I didn't go to the Naval Academy, nor did any of the 20 or so other SNA's and SNFO's that are slated to report to OCS the same day as me.
That is because no one from the NA will be going to OCS.

Yeah, you graduate as an officer in the academies and then wait to go to flight indoc and the rest of flight training. OCS is for college grads, enlisted people who want a commission, and BDCP-future grads. ...As far as I know. I have no idea about NFOs chances.

Dimlight, other people on this thread were mocking those stats from the movie about the "percentage" that become fighter pilots (I think it came out to 1 out of 3 million). They are exagerated, and the movie was supposed to take place in 1990 (I believe, since they were flying Tomcats and they mentioned 1990 in the beggining).

Duh. ;)

I think i've met that guy before - he's an NFO. [/quote]

He must be a Maritime NFO, because he certainly isn't a TACAIR NFO. :D

Thanks...I watched it. It was pretty cool. I thought it was interesting how difficult they said it was to be a fighter pilot. It almost sounded as though fighter pilots only came out of the academy. I'm not sure because they didn't touch on it much but is it equally as hard for NFO's to get placed in jets? I didn't go to the Naval Academy, nor did any of the 20 or so other SNA's and SNFO's that are slated to report to OCS the same day as me.

If they went to the Naval Academy, they wouldn't be going to OCS, and yes it is easier for an SNFO to end up in jets. Why you ask? I'm glad you did: Since there aren't any NFOs in helos, and the Navy is mostly (what, 65% now?) helo, your chances are better as an SNFO to get into a jet. Just hope you like the back seat...;)

You can check out the web site for the movie at:

It is definitely NOT like AFP.

Agreed. I have both. AFP is good if you have a giant plasma or LCD since it was made for IMAX, but Speed and Angels is just downright an awesome movie in telling perspective and showing some great flight scenes. Now I just have to wait for the bluray version of SAA.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't AFP different from "Fighter Pilot"? AFP (or, "American Fighter Pilot") was the Tony/Ridley Scott Air Force 'reality' series made for TV, and Fighter Pilot was the IMAX cheese-fest. Well...both were cheese-fests...but y'know what I mean.

Anyway, AFP gives me a headache. Not just the "WE ARE WARRIORS!" part, but the footage and editing too...

bears, beets, battlestar galactica.
Right...I know that no one from the academy goes to OCS I was just stating that the movie only talked of stats of those that went to the academy and made no mention of those going through OCS.

When the Saints skipper is explaining how elite him and his homies are, he mentions that the numbers going to flight school include ROTC and other commissioning sources. I don't know that his math is right about the odds of making it all the way from Plebe summer to finishing the Tomcat RAG...but what the hell, I barely passed Probs & Stats for Rocks, too.

Yeah, he gives something like 1/100 odds for admission to the academy, 1/10 for getting a pilot slot, and like 1/100 for jets. And then something like 1/3 odds for finishing flight school. Not sure if these are all the right numbers, but they were up there.

I can't speak for admission to the academy, but those other numbers are waaaaaaaay off.

Just remember.

50,000 WILL APPLY. ONLY 1200 ARE ACCEPTED. MOST OF YOU... WILL NOT MAKE IT. ONLY THE STRONG SURVIVE!

Sorry had to.

But no, definitely not all Pilots, NFO's, Officers, etc. come from the Naval Academy.
