Combating TIP training AGAIN?!
We've given them fair warning and they are supposed to be developing their own EA assets. As the transition plan stands right now, expeditionary goes away when Shocker is up and running.

Brett

Ouch...I was kind of hoping for an expeditionary JO tour...I suppose it could still happen.

@Heyjoe......I can always count on you for solid beltway gouge that is broken down so that I can pretty well understand it. Thanks.

Brett, why was the EF-111 able to do all of that stuff with just 1 extra guy and not 3? Did they have a better cockpit setup or something?

That's a good question, here are some thoughts. Backseat of a Prowler can be effectively run with one competent operator, a jet (in general) can be run by one competent pilot. Add things that the EF didn't have like HARM, radar, comm jammers, satellite downlink = more people to do a superior EA job. We had a USAF EF guy in our squadron and he never talked about the EF being better, or anything of the sort. I can't speak as to what role the EFs played in the strike group, but I know that the Prowlers are usually at the tip of the spear, calling the initial shots of the A/G war, usually without the comfort of a dedicated escort.

Okay, I'm just a P-3 puke and don't speak LSO. I get the OK but the rest is jiberish....

That would read "Fast start to in-the-middle, All Fvcked Up in-the middle, Too much power in-close to at-the ramp............OK, which is the best possible pass (which you'd never get with those comments, but it was a joke about "whatever" the guy was doing to/with the female SWO in the LSO shack)

FAW=Fast all-the-way. Self expanatory with the same joke.

A4s,

We have LSOs. I am a designated LSO on the USS Vicksburg, USS Anzio, and USS Klakring. Plus, I have a command letter that is usable for short duration cruises, as long as it is OK with the ship CO.

Yes, helo LSO is a different animal the fixed wing, I will admit.

Master,

I've jokingly argued this point before, but in the end, we're not the "LSO" that the pointy-nosed guys speak of. We're Landing Safety Officers, not Landing Signal Officers. We have an important job, but so does everyone else.

Your qual is good for only specific ships? The ships CO has the say-so on who's running the show? I don't know how your end works, so sorry if this sounds stupid. Just curious.

Our qual is from the MAG or MEU CO and is constant no matter what ship you're on. I rarely, if ever, talk to the ships CO about anything. I deal with the Boss.

is it me or is this thread not talking about P-3's anymore...

Welcome to a Threadjack brought to you by......

This one was "jacked" awhile back and then "jacked" again....it will likely morph into a Chuck Norris thread any post now

The jet guys get threated if we talk about life in the Navy other then Top Gun and carrier landing. Assume all threads will move back to one of those two topics.

Now /where/ is my sunscreen?

It was not politics, it was a JCS level decision (as part of Joint Warfighting Capability Assessment (JWCA) process) in early nineties that was looking at redundacy of roles/missions vis a vis platforms. They looked at EF-111 vs EA-6B...

My understanding has still been that the USAF was losing interest in the "beeps and squeaks" realm and instead focusing on stealth... the lesson learned from an F-117 being shot down by an Vietnam era SA-3 caused them to rethink that philosophy.

And now "they" don't go anywhere without "us." :D

I don't have the bandwidth to split the thread right now, so if someone else wants to send it on its way, be my guest.

@Harrier Dude:

It's a dual qual. First, it's a Natops qual, so it lives in your NATOPS jacket and is signed by your CO. There are a few differences between east and west coast wings (the radio callsign "Paddles" vs "Deck", for example), but there's an allowance to bounce and fly w/ guys from different wings. All it takes is an email (or 20). When you get on the ship, for some reason, the CO of the ship likes to designate you for his ship. You can bounce birds on a ship w/out the letter (like doing DLQs for workups/training), but for deployment, there's supposed to be a second letter. I don't remember why this is, but it is, and I moved on. Your LSO qual is for all ships, so even if I qual'ed on a FFG, I can go land/straighten birds on a CG.

They were worried about EA support from the start. We hardly got to use our Prowlers in Desert Storm because of continual "draft" to support 117 ops even though we were in the Red Sea. What's that tell you about EF-111 vs EA-6B?
