some wrong medical advice and were DQ'ed from aviation forever. :()

Thanks guy. You have helped me look at this differently than I have been. I think a little music while I run should keep me from dreading running so much. My yard is big enough to run in for now. Hopefully I will find a track in a nearby town I can go to so often to work on my mile time.

thanks for the information

10 mins with a jump rope will work your heart the same as an 8 min mile.

this is an awesome idea. I bet the OP is aerobically limited anyways, if he hasn't exercised a lot. You should just try to keep you heartrate about 85% of 220-age. If you never exercised before, it should be more like 50% of 220-age so you don't get sick and throw up. Keep it your heartrate up for 30 mins. So probably the OP should jump at an easier pace but for a longer period of time.

I assume you know how to calc your heartrate- take your pulse from your wrist for 15 seconds and x4.

Since he is really overweight, he should really start slow to build up to it. after a few months of regular exercise, he should be a new person! :)

Well thank YOU for being open minded, acknowledging your flaws, and being willing to change for the better. Some posters in the past have viewed similar posts like my last few as hostile believe it or not

If you can't bother to get off your ass to work out now, then OCS is going to be a rude awakening. Try running 2-3 miles (especially when your DI makes you run at HIS pace and you're a slug like me) after 1.5-3 hours of sleep for the past 3 weeks. Oh, and BTW, you are sick and coughing up white stuff as well.

GET OVER IT. If you can't man up in the comfort of your own home, then you won't survive when all the variables are CONTROLLED at OCS.

You're welcome. (But I'm not a guy ;) )
