Do the P3 guys expect to make a better percentage of Department Heads in the future? I’m sure it’s fun in the squadron as a JO but that has to suck to know that you may get forced out or not promote.

The latest screen group had better numbers, and unofficial rumor mill (at least that I have heard), is saying that things are getting better. I do know that (as with other communities), if you are screening for DH, friends of mine were contacted and had to answer if they were going to accept DH orders if selected. So, that might skew the #s somewhat. I just wish as a community we would have a better look at what the current manning is, my bubbas list is pretty old... oh well...

Outside of RIMPAC or a major exercise, don't think I have seen that many on the ramp (okay, maybe the JMSDF at Atsugi, or the RAG when I showed up at VP30). I do have one pic, of the ramp in Kadena, with a whole bunch of AIP birds on the line, one of those "we need help, send planes out now, and no, we don't want those ****ty UIIIs"... :)

But, the 1 plane on the ramp in Kbay, not including alphie, JAN-MAR 04, it svcked, I didn't fly for a month or so during that period. (remeber that period Zab?) It was just depressing, the squadron was trying to figure out what to do with everyone, maintainers and all... A rash of GMT ensued on a wide variety of topics, groan....

Granted, we just came back from deployment, so we weren't the priority squadron to get what plane(s) were available. The 6 pilot DFWs in the kbay pattern, the revision to the wing stan notes, and that as a post PPC you only needed 3 touch and gos.. sheez.. From what I hear, those bleak days are way in the past.

We have two or three at the RAG that are... update nots. UIII sounds fancy.

Jesvs dude, you're missing the big picture, how many of those people will (a) get winged and then (b) move on to XX number of squadrons.

whoa zab, just being sarcastic.. Until that post I wasn't aware it was just 25 people and I realize that won't make much of a difference. I thought the little smiley would show the sarcasm, my mistake!

Expound upon this if you would Brett. I am very interested to hear from someone with a patrol background that went to a tactical jet.

Edit. Spelling
The role for FOs in TACAIR is just different than in VP. In TACAIR, the FOs are truly aviators and play a huge part in flying the jet - that aspect of it appeals to me. When I'm sitting in ECMO 1 seat, I'm in charge of that jet, I'm talking on the radios, and the mission is mine to execute. P-3 FOs are largely divorced from the aviating and focus more on their systems and coordination with the other crewmembers. This isn't intended to devolve into a community bashing session, but I just like the way that a TACAIR squadron works and the general mindset/attitude of the people there. Having 24 officers (or less in VFA) in a readyroom is, IMO, a tighter more personable experience that even the P-3 crew concept does not measure up to.

There's no right or wrong on this issue, so I hope folks don't take offense, but I've never regretted not returning to VP. Oh, and BTW, Prowler DH screen rate was > 90%.

@ Spot: I was a flying Ordie

Combating TIP training AGAIN?!
Thanks Brett,
While on the subject of prowlers, how long will the RAG be churning out EA-6B pilots, and when phased out, will they be able to transistion to "Shockers"?

129 will be "churning" them out until a year or two before the Prowlers go away (sometime in the 2015 timeframe). During the transition, they'll be running a dual RAG with VFA-122. Shocker aircrew (pilots and ECMOs) will learn how to fly the G model at Lemoore (basic NATOPS & A/A tactics), then go up to Whidbey for the EW tactics phase at 129.

BTW, FMRAM, you don't have a hair on your prior enlisted @ss if you don't come back to the Prowler community.

Is the EA-18 VAQ community going to need more pilots than VAQ currently does? I have heard that there are more airframes, but never confirmed it.

On balance, no. Prowler squadrons are manned for 7 pilots now and that may increase by one or two in a G squadron, but once the G model is online, expeditionary Prowler squadrons (3) will go away, so having 5-6 jets per squadron wont really result in more community pilots.

To put your seemingly endless efforts to weasel out of the LAMPS community in perspective :D , two of the three LAMPS converts during my time up in Whidbey were involved in class As. Concidence? ;) :D

Actually, that callsign has nothing to do with being caught doing something in the LSO shack.

However, my first det had the following:

"WOODY"
"Dirty Joe" (Just DJP on name tag)
"Taulli WHACKER" (Pronounced TALLY)
"JACK Meeuf" (Think MeOff)
"MASTER Bates"

And then my second det had "WAVEOFF" for being caught in the LSO shack.

Most of of our nametags just had the CAPS to keep them somewhat clean.

It's funny how times change.

My first deployment - someone caught using the cruise sock was ragged on by everyone.

My last deployment - some caught using a cruise sock, the guy doing the catching is ragged on for looking....
